Very good tutorial on PowerBI

This is an outstanding book covering the one of the newest technologies from Microsoft that's creating a buzz. This is well structured and clearly presented, and is an excellent tutorial for those starting out with PowerBI. It provides clear, step-by-step instructions on how to use all of the features of PowerBI, and highlights the exciting features that make for a compelling dashboard or analytic. It's packed with a lot of content, and the eBook version makes this even easier to use as a reference.The examples used are not limited to CRM though - other examples are used as well, making it much more rounded. Overall, Steve Ivie does an excellent job of distilling a tremendous amount of information about this new product into an easy-to-follow and very digestible format, and providing a clear picture of how, and where, this technology can add value.

Very practical guide - can apply what I've learned ASAP.

Superb book for a wide ranging audience as the book outlines in the preface. The book does a great job of breaking down how to build a sales productivity dashboard in a way that's easy to follow. Lots of visuals and step-by-steps! The way 'warnings' and 'tips and tricks' are called out make them easy to spot and refer back to. I especially liked the section on combining CRM and ERP data and building a combined Customer Health Report to include in the sales productivity dashboard.

This is a fantastic book for novices and experts alike. I was working on a project that actually required me show Power BI Dashboard on a CRM Dashboard. Up until then, I was using SSRS reports which did not really capture the fully picture. This is the only book that I found that was 100% useful. keep it up.

About the Author
Dr. Gulati is Jaime and Josefina Chua Tiampo Professor at the Harvard Business School. An expert on leadership, strategy, and organizational issues in firms today, his recent work explores leadership and strategic challenges for building high growth organizations in turbulent markets. Prior work has focused on the enablers and implications of within-firm and inter-firm collaboration. Dr. Gulati has examined both when and how firms should leverage greater connectivity within and across their boundaries to enhance performance. Dr. Gulati teaches courses in Harvard Business School's MBA, AMP, and Executive Education programs. He has directed several executive programs on topics such as Building and Leading Customer Centric Organizations, Managing Customer Relationships, Managing Strategic Alliances, Mergers & Acquisitions, and Sustaining Competitive Advantage in Turbulent Markets. He is also active in custom executive education. He has received numerous awards for his teaching, including the Best Professor Award for his teaching in the MBA and executive MBA programs at the Kellogg School, where he was on the faculty prior to coming to Harvard. Dr. Gulati has been a frequent guest on CNBC and has been a panelist for series on the Business of Innovation, Collaboration, and Leadership Vision. He holds a Ph.D. from Harvard University, a Master's Degree in Management from M.I.T.'s Sloan School of Management, and two Bachelor's Degrees in Computer Science and Economics from Washington State University and St. Stephens College, New Delhi, respectively. Dr. Anthony Mayo is the Thomas S. Murphy Senior Lecturer of Business Administration in the Organizational Behavior Unit of Harvard Business School. He teaches FIELD (Field Immersion and Experiential Leadership Development), a new required experiential, field-based course in the first year of the MBA Program. Previously, he co-created and taught the course "Great Business Leaders: The Importance of Contextual Intelligence". Dr. Mayo also teaches extensively in leadership-based executive education programs. He co-authored In Their Time: The Greatest Business Leaders of the 20th Century, which has been translated into five languages and two corresponding books in the series that profile business leaders. These books are derived from the development of the Great American Business Leaders database that co-authors Dr. Nohria and Dr. Mayo created. Dr. Mayo also serves as the director of the HBS Leadership Initiative, an interdisciplinary center that serves as a catalyst for cutting-edge research and course development on leaders and leadership. As director, Dr. Mayo oversees comprehensive research projects on emerging, global, and legacy leadership and manages a number of executive education programs on leadership development. He co-created the High Potentials Leadership Development and the Leadership Best Practices programs and has been a principal contributor to a number of custom leadership development programs. He designed and currently oversees the executive coaching component of Harvard Business School's Program for Leadership Development.Dr. Mayo completed his MBA from Harvard Business School and received his bachelor's degree, summa cum laude, from Boston College. Dr. Nitin Nohria serves as the 10th dean of Harvard Business School. He previously served as co-chair of the Leadership Initiative, Senior Associate Dean of Faculty Development, and head of the Organizational Behavior unit. His intellectual interests center on human motivation, leadership, corporate transformation and accountability, and sustainable economic and human performance. A prolific author, Dr. Nohria has co-authored or co-edited 16 books, including a recent Handbook Of Leadership Theory and Practice, a compendium dedicated to advancing research on leadership. He also recently co-authored a book chronicling how leaders from various backgrounds rose to power in American businesses, which joins two others in the series that detail the greatest business leaders in the 20th century and offers historic leadership profiles. He also co-launched a Harvard Business Review six-week blog on how leadership might look in the future. This book was not good not bad just ok. For some reason it just never really flowed. It had so much potential with an interesting mystery, a quirky lead character, an evil villain, and a town full of side stories. However, nothing really gelled. I wouldn't recommend as a must read but if you have nothing else on hand, it will do

David Chandler (david.chandler@ucdenver.edu) is Assistant Professor of Management and Co-Director of the Managing for Sustainability Program at the University of Colorado Denver Business School. His research focuses on the dynamic interface between the organization and its institutional environment, which he operationalizes within the context of corporate social responsibility, business ethics, and firm/stakeholder relations. His research has been published in Organization Science, Academy of Management Review, Journal of Management, and Strategic Organization. Additional related publications include the book Corporate Social Responsibility: A Strategic Perspective (Business Expert Press, 2014). He received his Ph.D. in Management from The University of Texas at Austin.

