He was founder-director of the Laboratory for Experimental Epistemology and the Biology of Cognition at the University of Chile in Santiago. A new way forward

This is an important and exhilarating book by two authors from quite different backgrounds - the one a therapist, the other one of the foremost biologists of the last half a century. Together with Francisco Varela, Humberto Maturana formulated the theory of autopoiesis - the self-production and self organising that characterises living. This has been massively influential in a range of disciplines - biology itself, cognitive science, artificial life, the law, social sciences, therapy, management science, philosophy. What the discovery of autopoiesis signalled for Maturana in addition to its fundamental biological implications at the molecular level, was the critical role of reflexivity in our making sense of the world we inhabit and the living we constitute through our recurrent coordinations of actions with other reflexive beings.

The book - which has a wonderfully informative and concise introduction by Pille Bunnell - celebrates the collaboration of Maturana with Gerda Verden Zoller in identifying the critical role of prolongued intimacy in the evolutionary emergence of humanness, and indeed for the arising of language. There is a convincing case that it was the emotional predisposition for living together in long-term relationships of mutuality that led to languaging as an intrinsic feature of human evolution. Alongside this is a strong and compelling claim that it is such mutual affection (expressing the fundamamental emotion, love) that distinguishes us from our immediate evolutionary predecessors (chimps). The latter, in spite of their genetic proximity to human kind may be characterised in their social living as devious and manipulative rather than loving.

Of course, we see in present-day humankind an unfortunate mix of the legacy of our chimp ancestry competing with the uniquely human. What this book does is provide a powerful affirmation of an optimistic insight into our future, with important lessons for our co-existence with each other, different cultures and the environment. It unfolds a narrative of how it is the quality of our recurrent interactions with each other as autonomous but responsible beings that lays down both the ethics of our present and the direction of our future.

Probably the most accessible of Maturana's work due largely to the exceptional editorial work of Bunnel

I highly recommend this book as an introduction to a once very novel view of ourselves and the world, which has over the years become a more mainstream conception underpinning and guiding research and explorations within a far more diverse set of academic disciplines than those in which it was originally spawned. This work could well serve as the best portal into Maturana's earlier as well as subsequent work and overall vision. It is actually a succinct, highly reduced distillation of many highly complex ideas that have been rigorously developed by the authors and others over a number of decades.

great book, few forgivable biases

A great book that helps us see our human nature and future development under a different light. It helps us recognize we are first and foremost loving beings.

In complete coherence with his approach and theory, he lets a few biases permeate throughout the book. Notably our decay as species has a main component of male and western culture. I cannot agree but I lovingly take his view and choose to build a world which is lovingly human and transforms the controlling patterns which HM believe to be in the male and western natural drift.

Last I have already read some books and articles regarding the retreat of testosterone... This might in un sync with his postulates. Maybe it will help us re think if it is a male thing or a collective choice...

Excellent Essays by a Hollywood Beauty

Louise Brooks led one of the most fascinating, self-destructive lives of any actor of the silent film era. A born dancer, and giving professional appearances in Kansas at a very young age, she joined a famous ballet group and became a top dancer before she was kicked out for a "bad attitude". Then on to Broadway rising in the ranks to be a starlette of the great revues of that time, including Ziegfield. Talked into taking a screen test in New York, she immediately was cast and, once again, shot upward like a rocket. NY movie making was quite different than the Hollywood "machine" and once forced to CA, she again rebelled at the reins thrown around her. Off to Germany to make the two greatest silents ever: Diary of a Lost Girl and Pandora's Box with director GW Pabst. Bored with Germany, she fled back to the USA, only to find herself blacklisted. She made a few non descript movies after that and only one with sound. The studios, she claimed, let out a story that her voice wasn't "good" for talkies. What a lie! Her voice is angelic as is shown by her only speaking movie made with none other than a fledgling John Wayne, fresh out of USC.
After virtually vanishing for years, she was found in a terrible NYC apartment and convinced to move to Rochester, NY, home of the George Eastman House which was the inception of the largest film library in the world. Through devoted fans and despite her aggressive and often callous behavious, she began writing about her career and Hollywood, German film making and actors she knew. The result is a stunning tour-de-force and not to be missed by a "Lulu" fan. She led a wild, sexually charged life and was an alcoholic in her teens, yet she read philosophy, history, and classic literature. She was so intellectual that men were frightened of her. The rich wanted arm-candy. She was all of that, but because she had brains.
Be aware, however, that highly researched biographies of Louise prove that many of her assertions of "fact" and incorrect. Either she didn't remember well or purposely chose to bend the truth a little. Still, a beautifully, lovingly written set of words. The photos alone are worth the price of the book. With her hugely copied "helmet" hairstyle and those dark, penetrating eyes and perfectly symetrical face, her beauty was unrivaled. Personally I think, in her teens to early thirties, she was the most beautiful woman I have ever seen.

