A Peace and Justice Student Review

I am an graduating senior, so my humble opinion should only count from the perspective of a peace and justice studies student.

I just wanted to say that this was one of the main books we used in my conflict transformation/peacebuilding course during my undergrad. My overall opinion is that it was a very strong and helpful textbook. I have never had a textbook in my life that once I read the first and second chapter, I couldn't stop reading it.

I must say I was dissapointed by their treatment of environmental ethics and conflict. There was little mention of nonathropocentrism and how that might change the field. Instead, they refer to the field in very anthropocentric terms, which is the status quo, but they failed to at least acknowledge it. Also, they lightly touch on the history of nonviolence in an early chapter, and then they shelf it for the rest of the book, which was unfortunate.

I find it helpful that they do a treatment of the field that recognizes and respect also other theories, as well as non-western, non-northern thinking at certain points. It does a good job at responding to critiques from outside the field. It also opens a way to see the the contemporary challenges field, and where future work will need to be done in order to advance the field. For example, they begin scratching the surface at points about cyberpeacemaking, and talking about the role of social media in regards to contemporary conflict resolution. However, it is still such a novel idea, that they provide a theoretical basic of what is happening but still recognize as a new frontier.

I am glad I got to read this book before graduating. I feel it has helped me frame the field better, and the knowledge I have gained from it will serve valuable to me as a prospective peacebuilder. I think this textbook should be a must.

Perfect renewal book for any couple, and not only

Challenging, convicting, and easy to relate to! I can say that it is one of the top few books I would recommend to couples, both newlyweds and those who have shared more years together. While it is best if both spouses read together, it can also be helpful if read individually. The advice also is helpful for other relationships. I was able to review this through a complementary e-edition through netgally. However, I would even consider getting a print edition myself for review and journaling.

It is a very good book that should be read together

My wish is that all couples new and old would read this book. It is so full of Biblical truth that so many couple need to hear. It is a very good book that should be read together, studied and prayed about as a team. This book opens your eyes to the 10 lies that couple believe about marriage.
I found it full of scripture that was wonderful to read and study and really think about and you are more connected after reading it.
You should grab a copy of this book today and transform your marriage.
I gave this book 5 stars and I HIGHLY recommend it. I want to encourage those who are having trouble in their marriage to give this book a try together and pray as you read it.

Confront the lies that make married life difficult

Dr. Chris Thurman utilized wisdom gained from his own marriage and from his professional marriage counseling career to create an insightful and informative book. The book is designed to help couples confront the lies that make married life difficult. Dr. Thurman clearly and concisely detailed ten falsehoods that couples tend to believe; he then provided examples and application points for moving forward (walking in truth).

The chapters appear to be drafted to allow couples to read and work through as stand-alones (of course, there is a natural flow to consecutive read). Many of the chapters include questions/assessments to help couples “put truth in action” by means of acknowledgement, assessment, adopting, acting, and asking. Although the book is firmly based on Christian principles; it is not overly “preachy” … nor is it unrealistic about expectations and possibility of change. Scripture reference and practical knowledge co-exist in equal measure.

I encourage those who are thinking about getting married, those newly married, as well as, those long-married to take a look at this refreshing work (as soon as it is released to public).

a awesome sequel

With this novel, Bueno is off and running. Picking up the pieces from the first novel in the series, and using the same inviting tone and brilliant storytelling he draws you in right from the get-go and doesn’t let go until the very end. He recaps just enough to jog the reader’s memory as to who’s who and who did what in the first novel, but doesn’t overdo it or bore his readers. By using the same great flow and easy to follow dialogue he ties the stories together quite nicely while taking off with a different part of this brilliant story. That said, this instalment is more intense than its predecessor, yet is still a mellow, light read that is very easy to immerse yourself in fully. This sequel is also a lot more brooding, but we really get to the heart of the story with that.

The characters in this novel continue to grow as individuals and as friends. They are each developed so individually that as a reader you get to see the minute differences in their reactions to a single event. It’s quite a trip. The new characters that Bueno introduces in this instalment are also quite well developed and add to the storyline as a whole. You’ll also note that the supporting cast from the first novel become much more fully developed as their roles in the story grow.

Overall, this was a brilliant sequel to the first singularity novel, drawing you deeper into this world of magic and secrecy. At the end, I was only left with a single question: with this twisted ending, how will it all work out in the end?

I received a complimentary copy of Broken Spell from the author. This did not effect my honest review!

I loved the first book in the Singularity series, Wicked Sense…so I was excited to have the opportunity to read this new installation. I was not disappointed! It was good to see the gang back, I had really enjoyed and become attached to these characters. In Broken Spell, Drake and Skye beat the odds in Wicked Sense to be with one another and so now the pair must continue to beat those same odds to stay together!