Had I walked by 1859 Geary Boulevard in San Francisco when Peoples Temple was in full swing, I certainly would have been drawn to the doorway.

I grew up in a strict Christian family with an adopted black brother; race and religion were the dominant themes of my childhood. In our small Indiana town, David and I often felt self-conscious walking down the street together. Strangers scowled at us, and sometimes called us names. I wrote about the challenges of our relationship in my memoir, Jesus Land.

Suffice it to say, David and I would have been thrilled and amazed by Peoples Temple, a church where blacks and whites worshipped side by side, the preacher taught social justice instead of damnation, and the gospel choir transported the congregation to a loftier realm. We longed for such a place.

Unfortunately, the laudable aspects of Peoples Temple have been forgotten in the horrifying wake of Jonestown.

I stumbled onto writing this book by accident. I was writing a satirical novel about a charismatic preacher who takes over a fictional Indiana town, when I remembered Jim Jones was from Indiana, and Googled him. I learned that the FBI had released fifty thousand pages of documents, including diaries, meeting notes, and crop reports, as well as one thousand audiotapes that agents found in Jonestown after the massacre, and that no one had used this material to write a comprehensive history of the doomed community. Once I started digging through the files, I couldn't tear myself away.

It was easy to set my novel aside. I believe that true stories are more powerful, in a meaningful, existential way, than made-up ones. Learning about other peoples' lives somehow puts one's own life in sharper relief.

Aside from race and religion, there were other elements of the Peoples Temple story that resonated with me. When David and I were teenagers, our parents sent us to a Christian reform school in the Dominican Republic that had some uncanny parallels with Jonestown. I could empathize with the residents' sense of isolation and desperation.

You won't find the word cult in this book, unless I'm directly citing a source that uses the word. My aim here is to help readers understand the reasons that people were drawn to Jim Jones and his church, and how so many of them ended up dying in a mass-murder suicide on November 18, 1978. The word cult only discourages intellectual curiosity and empathy. As one survivor told me, nobody joins a cult.

To date, the Jonestown canon has veered between sensational media accounts and narrow academic studies. In this book, I endeavor to tell the Jonestown story on a grander, more human, scale.

A Gripping Read, The Best Account of Jonestown

Just before I read this book, I read Tim Reiterman's "Raven: The Untold Story of the Rev. Jim Jones and His People." I assumed that "Raven," (a very in-depth account) was the final and definitive word about Jonestown (especially considering that Reiterman was a newspaper reporter who was present during the final days at Jonestown. After reading "Raven," I wondered if any other book could really add anything new or significant to Reiterman's very lengthy and thorough account. But I went ahead and picked up Scheeres' book after reading the excellent reviews it garnered. Plus, I was just eager to read more about this tragic event. I found that "A Thousand Lives" is actually better than "Raven." It is highly readable and very gripping. What's more, even if you've read "Raven" you will find a great deal of fascinating information in "A Thousand Lives." There is very little duplication between the books. It seems that Scheeres had access to a lot of archive materials that were not available when "Raven" was written. Scheeres has an excellent writing style that really pulls you in. "Raven" is a good book, but I think "A Thousand Lives" is even better. However, I recommend both books to anyone who is interested in this tragic story.

Amazing book... Not the best book seller.

Wow. Amazing story. It was scary how very easy it was to empathize with the decisions that the victims made throughout the story. Lots of details with good characterizations. I really enjoyed reading about the history of this event. Very highly recommend.

The church in San Francisco has been converted into a post office, but there's a memorial at the cemetery.

Book was in rough shape - even for the price. Shipping was about a week.

An Excellent Easy Read About Jonestown!

The author, Julia Scheeres, had already her own experiences with a similar camp in the Dominican Republic regarding religion which she wrote in her own memoir, "Jesus Land." In this book about Jonestown, the Peoples Temple, and Jim Jones, she writes for those of us who need to further understand the situation that occurred on November 18,1978.

In our world, Jonestown Massacre is rarely mentioned about or talked about and perhaps back in 1978 and 1979 where 24 cable news channels are non-existent that news of Jonestown spread sporadically in the newspapers and television accounts. Guyana at the time didn't have television sets or stations but relied on radios.

For those of us who have spent years trying to figure out what happened. This author provides fresh insight from some of the survivors like Tommy Bogue and his family who joined but defected on that catastrophic day leaving behind his sister, Marilee Bogue, who would die among the others. Marilee was a true believer and wouldn't leave by her own free will even if given the opportunity.

Then the author goes further into detailing about Edith Roller, a loner by choice, educated, cultured, teacher, and who kept a daily diary of the events regarding Jonestown including her own fears and worries. The author really goes into detail about some of the people who were involved in this tragedy.

