Paul Starr is Professor of Sociology and Public Affairs at Princeton University and its Woodrow Wilson School of Public Affairs. Since this book was written in 1985, I have used it to teach medical students about the changes in American healthcare. The last chapter, "The Coming of the Corporation," forecasts what has happened in the last decade. This book is a must for all who want to understand why the changes are occurring in American healthcare

Why the US has a private health care system

This Pulitzer Prize winning history of American Medicine does a lot to explain why the domain of public health is so small in the U.S., and why health in the U.S. is mostly a private, as opposed to public, matter. It takes some fortitude to get through, but it should be required reading for anyone who has ever wondered why, for better and for worse, the US is the only developed country that does not have social provision of medical care. Hint: It's not an accident. Recommended

Great history of American medicine

For anyone interested in the healthcare as a profession or area of study, I can't recommend this book highly enough. Despite the 20 years since its publication, Paul Starr's Pulitzer prize winner is still relevant today and in retrospect his projections made of the future of healthcare in America are surpisingly prescient.
The first book describes the development of the medical profession in early America providing a fascinating look at the social evolution of American society. The second book delineates the rise of doctors, hospitals and medical schools in latter half of the 19th to the early 20th century with the rise of science and a professional authority. The third book shifts the focus from the doctors and to the industry that medicine became as well as the various attempts at healthcare reform in response to rising healthcare costs.
My only criticism is that Starr should have devoted more pages to the root causes behind the rising healthcare costs that drove the reforms of the 1960-70s described in the third book.

As the story progresses and Anacleto matures, he reaches out for acceptance. This turns out to be a dramatically life-altering decision. Although The Outcast Prophet of Bensonhurst begins as a quirky, ironically humorous story, as the plot unfolds and as Anacleto tentatively develops friendships, he is drawn into a series of heart-wrenching calamities and dramatically violent situations. He attempts to counsel an eccentric acquaintance who is at war with society. Later in the story, he finds himself caught up in the turmoil caused by the dark family secret of his best, and only friend. Anacleto experiences the ecstasy of first love and plunges headlong into a series of rapturously heady sexual encounters. At the same time, he wrestles with his own family problems and with questions having to do with religious belief, free speech, and the war in Vietnam (two of his older brothers serve in the armed forces, one of whom returns home badly scarred, physically and emotionally). And then, there’s the gun...the one that is lost and which leads to so much misfortune. The powerful and ironic climax of The Outcast Prophet of Bensonhurst leaves all of the main characters damaged. It will leave you breathless.

The Outcast Prophet of Bensonhurst

If you like quirky characters, realistic dialogues, carefully construed plots and unexpected endings, this might be the book for you. Marco Manfrey, its author, provides a five star characterization of his protagonist, Anacleto, a speech impaired individual with academic promise, who faces the urban challenges of being raised by a single parent. The Brooklyn neighborhood in which Anacleto is reared proves to jeopardize his core with available drugs, a growing plethora of low life individuals and an unfortunate lack of meaningful relationships.
"Coming of age" issues like social detachment, peer acceptance, and sexual experimentation are interwoven beautifully into this carefully built plot. All the while, the young protagonist searches endlessly to define his own identity in the chaotic and "out of control" world about him.
This is a "must" reading for individuals particularly empathetic with those that "dare to be different!" You won't be disappointed!

Choices and consequences

Marco Manfre has created an unlikely protagonist in Anacleto "Clete" Roosevelt. Good-hearted, perceptive, and unassuming, Clete is the kind of young man that everyone else counts on, and most of the characters in this novel desperately need someone like him. Clete's troubled friend Santo, his radical classmate Rudy, and Anne, Clete's on-again off-again girlfriend, are only a few of the unforgettable characters who cross Clete's path. The multiple subplots involving Clete's friends and family tie up well in the last few pages in a realistic and not especially happy ending, as Clete admits "I made choices long ago and now I have to live with their consequences."

Held my attention beginning to end!

Could not put this book down once I started as this was the type of character I sometimes like to read, only this one was written so well, that you are actually drawn into his sympathetic, sad world of his scared, shy personality that envelopes his life as an outcast and loner. As he meets and is engaged by three others thru his teen years, also outcasts in their own rights, his life changes for better and worse. I felt so bad for this kid, Anacleto, and wanted him to prevail and live happily ever after. but as his experiences continue to tug at your heart, and he always tries to do the right thing, you feel like he is always caught in someone else mess and can't get out. Nonetheless, don't want to give story away, as you will feel and fall in love with this teen and his circumstances of his life. Definitely give this book a read as you won't want to put down either!

Mamrie Hart steals my heart (again)

This is my new favorite memoir. Mamrie Hart has a unique voice and although I am biased as a fan of everything she does, this book is one for the books. I've read memoirs from other comedians such as Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Rachel Dratch, and Kathy Griffin and they are all secondary to the candid, comedy of Mamrie Hart. She weaves sincerity with crass humor so fluidly that I see my own adventures reflected in each part of her story, no matter how different they actually are. Hart's insight in her own life inspires me to trust myself and to allow myself to rely on friends. Well done, Mamrie.

I have loved Mamrie Hart for a long time

Full disclosure, I have loved Mamrie Hart for a long time, this love of her online content should have influenced my love of this book but I assure you it did not. I'm a book snob. I love to read, and frankly when Mamrie "I don't even read" Hart announced she was writing a book I knew I would buy it but I couldn't be a sure I would like it. I was right. I didn't like this book. I loved it. From her love of Boy Meets World (a love I share and feel a deep emotional connection to) to her crazy nights with friends whom you can tell she treasures this book is all heart...or should I say Hart. You will find yourself unable to read as you recover from this books side splitting laughs, and moments when you just have to take a moment to shake your head in disbelief as Mamrie regales you with her boozy misadventures. This book was unexpected endearing, righteously funny and will definitely be recommended to all of my friends....but probably not my mother. Rutabaga!

Do yourself a favor and get to know MAMRIE!

Mamrie is sold f***ing gold. You can rely on her to make any video, sketch, interview and now book better.for example, I remember discovering Joan Rivers had a new YouTube interview series and I started binge watching them. Some of them were funny, but most of them were awkward and cringeworthy, mainly because most of the guests (some of whom were comedians) had no idea how to handle the great Joan Rivers. Mamries interview with Joan was the best. It was so cool watching a comedy great fall in love with her just as I had while discovering her through grace helbigs channel. After reading her book I love her even more. Her writing is effortlessly funny and her anecdotes give me confidence and joy. I would say this book reminded me of similar books by Tina fey, Amy Poehler, and Mindy Kaling but I honestly loved it so much more because even though she's becoming more popular and successful every SECOND, I feel like Mamrie is still my little secret.
