A first milestone in the study of Swarm Intelligence

The book of Bonabeau, Dorigo, and Theraulaz is an excellent example of synergetic work between a physicist, an engineer, and a biologist. The Swarm Intelligence principles are first described and understood through models in natural systems and then translated in optimization algorithms, distributed algorithms for robotic control, and so on. Even if the book does not completely succeed in linking all three disciplines together - computer science, engineering, and biology - under a sound, common formalism, it represents an extremely up to date collection of work carried out worldwide in the field of Swarm Intelligence. I strongly believe in the future of this field and of its applications to problems hard to tackle with classical techniques. This book summarizes in an very equilibrated way the early, promising steps of Swarm Intelligence.

Impressively good, but not an introduction

Compared to "Swarm intelligence" by James Kennedy, this one is not introductive but gets quite deep into the working of applying the "swarm" paradigm to optimization problems. I would rather recommmend for a person not used to meta-heuristics and optimization to first go to the book by Kennedy. Only if one is interested in using swarm for solving real optimization problems reading this one is a good idea.
This book illustrates several features of swarm behavior that can be leveraged for optimization. The authors writing style is equivalent to technical papers, so be prepared...this is no easy book.

Life changing...a must read!

I grew up with very low self esteem, and it has affected my adult life in a very negative way, ie...settling for less than what I want, relationships ending, no self respect, etc.
I bought this book about a month ago, and the impact on my way of thinking and behaving is awesome! I know I will always have to fight my bad habits from the past, but this book has given me the tools to change my life!

Great Spanish/English Dictionary

I researched Spanish/English dictionaries before I searched on Amazon, so I had an idea what I was looking for. This dictionary had a review done by a Masters Student, in fact his thesis was on rating the usefulness and accuracy of Spanish/English dictionaries. He gave a 6 point list of things to look at in a dictionary before buying one. First was a reputable publisher and Larousse was one of them on his list. Second was to look up an English word with many meanings (hoop), then look at the entry after the English. The entry should not be just a list of Spanish words. There should be English words next to the Spanish giving more detailed information). Hoop in this dictionary is followed by earring, steps to take to succeed in the business world etc.This helps you to choose the best Spanish word for the context it is being used in. Third he said the dictionary should give a geographic code so you know which words are used more in Europe or South America. This dictionary goes even further into detail. Fourth he said to make sure the dictionary has a good pronunciation guide. This one is very easy to use and understand. Fifth make sure the dictionary has modern words such as cell phone, wireless, conference call, slang phrases like text me etc. Sixth look at the dictionary pages, are they well organized, one column per page, good use of color and bold, can YOU use the dictionary easily. I actually used this edition online to get a better feel for how I would use it. I am very pleased with the results. This book was sold as New in Like New condition with a huge reduction on price. The only blemish I can find in a very very small mark from the publisher packing the cover next to a moist spot. I would recommend this dictionary to English speaking students who wish to have a desk top reliable Spanish/English dictionary. This is a big book, but it is very helpful as I progress in my studies to translate more complex conversations as well as works of literature.

An invaluable companion to the serious Spanish-translator. Big enough to have entries on all sorts of idiomatic expressions involving all sorts of swear words---and many within each individual swear word, too---. And don't worry that it's a few years old. Online resources can make up for that gap. Never underestimate the value of a honking big dictionary on your desk!

Missing pages

Yes, I read the previous reviews on missing pages and hope that I would not have the same problem. Unfortunately, I have discovered some missing pages. In my short time, I have discovered pages 61 to 76 of the English-Spanish section to be missing. Don't know what else is missing. I guess I will find out.

Aside from the missing pages, it is by its very nature very comprehensive (that's why I bought it), and gives lots of different examples for most of the words. If not for the missing pages, I would recommend it as a desk reference copy (obviously not for travel). Who can I complain to about the missing pages?

scraped me off the floor!

