This introduction to the basic ideas of structural proof theory contains a thorough discussion and comparison of various types of first-order logic formalization. Examples are given of several areas of application, namely: the metamathematics of pure first-order logic, logic programming theory, category theory, modal logic, linear logic, first-order arithmetic and second-order logic. Useful but a bit mis-pitched

This is a very bread-and-butter introduction to proof theory. Apart from digressions, it is not until we are five-sixths of the way through the book that we begin to meet formal systems in which any actual mathematics can be formalized (chapter 10). The first nine chapters are devoted to studying, in great detail, a plethora of purely logical systems. Anyone who thought, under the influence of Hilbert, perhaps, that proof theory was about proving the consistency of classical mathematics will probably be seriously disappointed with this book.

This is the main flaw in the book. Computer scientists (of whom I am not one) might like it; but beginners looking for an explanation of the relevance of proof theory to either mathematics or philosophy will probably not find what they are looking for, at least through the first five-sixths of the book.

Why is proof theory interesting? I could be missing something, but I just do not see that the authors have anything much to say about this question - rather a serious fault in an introductory textbook, surely? The book is very clear and the style is pleasant; but a great many hairs are split and a beginner cannot be expected to see that there is anything much to be gained from doing so.

Despite these faults, for readers who *already* possess a moderately advanced knowledge of proof theory and want a really thorough, in-depth treatment of the very basics of the subject, this book is very useful. A thing I particularly liked is the emphasis given to considerations about the lengths of proofs (sections 5.1 and 6.7). Some textbooks on proof theory either do not treat pure logic at all (Pohlers) or do treat it but without giving any information about what cut-elimination in pure logic does to the length of a proof (Schuette). The latter strategy is perverse. Considerations about lengths of proofs are undeniably important when the proofs in question are infinitely long; yet students of the subject should be allowed to see that the considerations that apply here are just generalizations of the same considerations as they apply to finitely long proofs. You will understand the advanced stuff better if you know the basics as well.

People doing research in proof theory might also welcome the fact that the authors discuss quite a wide variety of logical systems, thus giving the reader a chance to weigh up the merits and disadvantages of each.

Anyone wanting a first introduction to proof theory will probably find the one by Pohlers a lot more exciting than this one. Of the older books, the one by Girard is the one that bears the closest resemblance to this book: in fact, this book covers much of the same ground as the earlier chapters of Girard's, but is easier to follow. On the other hand, because Girard goes much further into the subject, he allows you better to see the relevance of the basics to the more advanced material.

Wide-ranging and helpful

[2015 review] I bought this book a few years after it was published, with Gentzen's "Investigations into Logical Deduction" under my belt; I could not make head or tail of most of the book, and gave up for a long while. In the meantime, I learned some actual computer science. Oh, what a difference a DFA makes! Troelstra and Schwichtenberg did not think interesting proof theory stops at cut-elimination, or at Gentzen's elaborate "proof" of the consistency of arithmetic using transfinite induction (Tarski claimed this latter item advanced his understanding of the issue "not one epsilon"). Modernized versions of these results are here, but the authors go into as much detail about resolution or category-theoretical logic or the proof theory of the simply typed lambda calculus, with its famous isomorphism to intuitionistic logic. Results of particular interest to computer scientists like the unmanageable complexity of cut-elimination algorithms, noted by George Boolos in "Don't Eliminate Cut", are stressed.

Proof theory is just beautiful compared to model theory and recursion theory, but knowing which way is up is as important as spilling "abstract nonsense". Gentzen himself is an excellent example of powerful insight rendered accessible to many, and though this book is not easy it isn't "intractable". All of the material will be of nearly bread-and-butter importance to the intended audience for this series, computer scientists with an interest in theory; and some stuff (like the proof theory of the modal logic S4 and the "translations" of seemingly incompatible logics one into another) is just fun. This is also recommended for training philosophers who are somewhat uneasy about the discipline's current focus on "supersized" philosophical logic which permits all too ready an application; knowing logic 'cuz you're "rigorous" means knowing about Herbrand's theorem and the reasons behind the popular semantic-tableaux approach, both of which receive excellent coverage in this book. It is a bit pricey, and copies are not indestructible, but if you have thousands of dollars in student debt I suppose $50 to make it more "serviceable" is not a bad bargain.

I bought this edition because it was cheaper than the others, and then there was the added bonus of getting to read it later in Italian if I ever wanted to learn Italian. Of course this is one of my favorite books, and I also enjoyed the afterword.

Brilliant as usual :)

This book was a great addition to the Skulduggery Pleasant series that helped me understand and learn more about the world the books are set in. Landy's writing is, as usual, amazing, witty and humorous. The stories were all hugely entertaining and some were truly scary, such as Get Behind Thee, Bubba Moon. The stories also filled in so much background information for the books. 5 Stars.

This book is a masterpiece! A true finish to an incredible series! I was hanging on for more at the end, I can't wait to see where he takes with after this! This is one of those novels that you cannot spoil, the reader has to experience it for themselves!

I would caution readers that this is not a book that you will feel good about reading

While this book deals with many disturbing subject matters (including child abuse, child sexual abuse, and voyeurism, just to name a few), I felt that it was worth the read. I would caution readers that this is not a book that you will feel good about reading. It doesn't have a happy ending, or even a particularly just ending. However, I felt that Jack Ketchum did an excellent job writing this book. You almost feel like you're part of the problem, taking a backseat in observing the abuse taking place. I realize this sounds awful, and I don't think this book is for everyone. However, as someone who works with the victims of child abuse on a daily basis, I feel that this book is a necessary and useful depiction of how easily people can become abusers.

