Excellent and Timely Guide for Leaders

In an age where conversations have become a commodity, a good book on the relationship between organizational performance and language is a must-read; and The Three Laws of Performance doesn't disappoint.

I was interested to see how the authors would handle the issue of generative language, language that's used to create rather than just describe. I was pleasantly surprised. Not only did the authors do a great job of navigating the delicate balance between the extremes (no appreciation for the power of future-based language on the one hand and a complete disregard for real world limitations on the other); they provided a clear road map along with engaging cases studies that help to guide the reader along a path that I believe will help leaders for years to come take their organizations to new levels of effectiveness and performance.

Ironically, the only thing I would suggest changing about this book is the language. The 3 main laws could have been stated in a way that was easier for the reader to remember. Twice now, I've tried to describe the 3 laws to a friend and I wasn't able to articulate the laws effortlessly. I had to work at remembering the precise language. For those in the same boat, here's the shorter version that I'm now using when I give a quick description of the book to friends.

1) Performance is related to perception
2) Perception is rooted in language
3) Vision casting changes perception (Or, Generative language changes perception)

Rather than perception, the authors speak of the way things occur to the members of an organization, which works great in the book, but not as great in an elevator. I imagine that they strayed from the term perception in order to steer clear of the obvious clich�s related to the term. For example, "Perception is 9/10th of reality" can be used to mean too many things.

With that said, I don't want to diminish the power of this book. I found that it was one of the few books that took me a couple of nights to read because I didn't want to miss anything. It may also be one of the few books I actually read again.

The overall structure of the book worked well for me: a section describing the 3 laws, a section on leadership and the 3 laws, and then, finally, a section on personal application. The first section includes 3 chapters which introduce the 3 laws by taking the reader through a mesmerizing weave of case studies that help to put real world handles on the ideas proposed by the Three Laws.

The second section focuses on the application of these 3 laws in the context of leadership. I loved the 3 corollaries to the 3 laws written for leaders and found the concept of listening for the future of your organization to be compelling in light of the supporting case studies.

The second chapter in this middle section describes the Self-lead organization. This is a loaded term that is defined in the chapter, but in essence the authors are providing guidance to leaders on how to guide organizational conversations so that the whole organization moves in unity toward what Jim Collins described in Good to Great as the organization's hedgehog principle. I loved this chapter.

Finally, the book ends with 3 chapters in a section that focuses on a personal application of the Three Laws. Don't skip these chapters! I can only imagine what it would cost to attend a Three Laws workshop with the authors, and I felt as though they provided all the instructions needed to replicate that experience as closely as possible.

As the authors note in the final chapters, reading The Three Laws is just the first step. The real goal is mastery; and in the new age of hyper-connected, social-media-powered conversations, the future shoguns (this term will make more sense when you read the book) of organizations of all sizes will be those leaders who have not only mastered the Three Laws, but are able to train others in the same art.

A Perfect Book At the Perfect Time

The Three Laws of Performance could not come at a better time. Unless you have been living underground cut off from communication with the outside world, you must know that the world is facing unprecedented challenges. From the economy to the environment to global terrorism, the future doesn't look pretty. In fact it looks down right depressing.

While the authors of the book may not have intended it, the ideas in this book could very well be the answer to the question "How do we get ourselves out of this mess?" The US President has recruited some of the best minds in America to his administration to fix the US banking system, jump start the economy and stop climate change. We all may be praying that they are successful, but in each of our hearts we know that we are going to need to each embrace the required change if it is to be successful.

The personal and political habits that got us where we are now will not allow us to get where we need to go. We don't need change, we need re-invention.

So what about this book?

I, like many people want to do something about the issues that we are facing. A friend of mine gave me a copy of the book to read saying that I would like it especially because of the community work that I do. I was doubtful. I found the title to be boring and I am generally not interested in business books. She said that I would like it because I have to deal with a lot of resignation, which is true. Being an environmental advocate can feel like talking to stones.

I began reading it and got immediately intrigued by the First Law of Performance:

"How people perform correlates to the way the world occurs to them"

I would have never said it that way, but it made perfect sense to me. People don't recycle because it occurs for them like it doesn't matter. People will drive out of their way to save 10 cents on a gallon of gas or to use a 2 for 1 coupon but they won't recycle. How we act in the face of climate change or the economy really does make a difference but as my friend says, we are resigned.

This is also true even in organizations where people get paid to do a job. The authors Steve Zaffron and Dave Logan contend that it is people's individual views and the language they use to describe their situations that determine the actions they take. According to the book, the way people both view and speak about situations is influenced almost exclusively by the past. This in turn limits people's ability to adapt and work cooperatively together as past successes and failures literally limit their view of what is possible. This is true for both individual people as well as the organizations they are a part of. Just think of the auto industry or a losing sports team.

