About the Author
Michael Dewe has extensive experience at senior level in public libraries and latterly as a University Lecturer in the Department of Information Studies at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth, Wales. As well as a long-standing commitment to writing and lecturing about library buildings, he has also acted as a consultant both in the UK and abroad. Actively involved with the IFLA Section on Library Buildings and Equipment for a number of years, he was also a member of the judging panel for the Public Library Building Awards scheme from 1995 to 2003. Currently he is a team member of the library buildings database project, Designing Libraries (www.designing libraries.org.uk) and has written a booklet on primary school library design.

Review of "Zero Visibility" by Georgia Beers

The really wonderful thing about Lesbian Fiction is that it has really become pretty diverse in terms of genre.Yes, I think we still have a ways to go, but there are more options to choose from today than there were in, say, 2000. Heck, in the last 10 years alone, the Golden Crown Literary Society has gone from giving out awards in 3 categories to giving out awards in 13 categories. (And I have no doubt that we'll be adding categories in future years.) Like a good mystery/thriller? Not a problem. Enjoy sinking your teeth into a good vampire story? Yep, lots of those, too. How about ghost stories? Sweet, because there are some really good ones out there.

Seriously. If there's a genre you like, you'll probably be able to find it in Lesbian Fiction.

While I do love all of the choices (and I read from many, many different genres), when all is said and done, I still cannot resist a solid romance. You know...that girl-meets-girl story with its great characters and relationship obstacles, all culminating in a great "Happily Ever After" ending. If the universe commanded that I only be allowed to read romance novels for the rest of my life, I'd be okay with that. It's probably the perpetual single girl in me that enjoys reading about others finding their Happily Ever After. I like living vicariously through these fictional characters that, in some ways, are very much like me...and yet, not like me at all. In short, romance novels make me happy.

Zero Visibility (Brisk Press) is Georgia Beers' newest offering. It's a romance. Because that's what Beers does - she writes romances. She does so proudly. Thank goodness for readers, she does it well.

I always enjoy the characters that Beers creates in her novels. Beers offers us characters who make mistakes; they're characters who have issues. They're not perfect. They're fallible. I can relate to them. Emerson Rosberg and Cassie Prescott are two such characters. Both women are dealing with mistakes they've made in the past and they each have their own ways of dealing with those mistakes. For Cassie, it's a bit easier. Lake Henry is her home. She has her family and friends to help her through and be her support. Emerson doesn't have that safety net. No siblings. Her mother has just died. Her father is not there for her. She really doesn't have friends to speak of. She just has herself. Until Cassie enters her life. And that causes a whole new set of issues that Emerson doesn't feel equipped to handle. It's a wonderful balance and Beers does a nice job of laying things out and really delving into minds of these two characters. Beers gives them depth. She brings a realism to Emerson and Cassie that had me relating with each woman on different levels. It's very satisfying.

The supporting characters in Zero Visibility are more than just filler. Each one serves a particular purpose throughout the novel. Periodically, Beers showed us the perspective of some of these supporting characters. I'll admit that I was thrown by this the first time it happened. It took me out of the story for a minute. ("Whoa! Why did we just switch to that perspective?") But I settled down and kept reading. Half-way through the section, I wasn't wondering anymore. And the next time it happened, I wasn't pulled out of the story at all. It made sense and just added more layers to Emerson's and Cassie's characters. I love Beers' knack for giving each a very distinctive voice. With each new perspective, there were very subtle changes in language use and sentence structure. Whether this was Beers' plan or not, I don't know, but I sure thought it was effective.

Beers doesn't skimp on the details. She takes the time to really paint the picture for her readers. Never been to the Adirondacks? No worries. Beers has you covered. From the description of The Lakeshore Inn to the layout of Cassie's sporting good store to the walkways and trails of Lake Henry, Beers provided the details and visual cues I needed to picture everything clearly. Sometimes I actually felt like I was breathing the crisp mountain air. Her descriptions of characters are clear and, in some cases, recall iconic figures. You'll love her description of Arnold Cross.

One of the things I've always enjoyed about Beers' romances is the slow build. Even though I can "see" what the characters can't as their relationship forms, I don't have an urge to yell, "Oh, c'mon already!" Yes, I can see things happening. Yes, I want them to see what I see. But I don't want to rush it. Part of the joy is watching Emerson and Cassie figure it out. It's great when the supporting characters see what I see and start nudging Emerson and Cassie in different directions. It's like I'm sharing a secret with them. And, yet, I still don't want things to move too quickly. I still want the slow build. Sexual tension? Yes, please. Internal struggles over the way their feelings are changing? Most definitely. Hop into bed at the earliest opportunity. Put on the brakes, Buster! I've come to care too much about the characters to have them rush things for a tumble in the sheets. I want the Happily Ever After to be believable. I want it to be for good. Beers' talent for assuring a solid HEA is off the charts.

