'Donna Ladkin gives us an entirely novel and creative approach to thinking about, and importantly, doing and teaching ethics. The book is practice-based in the best sense of the word, using meditation and other attention techniques to enhance awareness, inquiry, and ultimately ethical insight at the personal and organizational levels. It is accessible to students at all levels of learning, with exercises that will generate personal insights. At the same time, it is grounded in a wide range of sources, both philosophical and managerial, that enhance the credibility of its approach. This book will enhance the ethics and the lives of people who read it and practice its approaches.'
- Sandra Waddock, Boston College Carroll School of Management, US

'This book guides students and practitioners through the building blocks of ethical practice. It provides readers with an opportunity to reflect on their beliefs and develop skills they need to competently resolve the thorny ethical problems of organizational life. Ladkin grounds her discussion in virtue ethics and the ethics of care but never lets the philosophic theories weigh it down. The book offers an intellectually sound, friendly, and helpful take on the practice of organizational ethics.'
- Joanne B. Ciulla, University of Richmond, US

With the use of exercises, reflective prompts and case studies, Mastering the Ethical Dimension of Organizations offers a practice-based approach to developing the skills critical to responding ethically to organizational dilemmas.

Starting from the premise that ethical issues within organizations rarely come 'packaged', this book encourages an understanding of ethics beyond organizational compliance systems or codes of conduct. Instead, it argues that our ability to respond ethically requires ethical perception, moral imagination and discernment akin to aesthetic judgement; capabilities it fosters through a clear, programmed approach.

Engagingly and accessibly written by a leading communicator in the field, this book will be essential for postgraduate students of business, management or leadership. Human resource management professionals, corporate responsibility managers and those in other organizational roles will also find this to be an insightful resource.

No Foolin': A Willowdale Romance, by Lisa Scott

Welcome to Willowdale, North Carolina, a small town where the folks are friendly, the romances are as sweet as the tea, and the biddies at the diner gobble up gossip like it's peach cobbler. This may be their biggest scoop ever.

When sexy Hollywood bad-boy Teague “T-Rex” Reynolds comes to this quiet Southern town, he needs a fake girlfriend to hide the secret that brought him there. School nurse Kate Riley takes the job, but she won't fall for a movie star, no ma'am. That's fine with Teague. He hung a closed sign on his heart years ago.

Convincing the press they're in love is one thing. Fooling each other they're not is getting harder each day. Despite scandal, heartache, and misunderstandings galore, they might just find the sweet thrill of true love. Book one of The Willowdale Romances.

Perfect vacation read!
By Bookatrix
If you're the kind of person who has a hectic, stressful life and you just want a few minutes of peace, a few minutes to feel like you've been on vacation - read this. It's a cute, romantic-without-being-stupid account of two people who meet, and despite their misgivings, fall in love. There are enough twists and turns to keep you turning the pages, but not so many that the very thought of keeping up with the characters tires you out. Highly recommended for chick-lit and/or contemporary romance fans!

Overall, a pretty good book
By Harlequin Junkie Blog
No Foolin' by Lisa Scott: I'm in the middle of the road on this one. I really enjoyed the book but there were a couple of things about it that REALLY bothered me. Let me see if I can figure this out...

Ok, so I liked the heroine, Kate, well enough. She's in a small town in North Carolina, just trying to keep things together. Her mom died and she's left with her no-so-helpful stepdad and her hormonal stepsister, Dina. Dina is hormonal because she's pregnant but won't tell anyone who the father is. Drama Mama!! Although when we first see Kate and Dina together, they don't look like they get along but as the book progresses, I really liked how they are together. Anyway, the reason I liked Kate is one of the reasons that I liked the relationship between Kate and Dina: everybody depends on Kate without knowing that they depend on Kate. Kate's trying to keep the household afloat and keep them from losing the house altogether and she's doing everything she can to help their family, not just with money but also with moral support, especially for Dina. She has a lot on her shoulders and pretty much asked for none of it. So I really felt for her. Then, when things aren't looking so good, something... someone comes along and throws a monkeywrench into all of it!