In most organizations, individual people feel that they have little or no say in what happens. As a result there is little or no real communication between the leaders and those they lead. The Three Laws asserts and illustrates that it is possible not just pay lip service to the notion of giving people a say in the organization but open a kind of platform for communication that is profoundly human.

An example of this comes in a surprisingly moving passage from the book where two women, working at the Lonmin Platinum Mine in South Africa, one black and one white were able to speak openly about their personal experiences of apartheid with one another and thus heal wounds they had carried since their childhoods. On the surface this conversation had almost nothing to do with the operations of a mine. Presumably mines care about productivity, profitability and safety, yet the legacy of distrust from apartheid and the fact that no one was willing to talk about it openly affected all of those things. The book goes on to tell the story of how a new spirit of trust developed at Lonmin and surrounding community.

The book is loaded with similar examples from real organizations all of which are used to illustrate the basic assertions of the book. I was finding it almost hard to believe until I read the endorsement from Bishop Desmond Tutu:

"God invites each of us to participate in the process of transforming the world - to create a world in which every person knows their infinite and irreplaceable worth and can truly fulfill their potential. This book filled with insights, real-life encounters and experiences, shows us how we may do this work of transformation. Applicable in the corporate, labour, political and civil society sectors - Steve and David have written an inspiring, practical book that will assist all who seek to rewrite the future of our world."

I must admit that I am one who seeks to rewrite the future of our world. I don't think I am very different than most people. As I said this is the right book at the right time.

Inspirational

I was pleasantly surprised!
When I first flipped through this book - it looked pretty simplistic - especially for an Art Journaling book.
After all - most art journaling books are filled with colourful, creative examples - not this book.
So I was surprised when I started to read through the prompts - the further I got - the more inspired I got. I wanted to attack my supplies and get journaling right away.
My enthusiasm for art journaling was renewed once again!
The ideas and techniques described are fun and easy.
I am eager to try them out and see my completed pages.
It isn't a very extensive book (only 33 pages in total)... just enough to get started and inspired.

A good book with a few good ideas but it's really for a beginner.

Well, this sounded like a good idea when I read the descriptions on here. Yes, there are 100+ ideas in the book but most of them are the most basic and simple ideas for art journalling. I'm by no means an experienced art journaler but this book is a little too basic for me. I thought there would be more instruction on how to use some products but maybe I was too hopeful. For a new art journaler who doesn't have much creativity or someone who needs help with ideas, this would be a decent purchase.

Yay! Finally the book I've been looking for!

This is EXACTLY what I have been looking for to help me grasp how to begin art journaling personally and how I might incorporate the art with my professional work. I like the step-by-step approach, and how it goes from simple to more complex. I also love the prompts and ideas the author gives. It is a tiny book, but it is packed with just right information. I also appreciate that the author chose not to give examples in the book so the artwork created by readers can be unique and inspired rather than copied. I highly recommend this book for all who are interested in art journaling but are having a hard time figuring out where/how to start.

How to Win Friends and Incriminate People!

Like many an expat, Troy arrives in Hong Kong bright-eyed and bushy tailed, taken aback by the kaleidoscopic culture on offer - the hectic neon, exotic food, crazy night life, mad characters and challenging language. However, his lowly role as a humble English teacher takes a very different turn after he gets arrested for possession of a hefty amount of cocaine in a nightclub. Faced with a lengthy prison term in a cockroach-infested slammer - or could it be the death penalty? - our self-effacing protagonist has no choice but to pay for his freedom by working as a police informant. In the hilarious tale that follows,Troy juggles his work, personal and party life with cops, drug dealers and triads, attempting to outsmart the latter in an ever-complicated web of deceit.

Andy Carter is probably the humblest yet funniest and most observant author I have read. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would recommend it to everyone.

Fantastic book from a great new Author

About the Author
Dr. Leland Hartwell is President and Director of Seattle’s Fred Hutchinson CancerResearch Center and Professor of Genome Sciences at the University of Washington.Dr. Hartwell’s primary research contributions were in identifying genes that controlcell division in yeast, including those necessary for the division process as well asthose necessary for the fi delity of genome reproduction. Subsequently, many of thesesame genes have been found to control cell division in humans and oft en to be thesite of alteration in cancer cells.Dr. Hartwell is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and has receivedthe Albert Lasker Basic Medical Research Award, the Gairdner FoundationInternational Award, the Genetics Society Medal, and the 2001 Nobel Prize inPhysiology or Medicine.