If you're looking for an edge-of-your-seat mystery, or a nail-biting adventure, or vampires and demons, I've got some suggestions for you that will not include Zero Visibility. Because if that's what you want, you won't get it from this novel. But if you're looking for a solid romance with great characters and a complex, fulfilling love story, then Zero Visibility should definitely be on your list.

Georgia Beers at her very best.

Having read all Georgia Beers’ novels I always get excited when a new release is imminent. You know without doubt you are going to meet well-developed characters and enjoy their growing friendship, affection and eventually love.

Cassie Prescott has always lived in Lake Henry. Set in the Adirondacks, the mountains of upstate New York, Cassie enjoys the changing of the seasons and couldn’t picture living anywhere more beautiful. Her friends and family surround her every day and she feels loved and part of the community.

Emerson Rosberg is returning to Lake Henry for her mother’s funeral. After a tragic skiing accident as a teenager Emerson ran as far away from Lake Henry and her family as she could get. L.A has been her home ever since. The last time she had visited her mother was 5 years ago and Emerson has had to deal with that guilty knowledge from the moment she had received news about her mother’s death.

Cassie and Emerson strike up an unexpected friendship, each having regrets and recovering from bad choices. The more time they spend together, the more each one begins to influence the other. The reader can’t help but be drawn to the characters. Each with their own weaknesses, fragility and foibles.

Ms Beers paints a picture with a beautiful backdrop, where the spectacular colours of Fall dance along the pages and the crisp clear air surrounds you. Add to that two women who’s character development is so magnificent that you can picture yourself having them both as a friends and you have a masterpiece in romance.

Some authors have a gift of writing strong, powerful and stunning characters that stay with us long after the final page is read, Ms Beers is one of those authors.

Great Romance

I loved Georgia Beers new novel Zero Visibility! I great story with lovable characters. Emerson was an olympic hopeful skier until a tragic accident ruined her chances for the gold. She leaves the small town she grew up in and everybody behind thinking herself a failure until her mother passes away and she forced to return. She meets Cassie when she returns and what follows is really a testament to the human spirit and a journey of soulmates. I highly recommend this romance for a light fun read that will leave you smiling.

A Jewel of a Book, With Many Facets

This brilliant historical novel tells a fascinating story, in beautiful language, with much wisdom. The novel is formed as an autobiography of the Emperor Hadrian, who ruled Rome from 117CE to 138; he was one of the "Five Good Emperors" who helped bring Roman civilization to its highest point. Hadrian was complicated. Politically, he was a good emperor from a Roman point of view, but other nations (like the Jews) saw him very differently. Personally, he was disciplined and intelligent, but fell passionately in love with a young boy, and could be cruel. The book, framed as a letter to Marcus Aurelius, who succeeded him twenty years after his death, takes Hadrian from his boyhood in Spain to his deathbed in Italy at 62.

The novel is beautifully written, in prose that captures the cadences of classical Roman writing. It is studded with perceptions and insights, as such a memoir would have been; I found myself underlining points as if it were an original text. The story is compelling -- how does it feel to be ruler of the world, and then to lose that which you hold most dear -- and the characters are fully developed. The novel took many years to write, and was based on exhaustive research -- Ms. Yourcenar, in an afterward, discusses what was known and what she made up, but it hangs together as a work of art. A great book, and a great pleasure to read.

A Memoir From the Man Who Rules the World

This book from Margaret Yourcenar, and translated into English by her and her lover Grace Frick, purports to be the memoirs of the Roman emperor Hadrian. He writes in the form of a letter reminiscing to his adopted grandson and future successor, Marcus Aurelius. Hadrian knows he is on the precipice of death, suffering from a form of cardiac hydropsy, and desires to recount his life.

Over the next three hundred pages, Hadrian describes his origins in a sleepy Spanish town. His grandfather divines that he will one day be ruler of the world and shortly thereafter he is the first of those closely connected to Hadrian to die, found dead on his farm and torn by birds of prey. Hadrian is eventually called by his distant uncle Trajan, the current emperor, to serve as a military commander in Dacia. The relationship between the two men is strained, but Hadrian performs well and retains his position. Trajan's ambition, however, leads him to folly and he decides to invade the Parthian Empire. Isolated in Mesopotamia, Trajan's health breaks down and eventually he dies, leaving Hadrian as his successor under suspicious circumstances.

Hadrian immediately withdraws from the newly won territories and makes peace with his foreign enemies, while also purging a few rivals from within the empire. Over the course of the next few decades, Hadrian brings about a level of peace and financial prosperity the empire had never previously encountered. Content to recognize men possess certain differences in attitude that cannot be changed, Hadrian allows a wide variety of opinions and faiths to flourish throughout the empire. Towards the end of his reign, this period of happiness ends. His beloved, a young man named Antinous, drowns himself in the Nile in an esoteric attempt to prolong the emperor's life. The Jews of Jerusalem and surrounding areas also rise up in revolt, and Hadrian is forced to brutally crush their rebellion. By the end, the children of Israel are exiled and their holy city is a pile of ruins.