That monkeywrench is named Teague. He's an up and coming movie star who is about to hit the big time. But he has this little tiny secret that could possibly end his whole career. That secret is the reason for Teague's visit to Kate's hometown. But when he's spotted by some paparazzi, he has to ask Kate to rescue him. One thing leads to another and they are both caught in a lie that's grown to gargantuan size! It's actually pretty funny! But, as you may have guessed, Teague is not your typical, shallow movie star. He has some personal issues to say the least. It seems to all come from the fact that he was given up for adoption when he was 2 years old. He feels like his mom and dad just sort of threw him away and he's never let anyone close since then. I thought Teague's train of thought was a little wonky but when someone has issues that go back to childhood, there's usually no point in trying to make sense of them. Either way, Teague is known as a love 'em and leave 'em guy and he's just fine with that image, even if he DOES wish for more.

I think Kate and Teague are perfectly matched, especially since they BOTH believe that they are not destined to fall in love. Teague thinks that it's because he won't let anyone get close (which is true) and Kate thinks it's because it's just not in the cards for her. It was a lot of fun to watch each of them fight against the attraction they have for each other. Later, it was even better to see them denying that they were falling for each other. This book is ALL about denial!! LOL! Oh! One other thing: there's this side story of Dina and her baby's daddy that was cute and fun. I loved seeing them together and it was one of the things I really liked about this book.

But I did have a couple of problems with this book. First, is the stepdad The way he neglects his daughters (Kate and Dina) is practically criminal and I pretty much hated him from the beginning. I hated him even more as the story went on. My second (and last) issue was the hokey-ness of the whole book. I get that it's called "No Foolin'" and that the author dropped the "g" on foolin for a reason. But seriously? People in the south don't REALLY talk like that, with the Aw Shucks and Gee Whiz and constantly dropping the "g"s. Plus, the local eateries are called the Jelly Jar diner and the Kissin' Cousins diner? You have GOT to be kidding me. I'm sure that somewhere in the sticks, there's restaurants with ignorant names like that but do we really need to put that in print? I mean, it felt more like perpetuating a stereotype than anything else and that drives me nuts.

Overall, this was a pretty good book. I liked it! Small town southern girl goes to Hollywood on the arm of a big Hollywood star? Heck yeah! Lots of secrets and lies, where even the secrets have secrets!! You'll get some laughs and maybe a couple of tears but you'll certainly have some fun. I think anyone who likes contemporary romance will like this one

Great new series from Lisa Scott
By Elaine's Picks
I love series books. It's nice to visit a town where you get to know all the characters who live there. Lisa has provided us with a great little town and warm and wonderful characters as well. The story is heart-warming. Lisa has a way of making me smile and wish the story kept on going. I have loved her "Flirts" series and I look forward to the rest of the stories from the town of Willowdale. If you like good romance you'll love this one.

This second edition has been revised and updated to include additional illustrations and two new chapters that examine improved street-tree planting techniques and the mechanisms for planning for trees in urban environments. The author questions Olmsted's well-known concept of bringing nature into the city, focusing instead on improving on nature through artful garden design. Throughout, the book's approach is to define the problem, establish the philosophical design basis, apply the design principle, and implement the planning and design.