Quintessential Lulu (Louise Brooks)

What made Louise Brooks interesting beyond just the typical celebrity she was unusually intelligent. She was an extraordinary beautiful woman but if that were all - she would have been just another face in the Hollywood crowd albeit a striking one. Her life was not so much one of just ups and downs but most generally straight down starting at the top. Lucky to have so much success early in life but maybe unlucky for her vision as to witness the folly of those who gave it. Louise's insights and critical assessment of her life and those around her were a " blessing and curse" but then again she had no choice but to follow her own mind as it played out to the end. She was certainly not one to parlay her attributes as a cunning femme fatale as it were but she existed as a passing player through a masquerade of "bread and circuses" orchestrated by those with lesser sensibilities. No, Lulu could have never been satisfied with the status quo, the mundane of the hoi polloi, the trappings of the superficial she was an individual who saw life in its raw form and played no game and for those who did not understand Louise - missed - that her only glory was the truth and its price to pay. She was an intriguing and talented woman who deserved more but would not sell her soul to gain it. Her book tells of her life and times and the pathos within it.
I will recommend highly Barry Paris' biography of Louise Brooks as a necessary read for anyone interested in reading about the life and times of Louise Brooks. The book is excellent and engrossing. It gives a most informative detail of all aspects of Lulu's life. Actually Paris' book should be read first to gain a comprehensive overview of Brook's life before reading "Lulu in Hollywood." A better biography you could not read.

An invaluable resource...

This is one of the best books on the subject, due not only to the author's immense and wide-ranging scholarship but also to her clear and accessible writing. Many books on the goddess focus only narrowly, usually on Greek and/or Roman goddesses, but Whence the Goddesses shows the breadth and depth of human awareness of the feminine divine. I was especially grateful for the many translations of literature addressed to or describing the goddess. A lovely and useful work.

PREFACE

This book is intended for a one- or two-term introductory course in discrete mathematics, based on my experience in teaching this course over a 20-year period. Formal mathematics prerequisites are minimal; calculus is not required. There are no computer science prerequisites. The book includes examples, exercises, figures, tables, sections on problem-solving, section reviews, notes, chapter reviews, self-tests, and computer exercises to help the reader master introductory discrete mathematics. In addition, an Instructor's Guide and World Wide Web site are available.

The main changes in this edition (discussed in more detail later) are an expanded discussion of logic and proofs, the addition of two sections on discrete probability, a new appendix that reviews basic algebra, many new examples and exercises, section reviews, and computer exercises. OVERVIEW

In the early 1980s there were almost no books appropriate for an introductory course in discrete mathematics. At the same time, there was a need for a course that extended students' mathematical maturity and ability to deal with abstraction and also included useful topics such as combinatorics, algorithms, and graphs. The original edition of this book (1984) addressed this need. Subsequently, discrete mathematics courses were endorsed by many groups for several different audiences, including mathematics and computer science majors. A panel of the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) endorsed a year-long course in discrete mathematics. The Educational Activities Board of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) recommended a freshman discrete mathematics course. The Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) and IEEE accreditation guidelines mandated a discrete mathematics course. This edition, like its predecessors, includes topics such as algorithms, combinatorics, sets, functions, and mathematical induction endorsed by these groups. It also addresses understanding and doing proofs and, generally, expanding mathematical maturity. ABOUT THIS BOOK