Hadrian's health begins to break down and, after a brief flirtation with suicide, he decides to meet death with open eyes and an appreciation of what beauty the world can fleetingly offer. On the whole, the Memoirs of Hadrian is a fantastic novel that offers philosophy in a refreshing way. Rarely, if ever, have people had a leader with the intellectual repose the author gifts Hadrian with, but one would hope they at least realize once in power how puny their authority truly is. On a few occasions, the author diverges from the historical record (e.g. the permanent mystery of the circumstances of Antinous' death), but the appendix at the end of novel listing the author's resources shows she clearly did her research. Time passes quickly while reading this book, just as Hadrian would say for other aspects of our lives.

If you enjoy classical history

I don't even know where to begin when describing this book. If you enjoy classical history, and you are curious about Hadrian, it is unmatched. The book is written in a style that is analogous to those used by Roman philosophers and historians of the period. It, therefore, seems like you are reading a real first person account of Hadrian's life. It is also an extremely interesting meditation on what it means to be human. I terrific book; one that I will read again.

Convention Classic!

This book is one of the classics retelling the story of the Constitutional Convention of 1787. It was chosen as the model for the Bi-Centenial celebration of 1987 and distributed to high schools across the nation. It is now out of print, but easily gotten in used book form - and worth the effort.

It is a very thorough review of both the 55 men (39 of whom signed) and the complex issues that formed the Constitution during the hot Philadelphia summer of 1787. The author's prose is very easily followed making the read both informative and pleasurable. This is a great read to understand how the Constitution was made and to start your search for its meanings, or for the lives of its makers via hundreds of related books if that is your interest. Highly recommended and worth all five-stars.

Also see Clinton Rossiter's 1966 publication 1787: The Grand Convention for a similar, though more scholarly treatment of the subject, or David O. Stewart's The Summer of 1787: The Men Who Invented the Constitution (The Simon & Schuster America Collection) for a more recent (2008) review.

Yummy!

A range of recipes that are simply explained and very, very tasty. A number of the recipes include secondary dishes or accompaniments, such as the saut�ed potatoes mentioned as an aside with the chicken fricassee, which on their own, would still make this book worth reading.
This little book provides a great introduction to French Classic cooking that is easily achieved in a normal kitchen, and provides techniques that can be easily applied. All the recipes I have tried so far have been enjoyable to cook and even nicer to eat.
Warning, make sure your glasses are clean (and strong) before you start. I originally got the Kindle version but wanted the printed version as well as I thought it would be easier to read while cooking, but the publishers have resorted to some very small fonts and some quite poor colour choices in the printed version to fit all the information on a single page.

Omissions / differences in recipes

There seem to be some omissions / differences between Raymond Blanc's recipes available online and the ones in this book (perhaps the editor didn't check very thoroughly!) Take for example, the Maman Blanc Apple Tart. The versions online, including his video, includes a custard that's poured on during the last ten minutes of baking. The one in the book does not even include a custard. I wonder what else is missing!

very insightful

"First the Seed" is a wonderfully documented account of the history of agriculture since the "discovery" of America. I found this book when I was doing research on threats to genetic diversity in Mexico under NAFTA and the book gave me an insightful lens to understand the problems that are occuring from the mechenization of agriculture and the patenting of genetic material.
Anyone who is studying food production systems must have this book in their library.

Absolutely worth buying and reading, even if you already own the first edition

The second edition of First the Seed, published in 2005, is worth buying even if you already have the first edition, which was published in 1987, because in the second edition Kloppenburg provides an extremely informative overview of developments in seed biotechnology between 1988 and 2004. (I've requested him to write a third edition, with an overview of developments between 2004 and 2015.)

It's difficult to review First the Seed because there is so much information in the book. It is the product of decades of research and passionate personal involvement in the struggles over intellectual property rights and over biotech research. In First the Seed, Kloppenburg offers the history and political economy of plant biotechnology, beginning from North American agriculture's roots in the early 1600s, when settlers began bringing crops to North America. In a nutshell, First the Seed is the story of how capitalists have used science and laws to shape crop breeding and to restrict farmers' rights to re-plant seeds. Kloppenburg writes, "Western science made the seed a catalyst for the transformation of pre-capitalist agrarian social formations and their integration into the web of commodity relations that characterizes the contemporary world economy." But in the book he actually shows that it has been Western business interests, more than Western science, that have used the seed for this end. First the Seed is required reading for all students of Rural Sociology and Agroecology.

I should warn customers that the Kindle edition contains frequent errors that appear to have been created when the book was converted to electronic format. For example, every instance of "tl" appears as a "d" (e.g., constantly became constandy, outlined became oudined). This is very unfortunate. I hope Amazon will come out with a corrected Kindle edition.