This book, I came across by 'chance' ? And read, while I was struggling in the aftermath of a relationship break up. My urge to cling on and recover what was lost was destroying me emotionally. (I did not realise God was pruning me!)
I let go ..not instantly...placing that person in His heart. Finally once my own heart was empty and open He poured His gifts in ...the Holy Spirit poured through me in loving forgiveness of that person as I lifted up that others heart. I have moved on, needing only God's approval and love. Thank you for this book!!

How to Let Go and Let God is not only an easy read; but, it is an awesome book. Regina Baker does an excellent job of sharing with us how the tragedies in her life were events that escorted (and maybe even catapulted) her into new and triumphant places in God. I especially appreciate that it is easy for one to relate to what is being communicated. This book will be a resource that I will keep and re-read as a reminder that God is ALWAYS in control. let Go and Grow

This was a great book because it really makes you take a look at yourself and your relationship with God! Regina and I had similar experiences but the way we dealt with them were different at the same time. I had some other things that I had never dealt with in my life that were back and I realize the process I went through was because I was holding on to them! This book helped me realize that I really needed to let go and turn them over to God because he is in control and has all power in his hands! Do this and watch your life change! Thank you, Ms. Regina Baker, to God be the Glory!!!

Bradley Somer’s novel “Fishbowl” is quirky, funny, and touching. Ian lives alone, with the exception of Troy the snail, in his "Fishbowl" on the 27th and top floor of the Seville on Roxy. Given to Connor Radley by his most recent girlfriend Katie, Ian is named for his childhood best friend, a golden retriever. As the novel moves forward, Ian is falling through the air toward the earth.

The other individuals, who live in the high-rise, and Connor – as well as Katie who frequently spends the night - form an eclectic group of people who each face their own issues and must learn that no one can exist alone and in a vacuum. Garth, a burly construction worker, harbors a secret. Herman, an orphan living with his grandfather, blacks out under stress. Claire, an agoraphobic – or as she prefers to be called “aggressively introverted” individual – is a now unemployed phone sex worker. Petunia Delilah, a hair stylist who lives with her boyfriend Danny, is pregnant and must avoid strenuous activity. Jimenez, who maintains the Seville on Roxy, lives on its third floor.

Fifty-five short chapters make up the text of “Fishbowl”; chapter titles have a melodramatic tone and seem as if they were from the silent film era. The introductory chapter feels as if it could be one of two things – the “majestic” introductory text of a film that is being narrated by James Earl Jones, or a novel that is actually “…a dissertation in progress…” Subsequent chapters are arranged in groups of seven, Ian’s chapters begin each grouping. In these chapters, observations of and comments about life and living from Ian's perspective take center stage. Ian’s chapters form the thread that helps bind the lives of the other characters into a cohesive story. Further, the narratives in Ian's chapters are the most poignant as the discourse highlights the isolation of his fishbowl and the loneliness of his almost solitary life. Readers will quickly recognize Ian’s narrative applies to the isolated apartment living of the primarily solitary characters.

Chapters focusing on or involving each of the primary human characters follow those focusing on Ian. As Ian descends toward earth, each of the chapters reveals details of and secrets about the individual who is the focus of the chapter. The failure of the building's elevators to operate, results in the characters having to use the stairs or to rely on other tenants instead of existing cocooned in their own apartments. This makes the real point of “Fishbowl” clear.

Bradley Somer is an extraordinary author. Not only is he able to write a unique, engaging story, he does so using a broad vocabulary and complex, well-crafted sentences. Because it uses an unusually rich vocabulary, you may need to have a dictionary nearby in order to appreciate every nuance and every idea presented. Readers will enjoy his refreshing style that is so different from much of contemporary literature. Readers should be aware that “Fishbowl” does contain sexual situations and references, as well as some profanity.

I loved “Fishbowl” and readers who enjoy a novel that is not simply a cookie-cutter work of fiction will definitely want to include “Fishbowl” when choosing what to read next.

Ian, the goldfish, takes the ultimate leap of faith. Poor Ian.

Fishbowl has been my favorite book so far this year. It’s a simple story: There is a big apartment house and a fish named Ian falls from his bowl on the 27th floor. Now, you take that premise and put it in the hands of an author as capable as Bradley Somer and you have yourself a rollicking, funny, sexy, tragic slice of life seen as Ian takes his nose-dive.