This book includes

Logic (including quantifiers), proofs, proofs by resolution, and mathematical induction (Chapter 1). Sets, sequences, strings, sum and product notations, number systems, relations, and functions, including motivating examples such as an application of partial orders to task scheduling (Section 2.4), relational databases (Section 2.7), and an introduction to hash functions and pseudorandom number generators (Section 2.8). A thorough discussion of algorithms, recursive algorithms, and the analysis of algorithms (Chapter 3). In addition, an algorithmic approach is taken throughout this book. The algorithms are written in a flexible form of pseudocode. (The book does not assume any computer science prerequisites; the description of the pseudocode used is self-contained.) Among the algorithms presented are the Euclidean algorithm for finding the greatest common divisor (Section 3.3), tiling (Section 3.4), the RSA public-key encryption algorithm (Section 3.7), generating combinations and permutations (Section 4.3), merge sort (Section 5.3), Dijkstra's shortest-path algorithm (Section 6.4), backtracking algorithms (Section 7.3), breadth-first and depth-first search (Section 7.3), tree traversals (Section 7.6), evaluating a game tree (Section 7.9), finding a maximal flow in a network (Section 8.2), finding a closest pair of points (Section 11.1), and computing the convex hull (Section 11.3). A full discussion of the "big oh," omega, and theta notations for the growth of functions (Section 3.5)., Having all of these notations available makes it possible to make precise statements about the growth of functions and the complexity of algorithms. Combinations, permutations, discrete probability, and the Pigeonhole Principle (Chapter 4). Recurrence relations and their use in the analysis of algorithms (Chapter 5). Graphs, including coverage of graph models of parallel computers, the knight's tour, Hamiltonian cycles, graph isomorphisms, and planar graphs (Chapter 6). Theorem 6.4.3 gives a simple, short, elegant goof of the correctness of Dijkstra's algorithm. Trees, including binary trees, tree traversals, minimal spanning trees, decision trees, the minimum time for sorting, and tree isomorphisms (Chapter 7). Networks, the maximal flow algorithm, and matching (Chapter 8). A treatment of Boolean algebras that emphasizes the relation of Boolean algebras to combinatorial circuits (Chapter 9). An approach to automata emphasizing modeling and applications (Chapter 10). The SR flip-flop circuit is discussed in Example 10.1.11. Fractals, including the von Koch snowflake, are described by special kinds of grammars (Example 10.3.19). An introduction to computational geometry (Chapter 11). An appendix on matrices, and another that reviews basic algebra. A strong emphasis on the interplay among the various topics. As examples, mathematical induction is closely tied to recursive algorithms (Section 3.4); the Fibonacci sequence is used in the analysis of the Euclidean algorithm (Section 3.6); many exercises throughout the book require mathematical induction; we show how to characterize the components of a graph by defining an equivalence relation on the set of vertices (see the discussion following Example 6.2.13); and we count the number of n-vertex binary trees (Theorem 7.8.12). A strong emphasis on reading and doing proofs. Most proofs of theorems are illustrated with annotated figures. Ends of proofs are marked with a square symbol. Separate sections (Problem-Solving Corners) show students how to attack and solve problems and how to do proofs. Numerous worked examples throughout the book. (There are over 500 worked examples.) A large number of applications, especially applications to computer science. Over 3500 exercises, with answers to about one-third of them in the back of the book. (Exercises with numbers in color have an answer in the back of the book.) Figures and tables to illustrate concepts, to show how algorithms work, to elucidate proofs, and to motivate the material. Several figures illustrate proofs of theorems. The captions of these figures provide additional explanation and insight into the proofs. Section reviews. Notes sections with suggestions for further reading. Chapter reviews. Chapter self-tests. Computer exercises. A reference section containing 150 references. Front and back endpapers that summarize the mathematical and algorithm notation used in the book. CHANGES FROM THE FOURTH EDITION The first chapter on logic and proofs is considerably enhanced. Several new motivating examples have been added. A logic game, which offers an alternative way to determine whether a quantified propositional function is true or false, is discussed in Example 1.3.17. Section 1.4 now includes rules of inference for both propositions and quantified statements. The number of exercises in this chapter has been increased from 232 to 391. Arrow diagrams have been added to give a pictorial view of the definition of a function, one-to-one functions, onto functions, inverse functions, and the composition of functions (see Section 2.8). Graphs of functions have been added to give yet another view of functions (see Section 2.8). Two optional sections (Sections 4.4 and 4.5) have been added on discrete probability. We discuss the fundamental terminology (e.g., experiment, event), the use of counting techniques to compute probabilities, basic formulas, mutually exclusive events, conditional probability, independent events, and Bayes' Theorem and its use in pattern recognition. The setting for the Problem-Solving Corner in Chapter 5 has been changed to a more inviting and contemporary setting: sorting in a spreadsheet. The fourth edition's Section 8.5 on Petri nets has been moved to the Web site that accompanies this book. Appendix B, which reviews basic algebra, has been added. The topics treated are rules for combining and simplifying expressions, fractions, exponents, factoring, quadratic equations, inequalities, and logarithms. A number of computer examples now show actual computer screens to help connect the theory to practical applications. This book is as worthless as it is expensive