Dr. Janice Fischer is a Professor at The University of Texas at Austin, where she is an award-winning teacher of genetics and Director of the Biology Instructional Office. She received her Ph.D. in biochemistry and molecular biology from Harvard University, and did postdoctoral research at The University of California at Berkeley and The Whitehead Institute at MIT. In her current research, Dr. Fischer uses Drosophila to examine the roles of ubiquitin and endocytosis in cell signaling during development.

Dr. Charles Aquadro (Chip) is Professor of Population Genetics, the Charles A. Alexander Professor of Biological Sciences, and Director of the Center for Comparative and Population Genomics at Cornell University. He obtained his Ph.D. in genetics from the University of Georgia, was a postdoc at the National Institute for Environmental Health Sciences/NIH, and joined the faculty at Cornell University in 1985 where he is now a professor. He has served as President of the Society of Molecular Biology and Evolution, is an elected Fellow of the AAAS, is a member of the Scientific Advisory Board for National Geographic Society’s Genographic Project, was a member of the Scientific Advisory Board for the WGBH/NOVA TV series “Evolution,” and has been a visiting scholar at Cambridge University (England, 1993) and Harvard University (2007). His research and teaching focuses on molecular population genetics, molecular evolution, and comparative genomics. While Drosophila is his primary research system, recent work has also involved yeast, humans, and plants. At Cornell, he teaches a university-wide course to nonmajors on personal genomics and medicine, and a major’s course in population genetics.

Dr. Michael Goldberg is a professor at Cornell University, where he teaches introductorygenetics and human genetics. He was an undergraduate at Yale Universityand received his Ph.D. in biochemistry from Stanford University. Dr. Goldberg performedpostdoctoral research at the Biozentrum of the University of Basel (Switzerland)and at Harvard University, and he received an NIH Fogarty Senior InternationalFellowship for study at Imperial College (England) and fellowships from theFondazione Cenci Bolognetti for sabbatical work at the University of Rome (Italy).His current research uses the tools of Drosophila genetics and the biochemical analysisof frog egg cell extracts to investigate the mechanisms that ensure proper cellcycle progression and chromosome segregation during mitosis and meiosis.

Dr. Hood received an MD from the Johns Hopkins Medical Schooland a PhD in Biochemistry from the California Institute of Technology. His research interests include immunology, development and the development of biological instrumentation (e.g. the protein sequenator and the automated fluorescent DNA sequencer). His research played a key role in unraveling the mysteries of anitbody diversity. Dr. Hood has taught molecular evolution, immunology, molecular biology and biochemistry. he is currently the Chairman (and founder) of the cross-disciplinary Department of Molecular Biotechnology at the University of Washington. Dr. Hood has received a variety of awards including the Albert Lasker Award for Medical Research (1987), Dickson Price (1987), Cefas Award for Biochemistry (1989), and the Distinguished Service Award from the national Association of Teachers (1998). He is deeply involved in K-12 science educatiohn. His hobbies include running, mountain climbing, and reading.

Clear, Smart, Incredibly Helpful

This book is an enormous improvement from the previous version--it is clearer, more concise, and so much more readable. Using this book has helped me grasp everything in my genetics class much faster and with more certainty than other genetics books I've had to work with (including the fourth edition of this same book) in other biology classes. The chapter questions are really useful and have helped me feel completely prepared and on top of the material this semester.

Great introductory text for genetics students. HUGE improvement from previous edition

Compared to the previous edition of Hartwell Genetics, this version is leaps and bounds of improvement. About 3 years ago I took a course using the old edition and felt like there was a rigid change in the material from Mendelian genetics to the molecular details of the field. Practical details about lab techniques often seemed like sidenotes rather than keys to the text. Also, chapters were disjoint as they jumped from historical perspective to modern techniques. In this new edition, I can see how much the readability of the text has improved! The organized layout of chapters has a clear ebb and flow to it. Starting with a short overview of the field in chapter 1, this textbook lets students know the scope of the field of genetics before delving into the text. From evolutionary biology to clinical applications, this book is chock-full of examples that detail the practical benefits of the field. Each chapter is laid out in a clear format with great illustrations and examples. The practice questions are challenging (not impossible) and endow the student with a perspective about the greater context of the field. Each chapter prepares you for the end-of-chapter questions, but puts the general tenants of the chapter in a variety of contexts, promoting learning. This edition does a much better job of integrating the history of Darwinian, Mendelian, molecular, and population genetics ideas (i.e. Sewall Wright) with practical techniques like pedigree analysis, PCR, gel electrophoresis, and cloning. Overall, I would say this text is a great introductory genetics text that has vastly improved from the previous edition.