The book can almost be told with the longish epigrams that start each chapter i.e.: Chapter 4 “In Which We Meet the Villain Connor and the Evil Seductress Faye”. Or Chapter 26 “In Which Homeschooled Herman Witnesses His First Life-Altering Moment”. There is a lot of the unique humorous style of Douglas Adams (The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy) or Graeme Simsion (The Rosie Project) going on in this book.

The residents of The Seville on Roxy are laid out cafeteria style for the reader’s enjoyment – a little bit of this and a little bit of that. Ian, the goldfish was a gift to Connor by his girlfriend Katie. Unfortunately there is a third point on this love triangle, namely the evil Faye. Among other residents in the building there is the super Jimenez who feels invisible and under-appreciated ; Petunia Delilah who is pregnant with sudden tingles in her nether regions; There is a shut-in who has a penchant for naughty words; and Herman, who is quite sure he can travel through time. In all, The Seville on Roxy is a microcosm of life in the Big City. Ian, the goldfish, may be the only one in the building that is willing to take a risk.

One last comment: Great story, great concept, great writing BUT my favorite part of the book is that on the far right hand margin each page has a tiny ink goldfish that if the pages are flipped will plunge down the column like Ian plummeting from the 27th floor. When is the last time you’ve found a “Flip-book”? There is so much I’d love to relate about this book but I can only urge you to read it and hopefully enjoy it as much as I.

A Conquest Like No Other is a beautifully breathtaking and intensely touching story of gently patience, boundless love, and undying determination. I can’t get enough of these wonderful characters and this stunning storyline. My heart was viciously pulled apart and then slowly healed by an incredibly pure and passionate love. What I found within these pages brightened my heart and warmed my soul with a hope that you don’t often see in a lifetime. This story will rock your world and open your heart to the unbelievable and the profound.

Nikki is a beautiful woman with a heart of gold that has had to endure the dark and unthinkable side of humanity. She has pulled herself out of the dark pit a little each day to the best of her ability, but she knows she still has a long way to go. She desperately wants what she had before, but that would take a miracle. When Viper enters her life, her world is tilted and she knows she will never be the same again. She is beginning to feel things she hasn’t felt in a very long time, and they are both exciting and scaring her at the same time. Seeing that Viper is her best friend’s brother-in-law, she knows all too well how more than friendship would complicate things between them. She will never do anything to jeopardize her relationship with her best friend Gabby, so she resolves to just stay away far away from Viper and ignore her feelings. Unfortunately, Viper has other ideas, and he will do whatever it takes to bring Nikki back to life. Will Viper’s determination and love be enough to revive Nikki’s heart and breathe life into her dying soul, or will she resign herself to a life of nightmares and constant loneliness.

I have officially fallen in love with Viper and his brothers! They are such a wonderfully unique group of characters that have captured my heart and my attention. It was amazing getting to know them, and I can’t wait to learn more about them and their stories. Watching Viper and Nikki get together was truly incredible, and I couldn’t get enough of them. They are such a beautiful couple, and I loved how much Viper’s love for her was so true and pure. It was astounding, and I hated to say goodbye to them. I hope to see them again as well as learn about Judge and Nat. That sounds like another amazing story to cherish and enjoy.

Emma Anderson is a new author to me that I am absolutely thrilled to find! Her writing has excited my heart and shaken its foundation to the core. Only a magnificent story filled with such a brilliant love can move my heart so deeply. If you are looking for a story that will touch the deepest part of your soul, then you need to check out Emma Anderson’s books. I can’t wait to read more stories by this fantastically talented author!

This is the first book I’ve read from Emma Anderson and I was worried that I would be lost since it was book two in the series… HOLY CRAP do I want more…

The premise for this book is genius and I love the twist… The story of the four horsemen has always been a source of fear for many people. Emma has found a way to humanize them and give them understanding beyond their jobs… I cannot be happier to have read this book.

The prologue for this does a great job in introducing the characters and making sure the reader can follow the story.