I taught a discrete math course in a major US university based on this book. Having been adopted by most US universities over the years, there was no choice.
There is no clear line of exposition in this book. Knowing what it should be about, it is repulsive to see how unstructured the content is, and how truly beautiful mathematics is made ugly beyond recognition. There exist far more insightful and shorter proofs than many of those given here.
Instead of developing a choice of key topics cleanly, transparently, and in detail, a large collection of loosely related facts are glued together in a supremely uninspired way. Some topics which are far too advanced for this level of exposition are mentioned over several pages, without any rigorous treatment, of course, while many important topics are left away that could have been included.
The elegance quotient of this book is zero. Students should learn how to present a proof. They should learn to pin down the key ideas, and to write a proof in the clearest and most transparent language as possible. Whoever takes this text as her/his stylistic guide will do her/himself great harm.
I am a research mathematician. It is my job to know precisely what good mathematics looks like, and also to know when something smells really bad. Believe me, this one smells beyond rotten.
There are beautiful treatises on the same material on the internet, and one may also look at a small book for roughly 10 $ by Balakrishnan, from Dover publishers (available on Amazon, "Introductory discr math"). It doesn't contain as much material, but is so much more worth the money. A diligently made choice of topics is presented in clear, concise words that are to the point.
There is also the book by Laszlo Lovasz, a master of the field. The clarity, inspiration and transparence of the exposition is absolutely exemplary. The paperback version costs around 35$ on Amazon.
If you read those texts, you will understand what Johnsonbaugh is trying to put into clumsy words, illiterate proofs, boring examples, and silly pictures.
What really hurts me is to see students, some of whom are not rich, paying 100 $ for this convoluted mess.
My main message to every student using Mr. Johnsonbaugh's oeuvre is: If you don't understand this mess, it may be because you have mathematical talent. Go and look for a better, cheaper text. Save your time, it's not worth trying to figure out what the author intends to say.

Why must so many universities foist this abomination upon their CS students as a required text? Is there really nothing better available, or does Johnsonbaugh possess incriminating photos of every school's Dean of ENGR in the country?
This is, without a doubt, the WORST textbook I have EVER encountered -- in any subject. It might qualify as the worst textbook OF ALL TIME. Yes, it's really that horrible. It's verbose. It's dull. Many of the examples are longer than necessary (and more than occasionally, misleading). Like many texts on this topic, it features Solutions to Selected Exercises in the back, but what's the point in displaying the final answer to an involved problem if you don't demonstrate how you arrived at it? If you're going to print an answer, PLEASE provide us with the COMPLETE answer.
I have searched (largely in vain) for another text or two to use as study aids. If you're thinking about Schaum's, hang onto your money (Note to Schaum's: Why publish a separate book of "Solved Problems" if you're merely recycling the same examples from the Outlines book?). Susanna S. Epp's textbook is much better in most places -- most notably the section on graphs.
Bottom line: if your school adopts Johnsonbaugh as the required text for your course, hang onto your money and rely on your lecture notes. This book is a waste of trees.

This book epitomizes the common flaw in higher education today-expecting that an "expert in a field" makes them an "expert teacher". Bull. This book is written by someone who has decided to write a book 6 levels above the education of their readers just so they can prove a point at how smart they are. I'll bet Johnsonbaugh is the kind of guy that just stands at the board writing his notes that he could just give to you, just so he can hear the glory of his own voice. I have taken 4 semesters of calculus as an undergrad, as well as various science graduate courses and am LOST when reading this book. This book may be good for math "majors," but for people looking in other fields (Computer science, for example) it is terrible.