Looking for a text to prepare for lab work in genetics? Look no further.

With intuitive figures and clearly expressed ideas, this text provides an excellent conceptual and applied foundation in introductory genetics. The book problems steadily work the readers through underlying concepts before asking them to apply their newfound intuition to legitimate, real-world scenarios. They aren't all easy, but good problems shouldn't be. Any murky moments can be readily cleared up with the solutions manual, study guide, and/or the constantly updated online support. Examples provided in the text are relevant to modern times and thought-provoking.

If your professor is requiring this edition, make sure to get this one! There are 2 new chapters and a huge number of new/improved figures and problems!

Both brilliant and easy to grasp

This book has been of great significance in my coming to know God. I have given copies to probably 10 people, and the ones who have read it all say the same.
Tom Green is a gift to all communions of the Church, Catholic, Orthodox, and Protestant. *Weeds Among The Wheat* shows His deep knowledge and love of God and his profound compassion for God's people on Earth.
The best thing about this book is that it keeps the back-and-forth quality of the Christian life firmly in focus: we serve a God who is power, love, and light, but we are fallen men and women, living in a fallen world with few really black-and-white choices.
Green is writing about discernment, which is the art of hearing clearly what God is saying, and then following where He leads--hence the subtitle, "Where prayer and action meet."
The very idea of a real God, outside of us, speaking to us things we can understand and know come from Him, is ridiculed by many. Separating God's voice from all the others crowding our heads is difficult, but God wants us to know Him; with the help of the Holy Spirit, discernment is not at all impossible. *Darkness In The Marketplace* is a great place to begin learning how.

Excellent guide for discernment of the spirits

Started reading this book because of a series of seminars on spiritual discernment at an Ignatian centre. It's by far the most enlightening and useful book i've read on discernment.

Fr Green began by looking at three key concepts of God throughout history - disinterested watchmaker, manipulative puppeteer and loving Father of mature adults. Then, he explained six norms for distinguishing true prophets from false prophets in the Old Testament - often prophecies of something bad/unpopular (rather than something good so as to make the kings or the powers-that-be artificially happy), fulfilment through 'signs', obedience to God, deep faith consistent with earlier teachings in the bible, intention to convert people for the better (rather than to covert power or other material rewards), and an inaugural prophetic call.

Then a chapter followed on how Jesus discerned infallibly His identify and mission, as well as how his disciples discerned gropingly the person of Jesus and His mission, what the apostles Paul and John had taught about spiritual discernment in their letters to the faithful (e.g., Galatians 5:19-23 in the New Testament). Next, more details on the kind of disposition and 'climate' that a discerner needs to maintain to be truly open to the promptings of the Holy Spirit, and so on.

How i wish i've read this book much earlier! Then again, if i had read this earlier, it would not make that much sense, would it?

A Fine Book....Much Food for Thought

I first began to consider the "art" of discernment at a retreat last year and purchased the book to read shortly thereafter. As we week to discover or discern God's plan for us, WEEDS AMONG THE WHEAT provides an excellent discussion of the topic in clear, articulate language. Unlike many texts, this book is highly readable whether one has actual training in theology or is relatively new to spiritual exploration. As Christians and Catholics, we are called to do God's work, not just what we think is God's work. We are called to do God's work in our daily lives in the world at large, not just during solitary times of prayer or devotion.
Father Green provides a rich source of information in developing discernment in the context of a special lifelong journey. It is an excellent introduction to the Spiritual Exercises of Ignatius Loyola and to "the place where prayer and action meet."

Muscle Men and More

Very, very much into muscle worship, and if you're into that sort of thing (which I am) you will find Sean Reid Schott's descriptions very hot. I haven't read all the stories yet, but 'David in Austin' is very well done and very hot. 'David Conquers All' could have been the title and I find the concept very erotic. Recommended if you like stories of gay muscle men.

For readers who enjoy muscle-worship, this anthology will give you pleasurable reading. I especially enjoyed Camo Hat and David in Austin. The stories are primarily narratives, but they are very cleverly written -- enough to make me chuckle a number of times. Sean Reid Scott's fans should be aware of the forward which states that these were some of his earlier works that were published on the web. Well worth the few bucks!

