Jean Boulton is a director, strategy consultant and part-time academic at both Bath and Cranfield universities. She teaches, consults, researches and writes about the implications of complexity thinking to management, research and policy development. She has been Chair of Sustain Ltd, Chair of Social Action for Health, a non-executive director of IOPP and Head of Engineering Operations for BAe Commercial Aircraft. She was previously a Senior Lecturer at Cranfield School of Management. She has consulted many blue chip companies and charities including Carillion, RBS, ICI, Lloyds TSB and Oxfam. Her background in theoretical physics coupled with her practical engagement in the fields of management and social research - both through academia, consulting, hands-on management and working as a director and trustee - give her a multi-faceted, informed and practical perspective on the implications of embracing complexity.

Peter Allen developed and ran the Complex Systems Research Centre in the School of Management at Cranfield University since the late 1990s. He has a Ph.D. in Theoretical Physics and from 1970 to 1987 worked with Professor Ilya Prigogine at the Universite Libre de Bruxelles on research that led on to the development of Complexity Science. He is an Editor in Chief of the Journal, Emergence: Complexity and Organization. He has written and edited several books in the field of complexity and socio-economic modelling and published well over 200 articles in a range of fields including ecology, social science, urban and regional science, economics, systems theory, and physics. In 2011 he co-edited the Sage Handbook on Complexity and Management. He has been a consultant to DERA, the Civil Contingencies Secretariat, Department of Trade and Industry, the Canadian Fishing Industry, Elf Aquitaine, the United Nations University, the European Commission and the Asian Development Bank.

Cliff Bowman's research interests focus on the creation and capture of value, complexity, strategy processes and the development and leveraging of strategic assets. He has undertaken consulting assignments for a wide range of organizations and is the author of ten books and sixty articles. Cliff is a past Chairman of the European Case Clearing House, was Faculty Dean of Cranfield School of Management from 1998 to 2006, and holds two non-executive director positions.

Need to let go

"I feel that we have increasingly been indoctrinated in the West with this idea that the world works like a machine and that to improve things we need to define things better, we need to have better processes, we need to have tighter control." This statement by Jean Boulton, one of the authors, comes near the end of the book and is its entire premise and justification. While enormous progress has been made, particularly in the natural sciences, using an analytic and reductionist approach, we need a mindset that understands the world as comprising open, not closed systems, in which situations emerge as the result of multiple and interconnected causes and are difficult to predict let alone control.

For those who manage enterprises, the lessons are clear. A system such as your business environment or your company may be stable and settle into a state of self-organization in which processes are 'locked in' and unchanging. Such a system is not resilient and is vulnerable to collapse if conditions change. Resiliency comes from internal variation and a level of redundancy that may contradict a tidy, mechanistic approach to organization, but can result in adaptability to changing conditions. The complexity world view does not see the elements of a system and attempt to control them individually, nor does it try to reduce any system to its essential elements; it views an excess of diversity and redundancy as essential to the long-term survival of any system.

The book is not highly theoretical. The authors have chosen to lay out in broad strokes the principles of a complexity worldview, and describe their implications for several areas of activity, including the social sciences, international development, management, and strategy. For managers, the latter two areas are particularly helpful, and offer an alternative to the accepted approaches to budgeting, target setting, and strategic planning. While you can set objectives, "often objectives are met due to factors coming together and we get the glory for something that was happening anyway" (p. 125). This wouldn't go over too well in an annual performance appraisal meeting, but does jibe with the reality that many employees experience. The implications described are to plan, but don't overplan; build flexibility into your planning and don't expect the outcome you anticipate; and give up the illusion of control that strategic planning typically brings.

It seems sometimes that the authors are working a bit too hard to push a view that appears obvious when you think about it. But for those who are involved in budgeting, target setting, specifying student learning outcomes, or any other activity that attempts to impose some control over a situation, it will come across as a refreshing and realistic reminder of how the world really works.

Why complexity thinking matters.

A good explanation of the complexity mindset. I come at this from a background on Agile practices which work for complex projects. This book doesn't cover agile development but helps with some common ideas (self-organizing) and how they apply to strategy, management and more. Not a book of how but more on what and why. Supports George Box's thought that " All models are wrong but some are useful". This book is very useful.