School administrators, take note: Find another book for your students. Just because this guy is an expert, doesn't mean he can come close to making everyone else one. Spend time studying the impact of this book, and you will see that this book is as effective in educating as a ruler to the knuckles.

Johnsonbaugh should stay where he belongs-in the lab, solving the world's math problems and leave teaching up to the teachers.

Starred Review. Tatsumi's brief, disturbing stories, originally published in 1969, have a tone somewhere between contemporary short fiction and EC Comics' old "shock" comics. Each hinges on some kind of prurient or sexually twisted situation: a man's bedridden lover turns out to be a physically mutated sex slave; an office worker puts on his girlfriend's makeup and clothes and has an affair with another woman; a man who disinfects telephones for a living calls a prostitute, but can't think of anything to do but pull out his disinfection kit. Produced over a short period of time, the stories are variations on a theme of social maladjustment. Tatsumi draws marvelously evocative settings, and his stories flow with dreamlike ambiguity, speeding toward the inevitable tragedies at their ends, but his characters appear practically identical. This reinforces both the repetitive nature of his themes and Tatsumi's view of the common man's continuing struggle in a merciless world of menial jobs, impotence and abortions. Tatsumi is known as the "grandfather of Japanese alternative comics," and this is the first in a proposed series of authorized English-language collections of his work. His work anticipates American alternative comics, making it clear why American cartoonist Adrian Tomine, who edited this collection, was attracted to the work. (Sept.)

*Starred Review* Tatsumi has drawn groundbreaking comics in Japan since the 1950s, but Americans have had few opportunities to view his work. As the first in a proposed Tatsumi series edited by admiring alternative comics artist Adrian Tomaine, this volume of stories from 1969 starts to make amends. Tatsumi works in a powerfully straightforward manner that eschews manga's quirks in favor of naturalism. Combining the Japanese words for drama and art, he called his style gekiga to set it apart from the more commercially pitched anga. The latter shows much about Japanese culture, but gekigareveals the nation's psyche as Tatsumi depicts men living lives of quiet frustration--powerless, often sexually impotent, confined by social propriety. In one story, a factory worker mangles himself to collect an insurance payment so his girlfriend can buy a nightclub. Another portrays an auto mechanic fixated on a glamorous TV star. Others feature a sewer cleaner, a porn-film projectionist, and a "push man" who crams commuters into packed subway cars. What a wonderful surprise!

I have no idea what pulled me to this book when I first heard about it, but I am glad it did. I have not, as many others have not, heard of Tatsumi and that is a shame. It is good to know, however, there is a plan to release more volumes of work (please hurry). Sixteen stories comprise the first volume and all are powerful. Angst ridden? You don't know the meaning of angst until you read this book. There is very little hope in this with tales of unrequited love, murder, abortion, prostitution and transvestism, peeping toms and suicide. The central character is always a man in some state of despair. The tales, though, some quite wordless, and the drawings, beautifully rendered, pull the reader quickly from one to the next. Despite being a potential downer (and some may cursorily say misogynistic), the stories are actually darkly comic and well told. I paid full price for this book because I didn't want to wait for it - I'm very happy I did. Buy this book!

"I myself am a very normal person"

"I myself am a very normal person. Please do not interpret these stories as representative of the author's personality." This plea to the reader appears on the very last page of this book, and upon coming across it, most readers will probably think the disclaimer belongs at the front of the book. Because by the end of these 16 short graphic stories, which represent a "best of" anthology of Tatsumi's work from 1969 (the plan is to continue releasing a "best of" for each year), it's very hard not to suspect the author of having some major dysfunctions with both society at large, and especially with women. According to the introduction by Adrian Tomine, Tatsumi is considered "the grandfather of Japanese alternative comics", and coined the term "gekiga" to distinguish naturalistic, more adult comics from the popular "manga" fare for kids. The material in this collection certainly falls into the "gekiga" category, as it encompasses very adult material. Not "adult" in the sexual sense (although there is sexual explicit material), but in the more metaphysical sense that is brought on by feelings of urban alienation

