SERVES THE PURPOSE . . .

I'll give this book 5 stars simply because it's the only Ecuador guide I've found that can be easily carried into the field. I love the Ridgely/Greenfield for reference, but I like to have something I can refer to while out and about. Range maps, while small (necessarily so), are conveniently located with the illustration, and a brief description of habitat is included. While not as detailed as the Ridgely work, it fills an important need for an easily carried guide to the birds of this marvelous country.
The author, Lelis Navarrette, is an important figure in Ecuadorian bird conservation, and the illustrator, Miles McMullan, is an accomplished bird illustrator.

Complete, compact, and highly useful

BASICS: softcover; this compact book illustrates all 1,800+ species known to occur in Ecuador and the Galapagos; 204 plates show 8-11 species per page; male and female plumages are shown as are some juveniles but, not many subspecies or races; very brief identification notes are typed next to each bird plus very brief habitat descriptions; a small range map of Ecuador uses three colors for common, uncommon, and migrant
REVIEW: This book is truly a field-guide-sized work that can easily be toted about within a pocket. This will be welcome news to anyone who's lugged about the large (but excellent) guide by Ridgely and Greenfield (Birds of Ecuador: Field Guide).
This smaller book illustrates all 1,800+ species documented from Ecuador, including the Galapagos Islands. A total of 204 color plates show between 8-11 species per plate. Despite the smaller size of this book, each of the plumages for male vs. female or breeding vs. non-breeding are shown when there are notable differences. Even though the book's smaller format may limit the number of illustrations, the tubenoses, gulls, terns, hawks, swifts, and swallows and still shown in flight, which is how they are often seen.
As with the illustrator's earlier field guide (Field Guide to the Birds of Colombia), the artistry is unique in its style. The paintings are just a little rough, showing swaths of coloring instead of fine detail. However, this style definitely works and is sufficient for identification, perhaps even for the more frustrating of family groups such as the flycatchers or woodcreepers. The tapaculos will still cause problems, which is always true. You might recognize many of these illustrations from two other recent publications published the year before. These were smaller pamphlets " Birds of Northwest Ecuador" and " Birds and Common Mammals of Ecuadorian Amazon". Each is well worth owning if your trip is restricted to either of these areas.
The focus of this book is its illustrations. Very little text is provided for identifying the birds. This means identifying what you observe in the field will be heavily reliant on the plates. Some birds completely lack descriptions; however, most have a least a few words to draw your attention to key identification points. As an example, the White-fronted Tyrannulet is addressed with these few words: "broad white lore", "no spotting [on wing]", and "pale lower mandible". There is a small amount of verbiage supplied for describing the bird's preferred habitat, which is more extensive than the identification material.
My only complaint about the plates revolves around just one specific plate. This plate shows all 14 of the Galapagos finches. This makes for a very crowded page with small illustrations. Each bird is shown with the male and female plumages plus an enlargement of the head and beak. This latter inclusion is great since it shows the size and shape differences that are so crucial for proper identification. Considering the uniqueness of this group of endemic birds and the need to provide additional illustrations, it would have been far better to use at least two plates. It would have not enlarged the book and would have made the examination - and identification - of these birds a little bit easier.
To help quickly assess a bird's status in the country, a 2-lettered code is placed next to the bird's name. This status meets one of five categories used to describe the bird's level of concern in the country. Also, each of Ecuador's endemic birds are clearly marked as such in red font.
A range map of Ecuador is supplied alongside each bird. The ranges are depicted by three colors: Green (resident, common), orange (resident, uncommon to rare), and blue (migrant). A couple nice touches of detail to these small maps is the inclusion of the major rivers and a line on either side of the Andes that traces the 1,200m elevation. Lastly, in small print next to the map, is written the elevation range in which the bird is typically found.
To date, only the English version is available; however, a Spanish version was in the planning.
If you plan on birding Ecuador, this book will be invaluable to you with its portable size, its completeness of species, and its good artistry. The only real drawback is the limited amount of identification material. But, when compared to the common practice of tearing out and carrying only the plates from the Ridgely guide, these two books are on par with each other. -- (written by Jack at Avian Review with sample pages, May 2014)

The "Fieldbook of the Birds of Ecuador" (by Miles McMullan) is fantastic, and really the only practical field guide for actually birding in Ecuador. I was so excited when it arrived; however, before I describe why I like it so much, I need to first describe the other book I bought first (before I knew the McMullan guide existed). Actually, the reason I didn't know about it may be because of it's odd name. It's called a "Fieldbook", which is obviously some kind of a translation error. If the authors/publisher happen to see this review, you may want to change the name in the next edition ... all books of this kind are called "Field Guides". I wouldn't be surprised if this is hurting sales because it did not show up in my initial search for field guides of Ecuador. The cover also makes it looks like some kind of notebook for taking field notes or something (which of course it is not).
Anyhow, I wish I had seen this book before I ordered the giant (and much less useful for birding) "The Birds of Ecuador" by Robert S. Ridgely. I thought the Ridgely book was the only option so I bought it, and then paid an extra $15 at Kinkos to have it carved up into 3 spiral bound books (to enable taking into the field). I made one book that has the plates, covers and index and the other two that have extra detailed information which is too much (too detailed and not accessible in the field). The plates are also just OK with Ridgely, and don't include range maps, which are so helpful when trying to figure out what birds to expect. I tip my hat to Ridgely for creating an amazing book describing Ecuador birds (in a scientific manner), however, the book is not set up for birders trying to identify birds while slogging through mud under the canap�. In our case, we are planning a trip to Napa Wildlife Center (in the amazon ... Yasun�) and then Mindo area (Bellavista Cloud Forest Reserve).
OK, why do I like this so-called fieldbook by McMullan and Mavarrets? First, it has nice, clear drawings of all of the birds showing field marks, just as you'd expect, and second, it shows great mini map of Ecuador next to each bird showing the birds' range. This part sounds kind of trivial, but it saved me an enormous amount of time (e.g., 40 hours). Please let me explain. With Ridgely, I had to go online to figure out what birds have been seen around Napo and which birds around Mindo (and it what frequency). I would than have to go through Ridgely and highlight the birds in the plates that I'd expect see (with different color markers). That way I did not have to learn all 1000+ bird pictures in the little time I had to study, but instead could focus only (this time) on the birds I'm likely to see. That's where McMullan comes in ... it highlights in green (common) or orange (rare) for example in the Northeast (Napa) or Northwest (Mindo) of the country, so that way I can just study the birds I will possibly see. In fact, the long list of trip reports matched perfectly with the color scheme, so no additional work if required by me, other than to start reviewing the field guide (or fieldbook). :)
In summary, McMullan's book is perfect for advanced study and then for the amazon/jungle/cloud forest given the book's convenient size. The size of the book (8'' x 5'') is more convenient than the 9'' x 6'' Ridgely, however, it does make the font a bit small (perhaps requiring reading glasses for some). Overall, I was so impressed by McMullan's book; it's just perfect.
Actually, one watch out is that the book takes at least a week (perhaps up to 3 weeks) to ship by UPS. It would be nice if there was an option for faster delivery, but there was none in check out. If you are planning a trip to Ecuador, you will want to order this straight away.