Concise Guide to Dermaneedling

I found this to be an excellent book. I read two other related books plus medical journals before undertaking my personal microneedling experiment. My first treatment was in a doctor's office. While I was impressed with the results, it was so painful I decided never to undergo the process again (dermapen settings ranged from 1.0 mm to 2.5 mm with no anesthesia). In my experience, microneedling is more painful than lasering. I'm medically very conservative, but felt the principles behind microneedling made considerable sense. As such, I ventured to treat my own skin. While I was not as aggressive as the medical practitioner, my results were excellent. Before needling I arranged sterile equipment, sterile gloves, and hyaluronic acid to be applied as needed. I applied lidocaine 25 minutes before treatment. I did not use a setting beyond 1.75 mm since I felt it would be imprudent to treat more aggressively until I was able to examine the surgical outcome. No complications such as infections, rashes, or bruising were encountered, only mild swelling which subsided within 24 hours. The point of my narrative is to make it clear that because I read this book and the medical literature I was able to treat my skin with confidence. Because of direct pain feedback I was able to apply the precise pressure. Unlike the professional practitioner, my treatment did not leave lateral scratches upon my cheeks. It should be noted that I and the practitioner used all of the same equipment. As mentioned, my settings were less aggressive and I applied a numbing agent unlike the practitioner.

Younger looking with derma rolling

Excellent text book. Remember this is medical jargon so if you don't know medical terminology, you will be constantly looking up words. Dr. Setterfield proves the needling/derma rolling works; he does experiements; the needling by itself; skin care by itself; then in combination. He does cross sections of the skin to see results. The derma rolling plus skin products do work to correct sagging, lines, acne scarring, etc. I am so glad I bought this book.

This was a supplemental textbook for my sociology of criminology class. It is written in a very different style than most of my course materials, but once you get used to the narrative flow, it is a very easy, quick read grounded in social constructionist point of view.

A Barcelona-born novelist based in Los Angeles, Ruiz Zafon was a finalist for the Spanish Fernando Lara de Novela award with this fifth novel. This thriller follows the mysterious disappearance of an author of melodramas, Juli n Carax, and how his book influences the 10-year-old Daniel Sempere. When Daniel visits a mysterious and secret Library of Forgotten Books in 1940s Barcelona and finds Carax's novel The Shadow of the Wind, he becomes obsessed with Carax. For more than a decade, he follows the writer's ghost through a labyrinth of love, sex, violence, friendship, and betrayal. The narration unfolds through an interesting, yet overextended, interplay of overlapping characters and stories. Carax's and Ruiz Zafon's novels blend throughout the story, sometimes misleading the reader but ending in masterfully executed pages. Ruiz Zafon explores the world of antique books, the city of Barcelona, and the animosity inherited from the Spanish Civil War. Some scenes in this thriller also refer to Borges's exploration of libraries, the labyrinth structure, and Arturo P rez-Reverte's study of hypertextuality in works like El club Dumas (The Dumas Club, Suma de Letras, 2000). Although Riuz Zafon uses some complex metaphors to imitate Carax's melodramatic style, his language is mostly clear and accessible to all readers. El talento literario de Carlos Ruiz Zaf�n envuelve a los
protagonistas de La Sombra del Viento en un sinf�n de recovecos
progresivamente sorprendentes y misteriosos, estimulando la
continuidad de la lectura. Es una novela que combina genialmente
el poder insospechado de los libros, la motivaci�n imparable de
la juventud, la capacidad del amor para derribar barreras, la
fidelidad incondicional de la amistad y el triunfo del bien sobre
el mal, en una narrativa de misterio con ambiente hist�rico. Su
estructura recuerda obras cl�sicas decimon�nicas, sin dejar de
ser popular. Est� tan bien trabajada que se seguir� leyendo en
generaciones por venir. Las posibilidades de que el libro sea
llevado a la pantalla gigante son muy buenas. Le auguro �xito.

One of the best of 2002

Almost without promotion, this book has become one of the best sellers of the Spanish market in 2002. The reason behind it is its elegant and sensitive mixture of ingredients. Critics have compared the author, Carlos Ruiz Zaf�n, with Eduardo Mendoza and Arturo P�rez Reverte, and indeed do we have a literary mystery, not unlike the kind P�rez Reverte used to excel at, and we have the early XXth century Barcelona as a background (and a very gothic Barcelona, at that), but in all fairness the references trascend those mentioned. This is the story of youngster Daniel Sempere, entrusted with the care of a unique book ("The wind's shadow", exactly like the title of this novel). His research for information on the book's author will reveal as far more dangerous than he anticipated, and will teach him a thing or two about love and courage. This book has a magical quality to it, both in the collection of well rounded but altogether odd characters it portrays, in its description of the dark years after the civil war as in the strange tingling it leaves in your heart after reading it. A winner.

I'm not an avid reader, but this book it's been the best I have read so far, and I've read it twice already. Highly recommended, in spanish even better, you won't lose the language uniqueness!