This volume contains the contributions from the speakers at the NATO Advanced Research Workshop on "Structure of the Photosynthetic Bacterial Reaction Center X-ray Crystallography and Optical Spectroscopy with Polarized Light" which was held at the "Maison d'Hotes" of the Centre d'Etudes Nucleaires de Cadarache in the South of France, 20-25 September, 1987. This meeting continued in the spirit of a previous workshop which took place in Feldafing (FRG), March 1985. Photosynthetic reaction centers are intrinsic membrane proteins which, by performing a photoinduced transmembrane charge separation, are responsible for the conversion and storage of solar energy. Since the pioneering work of Reed and Clayton (1968) on the isolation of the reaction center from photosynthetic bacteria, optical spectroscopy with polarized light has been one of the main tools used to investigate the geometrical arrangement of the various chromophores in these systems. The recent elucidation by X-ray crystallography of the structure of several bacterial reaction centers, a breakthrough initiated by Michel and Deisenhofer, has provided us with the atomic coordinates of the pigments and some details about their interactions with neighboring aminoacid residues. This essential step has given a large impetus both to experimentalists and to theoreticians who are now attempting to relate the X-ray structural model to the optical properties of the reaction center and ultimately to its primary biological function.

Dr. Rallo has written a great book revealing the dangers of getting involved in martial arts, and he has several interviews on different talk shows, available on BlogTalk Radio or iTunes.

Full of Misinformation and an Unreliable Narrator

This book is, as others said poorly researched.

But Rallo's claims to his "extensive" experience with martial arts fall flat when you realize he has almost no history or records of being involved with the styles he claims. If he was nearly as good as he claims he was, then it would be easy to find someone who had heard of him--martial arts isn't something that fades and many of the experts 30-40+ years ago are still around today. He gets a lot incorrect about how martial arts really works and his words come from the source of a tin-foil hat. The man is not who he says he is. In video interviews he brags about how easily he could kill a person with martial arts--something no true master would ever have said. That is not the purpose of martial arts. Overall Christians put the book down, this is not going to turn your children into witches.

About the Author

Alan Launder has been involved in sports for more than 50 years as a competitor, teacher, and coach. He has worked in Great Britain, the United States, and Australia.

He has taught at elementary, secondary, and tertiary levels with considerable success. His period as head of the physical education department at Dr. Challoners Grammar School in England in the 1960s was especially rewarding because in a relatively brief period the school became a sporting powerhouse.

For the last 20 years of his professional career he was a senior lecturer at the University of South Australia, where he helped to develop a four-year degree course in physical education teacher education that became a model for programs in other countries. He won the 1992 Rothmans Prize in recognition of his ability to develop and communicate innovative ideas in sport education.

Launder holds senior coaching qualifications from Great Britain and Australia in soccer, cricket, basketball, track and field, and table tennis. In 1984, he was a coach of the Australian track and field team at the Los Angeles Olympics. In 1986 and 1988 he was the head coach of the Australian team at the World Junior Championships. In 1991, 1993, and 1995, he was a coach of the track and field team at the World University Games. Most recently he has served as a consultant to the Australian Track and Field Coaches Association and to the Australian Lacrosse Association as they revised their coach education programs.

Since 1973 Launder was also involved in developing and teaching the curriculum for the Australian Track and Field Coaches Association and was a primary contributor to the internationally respected coaching magazine Modern Athlete and Coach. As the national event coach for pole vault, he has seen Australia move into world-class standing with many fine results, including a female world-record holder, the men’s world champion in 2001 and 2009, and the men’s Olympic champion in 2008.

Launder considers his major career achievement to be the development of the philosophical and pedagogical principles that underpin the Five Star Award, an innovative approach to teaching track and field that has been adopted by more than 20 countries. In 2000, Queen Elizabeth II made Launder a member of the Order of Australia for services to Australian sport.

In his spare time, Launder enjoys sporting art, travel, snow skiing, and fine wine. He lives with his wife, Jennifer, in Salisbury East, South Australia. He has two sons, David and Richard, and four grandsons.

Wendy Piltz has been involved in physical education and sports for many years as a player, teacher, and coach. Her involvement in a range of sports and various outdoor pursuits is a significant aspect of her lifestyle and expertise. An accomplished athlete, Piltz has competed at the district level in basketball and netball, the state level in touch, and at the national level in women’s cricket and lacrosse.

Wendy is a committed and enthusiastic educator who has worked in elementary, secondary, and tertiary sectors. She completed her undergraduate degree in physical education from the University of South Australia (formerly ACAE) in 1978 and her master’s degree in social psychology from the University of Oregon in 1980. Wendy taught in the public secondary school system in South Australia for 10 years as a specialist health and physical education teacher and a school coach of basketball, lacrosse, cricket, volleyball, touch, athletics, and netball. In addition, she worked with elementary-aged children and served as a volunteer for 5 years as the basketball coach of children in grades 3 to 7 at her daughter’s primary school. Her coaching experience extends to a state level in women’s cricket, and she is currently coaching lacrosse at the North Adelaide club in South Australia.