Of course with the two teens dealing with maturing and overwhelming feelings; throw in the mix the formidable mission of protecting and shielding the Singularity until she has reach her fullest potential with her powers–plus the increasingly alarming dealings with the Coven– and there is never a dull moment.

When tragedy strikes the group comes together to face the challenge, endearing the group once again to me as a reader:)

A slew of twist and turns! Action abounds, the story is fast paced, laced with humor and simply a great read!

I looked forward to the next in the Singularity series and have become an avid fan of Author Fabio Bueno!

I Highly recommend Broken Spell for those who enjoy the Paranormal and Supernatural!

I really loved this book. Great series.

I just loved this book. I really loved the first book Wicked Sense and was so happy to be able to read this 2nd one. I really wanted to know what was going on with Skye and Drake. I loved the guessing that took place for us. I still love how it swaps between Drake and Skye point of views, makes it really interesting.

I love this world of the witches the author created, and it takes place not too far from where I live, Seattle, which is cool.

I won’t add spoilers, as I know some may not have read book one yet. But want to say how great this series is. Try is, it’s worth it.

I give 5 out of 5 stars, highly recommended.

Actionable, entertaining, and easy to read

SEO Like I'm 5 is actionable, entertaining, and easy to read. SEO may seem like a very complex and difficult to understand topic, but Matthew does a great job of distilling it down in easy to understand language and format. Not only was it actionable and easy to understand, it is also quite entertaining and inspiring. In the year 2014 if you are not developing your online presence with content and search marketing, you may be completely missing the boat. The author is clearly an expert on the topic, so I highly recommend this book!

Capala should have read a book about how to publish a book.

OK - I'm a grumpy OLD guy. Haven't yet formed an opinion about the usefulness of the content, but a few early observations. Whoever printed the book chopped the last sentence or two off of many pages. Really? The illustrations (screen prints) are too small to be readable. Useless. There are constant, and I mean CONSTANT invitations to Tweet praise for some statement or the other. Hallelujah, brother! Very distracting.

I will write more once I finish reading and have a chance to try to put the content to use.

Finished it last night. This book seems to be directed to others of the same ilk as the author. If you are a self help author or aspiring writer, etc, there may well be useful content here. In other words, if you believe you can create on-going content that others will want to follow, there are hints and tools to use. If, on the other hand, your business is more static, or your clients are companies that are easily 1000 times your size(as mine are, hence unlikely to link to my site), there aint much here. I've gotta say, reading this book reminded me of watching a bunch of teenage girls hanging out together. They twitter and giggle and have their own vernacular and inside jokes and don't understand that there is a world outside of their own.

Again, I'm a old guy. Maybe I just don't get it.

If you need a way to understand the basic principles, techniques, and tools used to improve your SEO and Blog, this is the book for you. This is the "Clear and Easy to Understand Beginner's Guide" to getting yourself found on Social Media, Blogs, and search engines.
This is written in a way that is comes across like a friend explaining his complex job to me so that it is clear what he does.

This book is not for reading. If you have a plant in mind and want to get a start on what properties it has this is your book. Best book on earth for that, may not have the exact species you are looking for but it will have the genus and your species will likely have almost identical properties.

Paige Rawl was an ordinary girl.

Cheerleader, soccer player, honor roll student. One of the good kids at her middle school.

About the Author

Paige Rawl is an accomplished speaker and an inspirational figure for the tens of thousands of kids to whom she has spoken. Today, Paige is a national youth advocate, antibullying crusader, and powerful HIV/AIDS educator. Paige has been featured in multiple national media outlets, including USA Today, People magazine, Seventeen magazine, Nick News with Linda Ellerbee, the Huffington Post, and Poz magazine. Since Paige was eight years old, she has participated enthusiastically in pageants. Most recently, Paige was Miss Indiana Teen Essence 2011 and Miss Indiana High School America 2012. She is currently a student at Ball State University, where she plans to study molecular biology.

Ali Benjamin's work has appeared in print, online, and on television. She lives with her family in rural Massachusetts.

Should be required reading in middle school. Empowering to young people who want to make a difference.

Paige Rawl is an all-American girl- popular, an "A" student, a cheerleader, beauty-pageant winner and issomeone who had been born with HIV, stabilized by a good regime of medication. Life was good. Until she told her best friend, while trying to reassure her that every family had health issues. Hours later her middle school was engaged in a massive bullying orgy that continued unabated for years. When cheerleading on the top of a pyramid formation, shouts of "P-AIDS" her hated nickname, distracted her and caused a serious fall. Her principal and counselor refused to get involved with her "drama", her soccer coach who looked at her confidential files suggested using her disease to scare the other team. There were daily taunts in the hall, vicious notes on her locker and even her boyfriend was told to drop her incessantly.

There were no attempts to stop the bullying, to require good character on the part of her schoolmates or to educate them about HIV and its low possibility of transmission. It almost cost her her life, as bullying has done to so many.