Excellently Written but too disturbing for me.

I couldn't finish it. I was looking for more of a classic horror scary book. This book wasn't scary in the traditional sense, it was just very disturbing in the whole "humans are the real monsters" sense. I got about half way through it before I had to stop. It reminded me of "A child called it" honestly and that book was disturbing too. Ruth's descent into madness was interesting but I couldn't stomach the vile and evil thing she did and allowed the kids to do to Meg. For what appears to be no reason (granted the reasoning may become apparent in later chapters). It saddens me that this was based on a true story and I'm sure things like this or worse have happened to people but I can't stomach it. 3.5 stars as it was excellently written just too intense/disturbing for me.

Interesting and disturbing read.

I'm not really sure what I can say that others haven't already said. This book is a great [yet horrifying] take on a famous murder. The mob mentality aspect of this crime has haunted and fascinated me for years and since I already loved Jack Ketchum's work, I had to pick up this book as well.

I personally love Ketchum's writing. I'm not an authority on writing, I'm a terrible writer myself, but I think he's very talented and he obviously cares about writing coherently and descriptively.

I rated it 4 stars because it's not completely accurate to the true story it tells. It embellishes and changes some events, and if I recall correctly, even adds a couple that didn't occur in life. That said, I realize it's not meant to be an autobiography or anything, but I feel that the crime was terrible enough without exaggerating it to be even more unthinkable. It somehow cheapens or trivializes the events by showing how much worse they could have been.

This book is not for the faint of heart. Really, none of Ketchum's work is, but it's worth repeating. You will not be able to finish this book if graphic violence disturbs you.

Good effort

It is a good effort but there are many small problems found throughout the book. These problems are mainly in how the author defines various forms of research and tends to confuse the concepts of validity and reliability at times. Some of the main studies cited as examples are not described correctly which makes this reader wonder if the author read each study entirely. There are some important art therapy studies missing, from 2000 to 2009 also and anyone who uses this book should supplement the text with these articles.

I still recommend reading this book as there is very little out there that covers this topic. Good for graduate students who are involved in the basics of research studies.

No longer overwhelmed

When I sat down to my Thesis Proposal course for my MAAT degree, I was overwhelmed! I am "an art therapist to be" not a researcher- my tools are brushes, paints, pencils, photos, images, clay... NOT a proposal of 40+ pages. After the first assignment using Dr. Kapitan's book, I was excited to know I COULD write a thesis. An Introduction to Art Therapy Research is written in a positive approach, broken down into manageable sections and easy to find specific information. I am very happy and relieved that this was the text my professors chose for the course. Thank you Dr. Kapitan!

Easy to Make Stained Glass Lampshades

THis book is excellent for people who are already experienced in working with stained glass. The directions are clear and easy to follow. The designs are lovely. There are templates that you can use that are full sized patterns. There are recommendations for color combinations. All in all a fine book for people with experience and the desire to create Tiffany like lamps. successfully. gloriaber@aol.com

Good Quality Images

This book reflects the quality of all of Mr. Sibbett's publications. I use the images in computer applications and the quality of his images are far superior to other books I have bought. I like the range of complexity one book will contain. My finished lamps are only a few inches in size, his designs translate well to this new application of his designs.

I wish I had known that this was a book only of diagrams. No dimensions or resizing of the patterns. Not helpful to me.

Gripping, suspenseful, and hot!

I absolutely adored this book! It's hot enough to melt your e-reader but it's also got a gripping and intense story. This is a full length continuation of her previous short story, Stockholm Seduction, so if you've read it, then you definitely don't want to miss this one. If you haven't read it, don't worry, she includes it as the prologue in this book. The tension between these two characters and the intense suspense kept me glued to this book. When I had to put it down, it drove me crazy until I could get back to it again. The writing is outstanding, the characters practically leap off the page, and the story is unique and compelling. I loved this one from start to finish, and when I reached the end I still didn't want it to be over.

Scorching hot - not for the fainthearted

So I've read a number of Lily Harlem's books and they never fail to impress me. This one is no exception.

Even though it's a sequal she sets the reader up very well with a quick prologue to explain the situation and give enough background to get you going without the info-dumping a lot of other authors do. The book then moves quickly on from there and continues at a fast clip.

This isn't for the fainthearted. It's erotic and has what could be a few triggers for some readers - kidnap, extortion etc - but I feel it is well handled, sexily written and unless those triggers themselves can stop you from enjoying the book most readers will find it a fun, intense read and thoroughly enjoy it. I know I did. I'm eagerly awaiting more of Ms. Harlems books!

Kidnapping, light bdsm, and menage - what could be better?

I received this book as a review copy in return for an honest review.

Stockholm Seduction by Lily Harlem was one of the first erotic stories I read. It was a quick little read two years ago and I fell in love with it. I was so excited when I saw that Lily Harlem wrote a longer book. I just finished reading Stockholm Surrender this morning and it didn't disappoint me. I loved it! I stared the book yesterday and had a hard time going to bed (I wanted to finish reading). Stockholm Surrender had all my favorite things in a story - kidnapping, light bdsm, and even menage. It's a quick, fun, and sexy book and I strongly recommend it.