Nikki is a nurse who along with her BFF is kidnapped and then rescued by, Chaos, Devil, Judge, and her mate Vyper. Nikki’s life has been hard and is still dealing with the nightmares from her past.

Vyper is the bad boy womanizer of the group, that after a great loss can’t stand to be close to anyone for fear of losing them.

I loved these characters not only were they believable but they are memorable. I love a book where you enjoy the characters and the storyline far more than the sex. Now don’t get me wrong the sex was hot but the story was better. Don’t just get this copy get the first in the series Devil Takes his Innocent.

Suspense-free Zombie Apocalypse

I had a really hard time getting into this book. It took me a while to figure out what the problem was, but once I did it seemed obvious. There are certain things that I enjoy reading and thinking about that makes the post-apocalypic genre so appealing to me: men and women finding hidden skills and strenth in themselves to overcome obstacles, scrounging for supplies and making do with unusual/broken gear, the threat of being outnumbered and poorly armed, and finally being faced with a poorly understood (or completely unknown) threat and trying to learn what in the world is happening all around you. The author of this book removes all of that very early in the book, and so what we're left with is a completely suspeneless description of someone's survival shelter, a fairly dry explanation of the zombie virus' effects, and a pretty cheesy bromance novel.

Since both the main character and his friend, Gabriel, are extremely wealthy and forewarned of the outbreak, they have completely insulated themselves from its effects. They both have the time and resources to construct elaborate shelters and stock them with anything they could possibly need post-apocalypse. Also they are both extremely healthy, single and with no kids, so there are no physical threats that they really need to concern themselves with - they're never protecting anyone, or dealing with any real 'survival' issues. They also have all the weapons, food, tools and supplies to get them through the entire outbreak. Gabe even had foreknowledge of the attacks and had extensive training and expertise in fighting the undead, all of which he was able to pass on to the main character in a lengthy email.

To me, this completely removes anything that is interesting or inspiring about a PA book. I'm not saying that the author needed to include an asthmatic, wheelchair-bound blind man in an effort to gin up the suspense. That would be ridiculous as well. But what makes these stories to fascinating is seeing how ordinary people respond to extraordinary challenges. A good example of this is the family living in the high-rise apartment building in the movie "28 Days Later". The father scrounged up some riot gear from somewhere, and they've blocked the bottom of the stairwell with furniture and debris (if I remember correctly). They have buckets and glasses on the roof to collect rainwater, and use Christmas lights to illuminate their flat and to alert other survivors of their presence. All of it is so powerful when you combine it with the fact that this is a regular guy and his teenage daughter doing their best to survive.

Hopefully my critique makes sense. There are other problems with his writing: multiple grammatical mistakes, describing mundane tasks in a step-by-step matter (do I really need to hear *exactly* how he gets his supplies into his bunker?), lots of extemporizing, that could have all been cleared up with a strong editor. But even after editing this book would still have zero suspense or adventure.

When you pay $2.99 for a book on Amazon you never know what you're going to get as far as quality, especially in this genre. I have to say that this was one of the MUCH better books, if not THE best, I have read in this price range since I started buying books for Kindle. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in zombie story-telling as an example of what can be done when you pay attention to detail (particularly pertaining to grammar and spelling) and have an actual story to tell, as opposed to simply finding new ways of describing killing zombies. This is a very good and well thought out book. Buy this book, I guarantee you will like it.

It's a good/okay read

I'm an avid reader of Z-books. If it has a reasonable length and is a reasonable price, I'll buy it. "Handbooks," novels, anthologies, you name it. That said, I've developed a taste for what I enjoy most, which sometimes makes it difficult to enjoy new authors.

I give this book a 3/5 because, by and large, the book focuses primarily on the emotions, love lives, and friendships of the characters. There was a minimum of actual Z-engagements. In addition, the main character's behavior seems unbelievable to me, unless he is the most altruistic individual one could hope to meet.

I'll probably purchase and read the second book; the framework has been laid for a novel more along the lines of what I'm accustomed to.

If you're the type who likes zombies but don't care for the gore or if you're a fan of Austen-esque descriptions of characters and the like, this book is for you.