Wendy began working at the University of South Australia in 1990, where she joined Alan Launder as a colleague on staff in the health and physical education faculty working in teaching and curriculum, sport pedagogy, and group dynamics. Since 1998 she has redesigned the preservice programs in health and physical education to accommodate changing program structures and has embedded Play Practice models into these programs. A key area of Wendy’s research focuses on teaching and learning oriented to practice-based study on the efficacy of this approach. Her expertise in teaching, innovation in course and program design, leadership, and mentoring have been acknowledged through numerous teaching awards at the university. In addition, Wendy has received two national Australian Sports Commission awards for outstanding services to sport and innovation in lacrosse coach education.

Wendy regularly presents at international and national conferences in sport pedagogy, focusing on teaching and learning using Play Practice, team development, and teacher and coach education. She also maintains a sustained service to local communities, conducting professional development workshops for teachers through the Australian Council for Health, Physical Education, and Recreation (ACHPER), sporting clubs, and state departments of sport and recreation. Wendy has served as a consultant for the American Sport Education Program (ASEP), Australian Sports Commission (ASC), Australian Football League, South Australian National Football League, Women’s Lacrosse Australia, and Australian Touch Association.

In her free time, Wendy enjoys being with friends, swimming, cycling, and adventure travel. She loves the mountains and is passionate about snow skiing. Wendy resides in Adelaide, South Australia, and has one daughter, Kelsey.

Lucy, Harold, and David have recently become orphans and have no family left, no one to take care of them. They are living on the streets, stealing what they need to survive, like thousands of other unfortunate kids in the early 1900s.

Then they get lucky. Lucy and her little brothers are welcomed into an orphanage where they get clean clothes and warm meals. But this orphanage sends groups of children to the Midwest on orphan trains. They are paraded in front of farmers who pick and choose kids they want to take home-and David is taken at one of the first stops, without Lucy or Harold.

Verla Kay's celebrated verse has been called "lyrical" and "rollicking" and Ken Stark's warm, poignant paintings have been described as "as sun-dappled as a happy memory." Together, they make the plight of these orphans both heartbreaking and hopeful.

Grade 2-4-During the late 1800s and early 1900s, thousands of children from East Coast cities were shipped by train to the Midwest and given to whomever would take them. This illustrated poem follows three siblings' journey from their parents' death to a city orphanage to their new homes. The poem is written in short, terse lines that echo the rhythm of the swaying train. Some of the rhymes are contrived, such as "Slowly learning,/Day by day./Lucy giggles./`Goat, don't play!'" but most are more natural, e.g., "Station nearing,/Whistle blows./Wiping faces, /Smoothing clothes." An author's note gives a few pertinent facts about the Orphan Trains. Stark's realistic oil paintings appear on full spreads, and earth tones predominate. The children have personality, but some of their expressions are slightly exaggerated. While this is a good introduction to the subject, Eve Bunting's Train to Somewhere (Clarion, 1996) is a longer, more involved story and is a better choice for children with sufficient attention spans.

K-Gr. 2. In titles such as Tattered Sails (2001), about a pilgrim family's journey from England, Kay uses short, rhyming text to describe complicated, sometimes painful historical events. In this offering, three children watch their parents die of typhoid fever before they are sent on an orphan train to the Midwest and adopted by farm families. The chanting rhythm of the rhymes is sometimes a jarring contrast to the frightening subject: "Parents coughing, / Shaking chill / stomachs aching / deathly ill." But with just a few words per page, Kay gives an admirable sense of the orphan-train experience, and Stark's vibrant acrylics, filled with historical detail, contrast the horror of the parents' sickroom with the brilliant green midwestern landscape. There are no neat conclusions here. Kay's short text conveys subtle emotions along with facts: the "twinge of guilt" that a girl feels after she finally settles into a cozy new home, for example. Teachers introducing this in an elementary social studies curriculum will enjoy the accessible author's note, which offers historical background. Gillian Engberg

Touching story told with care

Verla Kay has an amazing ability to tell a complex story in few words. I think kids will be intrigued by this story of children sent West to be adopted by whoever shows up at the station. It caught my attention. What a lottery of fate! It's not grim or depressing, but it's not overly "sweetened", either. It's thought provoking and ends with a believable note of hope and happiness for the main characters. The illustrations really enhance the story, too.

worth the money

I struggled on my first couple of test in this class and finally had to do something about it. I bought this book and did really well on the test. This book is a great study guide after you have read the textbook to help show you if you know the information.

Earl Browning, M.Ed., is a native of Logan, West Virginia. He currently serves as president of Telecoach, Inc. an organization that conducts football clinics and produces the Coach of the Year Football Manuals. A 1958 graduate of Marshall University, he earned his M.Ed. and Rank I education certification from the University of Louisville. From 1958 to 1975, he coached football at various Louisville-area high schools. Among the honors he has been accorded are his appointments to the National Football Foundation and to the College Hall of Fame Advisory Committee on moving the museum to South Bend, Indiana. He was named to the Greater Louisville Football Coaches Association Hall of Legends in 1998.