The stories are set in late '60s Japan, in what is presumably Tokyo, and Tatsumi writes that he found inspiration in newspaper human interest stories and the police blotter. If that's the case, it seems he was drawn to tragic stories about men who just couldn't cope with their lot. In every story, the protagonist is a kind-faced everyman figure (visually, he is the same in almost every story), who works some kind of menial job either on his own or with men who don't respect him. He either lives alone or at home with a wife or girlfriend who either works as a bar hostess or openly cheats on him. Stripped of his manhood on all fronts, he either lashes out in violence, takes cold-blooded revenge, or commits suicide. Indeed, it's impossible not to notice the misogyny that pervades the stories -- literally every woman is either wanton, scheming, drunk, greedy, or somehow tainted. The urban setting, dominant theme of alienation, outbursts of violence and disgust, and sexual disgust are perhaps best compared to the film "Taxi Driver" in terms of tone, and yet are ones that seem to crop up over and over in modern Japanese fiction and film.

in contrast to the gritty subject matter, the artwork tends to be very clean and crisp, and as with everything published by Drawn & Quarterly, the book is beautifully produced. The panels haven't simply been "flopped" from the original Japanese layout, but have been rearranged for Western formatting, and the results are spectacular. Fans of Adrian Tomine's work will appreciate both the visual style, and the use of silence throughout the stories. However, this is a book that should be read not only by comics aficionados, but by anyone interested in the literature of modern Japan. It will be interesting to see if Tatsumi's stories change tone and theme over time, and I look forward to the 1970 volume.

Great storytelling and glimpses of the Japanese society

[[VIDEOID:36118851]]Before I read the book, I had no idea who Yoshihiro Tatsumi is. He has been called "the grandfather of Japanese alternative comics" and he certainly deserves it.

The Push Man and Other Stories is a collection of short stories previously published in Japanese, now translated and reformatted for the western audience by Adrain Tomine.

In each story, Yoshihiro Tatsumi looks at a different facet of Japanese society. The main character is always a man filled with restrained angst, going about their daily jobs, ending with a solemn note. Every tale is filled with some form of sexuality -- sex, abortion, prostitution, etc.

In the story "The Push Man", we're introduced to the pusher, whose job is to get commuters into packed trains by pushing them in. One day, he helped a lady whose clothes were torn from the pushing. They spent the night together and she invited him to her place the next day. The story ends with her sisters pushing each other away to get him. In "Telescope", a disabled guy committed suicide after being paid to watch someone else have sex. In "Test Tube", a sperm donor can't stop thinking about his recipient and eventually forced himself onto her. You can see that there are no happy endings here.

The storytelling is masterly. Every story is told in a darkly comic style, short dialogues and cleanly laid out panels. Even without text, the stories will be easy to understand. Yoshihiro Tatsumi has a way of dissecting his characters, providing a very raw look at their hard and unforgiving life.

The 16 stories are short. I like short if it means leaving the reader wanting more* at the end.

It's highly recommended but certainly not for everyone.

About the Author
The Authors: Eberhard Oesterle is managing partner of the neginerring office DS-Plan. He works as an engineering consultant specializing in the energy optimization of buildings. He is the author of numerous publications and holds an honorary professorship at the University of Stuttgart.

Rolf-Dieter Lieb is an engineering consultant specializing ub aerophysics and building physics as well as in energy management at DS-Plan.

Martin Lutz is an architect and managing partner at DS-Plan. He has designed several new facade developments.

Winfried Heusler is director for aluminum technology at the Schco concern. He has been responsible for many fundamental developmetns and has written widely on the subject.

Professionals only

This is a somewhat technical book for construction professionals. Not for idly paging through, despite its attractive, even stylish, execution (although my copy's hard cover was printed upside down). Only commercial architecture, only buildings in Germany.

Very interesting

Very interesting book! Explores many of the biggest crimes and a few that I wasn't even aware of. There are also little fun facts like movies and movie characters that were inspired by various criminals

The book contains lots of photos and information on the world's most disturbed minds. If you're a fan of the macabre, this book is for you. It's about the size of your high school Social Studies book and it's paper back.