She met others who were much worse off- a boy who had been injected with HIV-tainted blood by his father who didn't want to pay child support, a gay teen who was beat up by bullies and whose religious family couldn't accept him, girls who were slut-shamed after being raped. Inspired by the Ryan White story, she got angry and tried suing the school for not providing a safe environment. And she started speaking out nationally against bullying and is known for her work today.

This autobiography should be required reading for middle school students, touching on such themes as moral character, bullying, HIV-AIDS and making a difference in the world.

a heartbreaking tale of hate and healing and HIV and hope

Oh, how this book hurt and helped, with each page.

One of my children is HIV+. After we adopted this child, my husband and I lost our best friends. It stung. Our child has no idea what happened with these friends, because our child never got to know them, so this time we were able to shield our dear one from that hurt. I know that won't always be the case, though. So in some ways, I think that rejection was a good lesson for us to learn. I won't ever know what it's like to be judged or bullied for having HIV, but that experience was the closest thing to it. In losing those friends who wouldn't or couldn't understand that HIV was no risk to them or their children, we shared in the pain that people like our child and like Paige Rawl face.

Paige was just a kid with a chronic condition, having no idea that HIV carried any more stigma than her diagnosis of asthma. She was an A+ student, a cheerleader, an all around good kid. Then she shared her status with her best friend - her first best friend - and everything changed. That girl told everyone, and Paige was called PAIDS, mocked in the halls, and - in the most heartbreaking sections - let down by the very adults who should have protected her: her school counselor, administrators, and soccer coach, the last of whom joked that they could use Paige's status as an advantage on the soccer field because opposing teams would be scared of catching AIDS from her. I'm so thankful for Paige's mother, who never once doubted her and who understood in a deeper way that I will because Paige's mother is also HIV+. But even the love of a mother isn't enough sometimes, as the bullying got so bad that Paige was having seizures from the stress and cutting herself as a coping mechanism and dropping out of school to be homeschooled instead and then attempting suicide. Thank God that she didn't succeed in that attempt, because her adversity has shaped her into a powerful advocate for anti-bullying efforts and for HIV/AIDS awareness, but as a mama and former public school educator, I ache for what she had to go through.

To be honest, while this book ends in a "Positive" way, it broke my heart more than it lifted it up. But I think that's a good thing, because it inspires me to continue to educate others in hopes that my child will grow up in a more accepting world than Paige did. As she writes in the preface, "But I was beginning to realize that sometimes a person doesn't get to choose whether she joins or fights. Sometimes the joining is impossible, sometimes the fight chooses you. The universe plucks you - you, specifically - out of all those souls out there and hands you something that makes fitting in and going with the flow utterly out of the question." So it was for Paige. And so it is for me, as I stand with her as an ally and an advocate for my child and countless more.

Staying POSITIVE!

This book exceeded all of my expectations.
Every.
Single.
One.

I am so impressed and touched by this story.

Paige Rawl was born HIV positive. She has always taken medication at the same time other children eat breakfast, and gone to doctor's appointments when other children were playing sports. Paige never seemed to have a problem with this, because for most of her childhood, Paige did not know of her HIV status.

But times have changed for Paige. She was beginning middle school, meaning that a new reputation had to be created and upheld. This means that Paige would enter several beauty pageants, attend class lock-ins and dances, and make new friends. But one thing that Paige might not have expected, is the disastrous and painful aftermath of informing Yazmin - a friend she had known for the majority of her life - of her HIV status. She could have never imagined what would happen next.

POSITIVE is a story, but most importantly, it is Paige's story. POSITIVE is a story about illness, bullying and a lack of acceptance, but POSITIVE is also a story about new hope when Paige believed there was none, new and better experiences when Paige thought she couldn't survive anymore, and reversing stereotypes when Paige was invited to speak at several HIV-centered events. POSITIVE is the story about change, inspiration and hope. POSITIVE is just that, remaining positive when everything else seems to crumble. That is what Paige does best.

Paige Rawl has an exceptional writing style and a way with words. Her story clicks with me and resonates with me so much that I finished the entire memoir in one day. I never wanted to put this book down, and I never wanted the telling of her story to end. Paige uses the perfect amount of details and life events within her story that it feels like the reader was on the journey with her.

Perhaps this was because all of this drama unfolded in middle school, or just the sense that all of this drama unfolded at all, but I clicked with Paige instantly. I wanted to scream at her counselor when she was told just to stop the drama and deny her HIV status. I wanted to scream when Paige was told that no one believed that she was framed when Yazmin found that note on her locker. I also wanted to run and support her when Yazmin's sister threw a McDonald's drink at her.

I really loved this book, because it is not just a story. It was, is, and will be Paige'sstory. This is a book about life turning upside-down, broken relationships, and life throwing you under the bus. This book is not just about an HIV status. This book is about being POSITIVE.