The author also writes about the only survivor who slept through it all, Hyacinth Thrash, an elderly African American woman with a permanent limp. She had awoken the next day to the horrors of the Jonestown Massacre. She hadn't attended the final white night because she was too tired and frail to go but her sister, Zipporah Edwards, had gone to the event and never returned.

The author goes into details about what life was like in Jonestown including the horrors. She doesn't go into complete details about what else was going on there but she gives a good example of the dire situation.

I think if anybody wants to read about Jonestown without being overwelmed by details and information. This book would provide a great overview and enlightenment about the people who lived and died. To this day, most people don't refer to Jonestown or are even aware of what happened except to news reports and newspapers.

Jim Jones Jr. made an appearance on the Oprah Winfrey Show but he shared the hour with John Wayne Gacy's poor sister about relatives who did horrible things to others. Well, maybe if you keep an open mind about the situation in Jonestown.

The Peoples Temple didn't happen overnight. Many of that generation wanted change in their society. The Peoples Temple offered an immediate family and friends along with health care services for it's members. Drug addicts would be rehabilitated long before clinics and centers were there to help them. Lonely senior citizens would have companionship and friendship with others. The Peoples Temple attracted people from all walks of life to it's organization in making the world a better place. In the end on November 18,1978 which reads like a horror book, the Peoples Temple's light was extinguished by a madman for the final time in order.

I hope readers will be fascinated by this book and I encourage those out there interested in buying this book. For those of us, I'm still learning from the events on November 18,1978. I would suggest that the author have provided maps to further familiarize the areas in South America and North America and a list of those who perished that day. The author couldn't write everything down but she did provide a sensitive overview of Jonestown which should be greatly admired. I also suggest photographs of some of the people involved as well to further relate readers to the event.

It's time that everybody looked at Jonestown and the events of November 18,1978 with new light and education over ignorance and ridicule.

Based on popular courses taught by the two authors, Fundamentals of Heterocyclic Chem-istry enables students to master the basics of heterocyclic chemistry and synthesis. The text features detailed examples throughout and a clear, straightforward approach, making it easy to grasp a vast, complex field. Moreover, with its emphasis on the biological uses of heterocyclic compounds, the text enables students to learn a variety of practical applications in natural products and pharmaceutical research.

Following an introduction to basic nomenclature, Fundamentals of Heterocyclic Chemistry explores the importance of heterocycles in nature and in synthetic pharmaceuticals. Next, synthetic methods are introduced with detailed descriptions of specific reactions used to construct heterocycles. The authors have provided a brief review of each reaction presented.

The text moves on to explore special properties of various aromatic heterocyclic systems. Next, the authors explain the synthesis of some important families of heterocycles, using plenty of examples for illustration, mostly from the field of pharmaceutics. The final chapter covers saturated heterocycles, with an emphasis on stereochemical properties.

This text is ideal for undergraduate and graduate students in organic chemistry as well as pharmaceutical and medicinal chemistry. Most of the chapters include problem sets, enabling students to test and build their knowledge of key concepts by applying principles of heterocyclic chemistry to solve real problems.

About the Author
LOUIS D. QUIN, PhD, is an Adjunct Professor at the University of North Carolina Wilmington. Dr. Quin began his academic career in 1956 with the Department of Chemistry at Duke University, serving as department chairman from 1970 to 1976. After retiring from Duke, he went to the University of Massachusetts Amherst to head up its Chemistry Department, retiring in 1996. Dr. Quin has written 250 research papers and written or co-edited eight books on the subject of organophosphorus chemistry.

JOHN A. TYRELL, PhD, is Visiting Scientist in the Department of Chemistry and Bio-chemistry at the University of North Carolina Wilmington, where he teaches Fundamentals of Heterocyclic Chemistry among other courses. Dr. Tyrell holds sixty-eight patents and has more than twenty years of industrial research experience, much of it focused on heterocyclic chemistry research at Lederle Laboratories, General Electric Plastics, and OxyChem.

Thomas Pheasant is an award-winning interior designer who has been recognized by Architectural Digest as one of the "Deans of American Design," and in 2005 he was named the Andrew Martin International Designer of the Year. Victoria Sant is the president of the National Gallery of Art, in Washington, D.C. Jeff Turrentine has been a contributing writer and editor at Architectural Digest and has written for the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, and the Washington Post.

Simply Serene...Simply Wonderful!

I'm a huge fan of Thomas Pheasant - both the work and the man. I buy lots of design books, and usually after a quick flip through, they go on the bookshelf to look pretty and collect dust with the rest. This one...this one stays on my desk as I pour over the pages and find inspiration in each image. I keep finding myself saying "oh...look at that!", "look at that!". His work is the embodiment of elegance.

You can't help but be inspired by this book!

Buy what you love

In this hectic life it is inspiring to read and look at this book. You can feel the beauty and peacefulness that can be brought to any home. While the photographs (some by Pheasant himself) are helpful his actual descriptions of his process in how he thinks and views a space is what is most instructive. Simply serene is how we want our home, our sanctuary to be and Pheasant helps us make it so.
