A compelling backstory for Han Solo

Every guy who's ever seen Star Wars has wanted to be Han Solo. Now, A.C. Crispin's Han Solo Trilogy fills in the backstory, and does it well.

The Paradise Snare begins with an orphaned, outcast Solo trying to make his way as a pilot. However, he soon gets hired by a cult fronting for drug dealers. What makes the book work isn't epic battles and gun fights, but how Han's relationships and friendships develop. We get a glimpse of how Han developed an affection for Wookies and his first love interest. At times, this story almost seems like a tale straight out of Charles Dickens, but it really suits Han's character.

The Hutt Gambit is filled with first encounters, including the first time Han met Chewbacca, Lando, Boba Fett, and Jabba the Hutt, as well as several characters from the Nar Shadda moon, such as Zala and Maiko, from the Star Wars: Dark Empire Trilogy. A.C. Crispin does a good job of portraying a realistically cynical Star Wars underworld. Han still seems like Han, but it's also clear his character is growing from the The Paradise Snare.

Rebel Dawn tries to bridge the gap to the original trilogy and tie up loose ends with Han and Bria's relationship. It also explains why Chewie worried Lando still held a grudge against Han. The book works, but perhaps not quite as smoothly as the first two books. Both Zala's suggestions she and Han get married and Han's pining for Bria seem a bit out of character. I did like the intrigue with the Hutts. Crispin makes them into believable mafioso types. Xizor was also well employed.

At the least, the trilogy will give you a new respect for everybody's favorite smuggler and how far he's traveled to become respectable.

Grade 5-7–Morpurgo frames this story with a grandmother sharing her girlhood journal with her grandson and a letter explaining what she has recently done. In the main story, Lily is 12 in 1943 and lives in southern coastal England. The war brings a foreign teacher, American soldiers, evacuees from London, and the sound of warplanes to their rural area. The girl's family is forced to move from their farm to an uncle's so the army can use their land to practice sea landings. A boy evacuee moves in with them. Lily's rocks during this unsettled time are her cat, Tips, and the friendship she strikes up with a black American soldier, Adolphus, better known as Adie. Decades later, Lily sees Adie and his son on the beach. Their friendship is rekindled and, after her husband's death, she visits him in Atlanta, GA. As the story ends in the present, she tells her grandchild that she and Adie have just married and that she is bringing him home to London with her. Following a grandson's memories of riding on a motorbike with his beloved grandmother, Lily, this story goes back in time to Lily's journal entries, made during World War II in Britain, which show her as a fiercely independent person even then--as angry at her family as she is at the enemy. Lily, 12, feels guilty about quarreling with Dad before he left to fight (what if he gets killed?), but her most immediate concern is finding her beloved cat, Tips, which goes missing after the family is forced to evacuate its coastal farm to make room for the army to rehearse the invasion of Normandy. She is helped by a kind, black GI, Adolphus ("Adie"), with whom she develops a bond. The personal story of anger and love is as gripping as the war drama, and Morpurgo includes a fascinating note about the invasion rehearsal and why its history is seldom told. Hazel Rochman

Adolphus Tips

Of the many books I have purchased and read of Michael Morpurgo, this is my favorite. I only have a few reservations about giving this book to children. I purchased the book to give to the Reading Partners organization where I tutor children with reading difficulties. The reservations are because of two things: first in many of Morpurgo's books he has the main charactor using the word hate. To me, that word is nearly as bad as the F word. Also, in this story, as truly happened a great deal in years past, people drowned unwanted kittens. I hesitated to have children read about that. Never-the-less, I did give the book. I would like to hear what some of the children think of it. I like the fact that Morpurgo introduces the reader to other cultures and shows that there is or can be cross-cultural tolerance and caring. Kit T.

About the Author

G. E. Frazier, CHC, is a certified health coach and graduate of the Institute for Integrative Nutrition. He holds a BS in accounting from San Diego State University and was a tax accountant for forty-three years. Now, instead of researching tax law, he researches health and wellness. He practices in San Diego, where he lives with his loving wife, Melanie.

On November 17, 2011, Frazier was diagnosed with diabetes. However, refusing to accept that diagnosis, he discovered his true condition as “dawn phenomenon,” and cured his diabetes in nine weeks. Great information. The author tell his story discovering he was diabetic. I recomend this book to all, especially those who are diabetic. The author gives great information for not living on sythentic drugs, but using more natural approach. Great reading , very interesting, you won't want to put it down

A compelling and personal tale laced with wisdom that takes one through a process of questioning the institutional status quo as well as the practice of treating the "symptoms" of disease based on the theory that *disease causes poor health* when in reality it's the opposite, there's so much more to the picture in treating the patient as whole with the theory that *poor health causes disease* and we all don't fit into the same mold. G. E. Frazier has a remarkable ability to take complex research and distill from it what would be important and interesting for a lay audience. An immensely important book. Many health books can be dull and drone on with a spattering of useful or interesting chapters. Not so here. The entire span of this unauthorized autobiography of happiness and well being is fascinating and applicable to day-to-day life. Everyone should read The Dawn Phenomenon.

He had me from the acknowledgments! GE Frazier is a story teller! GREAT READ!! There are health books that are challenging to read, as they feel like a science textbook...as in dry and wordy. This book is entertaining, while at the same time incredibly educational and enlightening. If you are experiencing a diagnosis of diabetes, you need to read this book. If you are hoping to learn from someone else's journey so you don't have to get a diabetes diagnosis, you need to read this book. Mr. Frazier makes an excellent case for a plan that can take you from diabetes to super wellness in a lighthearted, yet profound and life-changing way.

There is no doubt that oncoplastic breast surgery experienced a r- id rise with more patients demanding this kind of surgery. However, a profound knowledge of the different oncoplastic techniques is - sential for the outcome.

The second part focuses on special operation techniques to improve the cosmetic outcome after breast conserving surgery and mastectomy using small parenchyma flaps, breast reduction techniques and pedicled or free flaps. The text highlights indications, contraindications and preoperative drawings of more than 15 different techniques.

He le�do parcialmente este libro sobre cirug�a oncopl�stica mamaria. Resume en los primeros cap�tulos la anatom�a pertinente y las opciones de tratamiento disponibles (quimioterapia, radioterapia, hormonoterapia, etc.) en la actualidad para las lesiones tumorales que pueden ser intervenidas mediante cirug�a oncopl�stica. Los cap�tulos sobre t�cnica oncopl�stica son bastante buenos y recomendables. Sin embargo probablemente el tema no sea suficiente para un libro tan extenso, y los autores han incluido cap�tulos sobre reconstrucci�n mamaria aut�loga con colgajos, que en realidad no forman parte de la tem�tica principal, y probablemente ya se encuentran bien descritos en multitud de tratados.

Recomiendo este libro a cirujanos de mama, especialmente cirujanos pl�sticos.