From the Inside Flap
Trees in Urban Design Second Edition By Henry F. Arnold Reflecting the belief that urban life requires an "escape," city parks have long been designed in imitation of pastoral surroundings. Henry F. Arnold challenges this tired romantic style that disregards the urban environment—and shows how trees can be used to enhance urban elements rather than hide them. He encourages landscape architects and city planners to utilize trees, not as decoration, but as living building materials to create and reinforce urban spaces. The revised Second Edition adds practical value to the work, answering many of the questions that were raised as a result of the original volume. Trees in Urban Design, Second Edition, concentrates two new chapters on the more utilitarian issues of urban tree planting. Chapter Six deals substantively with the significant changes in urban tree-planting techniques that have evolved since the original edition was printed. Chapter Seven deals with the revolution in urban forestry that has taken place during this same period, the economics of urban tree planting, and the essential government role in this immensely important work. In this way, the book has become more instructive and, therefore, more useful as a source of information. After a brief historical sketch of urban tree use, Arnold takes a broad look at American cities and establishes a fresh design approach based on classical principles. In contrast to the scattered use of trees, he advocates the collective use of trees in groves, rows, and symmetrical units, and explains aesthetic principles used in grouping trees in a variety of settings. To emphasize the most important design considerations in choosing a type of tree, the branch structures of prototypical trees not in leaf are displayed in over 200 drawings and photographs. The same examples are repeated in a variety of contexts to demonstrate the effect of different design principles. The book explains why the science of plant ecology is of limited value in formulating rules for planting trees in cities. It clarifies the need to reevaluate the claims made for ecology in an urban context. Obstacles to effective tree plantings — such as municipal policies — are discussed, along with ways to change these obstacles into opportunities for better urban design and increased tree plantings. The book also suggests a realistic method of budgeting for tree planting and maintenance. Trees in Urban Design, Second Edition, provides bold, practical solutions to important problems of economics, planning, and maintenance of urban planting, and offers effective programs to raise urban tree management to its essential place in the urban megastructure. Reinforcing the view of the city as the nucleus of human culture, this "ground-breaking" book is essential reading for architects and city planners.

Essential reading for landscape architects and designers
By jacoblindsey
As a practicing urban designer, I reference this book on a weekly basis. It provides a clear and concise understanding of how trees perform in urban conditions, from conceptual use in spatial definition to planting details. Many of Arnold's ideas were revelations to me, even after five years of training in landscape architecture. Unfortunately, the volume is somewhat dated, especially in its notes on current cultivar disease resistance. Still, highly recommended.

This book was a revelation to me back in the '80s and has greatly influenced the advice I give to clients and what I teach my students.
It is a 'must-read'for all those responsible for planting trees and designing outdoor spaces in urban areas.

This is the story I grew up on. However the monster scares my son so we can't read it anymore.

Not as great as I thought...
By Amazon Customer
I prefer the song than this particular story... I forgot this version of Rudolph. Anyway, the book is about right for the price. It's too long for a 2 yr old. The extra characters (the little "odd" elf and the snow monster) are quite boring and silly side-kicks. If you loved this version of the story/movie you'll find this a great buy.

True to the movie, but nice and easy for Preschoolers.
By Barbara Millet
My 4 year old watched the classic Rudolph movie, and immediately wanted a book of the movie that we could read together. I am glad it was available through Amazon. She enjoyed it immensely. There wasn't an overload of words which could lose most preschoolers, and the story is true to the movie. It's a cliff-note version of course, but your little Rudolph fan will enjoy it all the same.

A book about tools that fills a need in scientific computing
By Jason Wirth
Python For Data Analysis is a book about tools. Python is an excellent general purpose language that has developed some niche applications, science being one of them due to some excellent libraries such as NumPy, SciPy, IPython, Matplotlib, and increasingly Pandas -- which Wes created. Collectively these tools form the basis of the "scientific computing stack" and are utilized by anyone who gets their hands dirty with data.

To steal from the book, Wes states, "This book is concerned with the nuts and bolts of manipulating, processing, cleaning, and crunching data in Python. It is also a practical introduction to scientific computing in Python, tailored for data-intensive applications. This is a book about the parts of the Python language and libraries you'll need to effectively solve a broad set of data analysis problems. This book is NOT (author's emphasis) an exposition on analytical methods using Python as the implementation language."

This is a book for any level of professional, researcher, or academic working with data. You could be a beginner who wants to get started, a professional coming from discipline rooted in another language like Matlab, or even someone seasoned in data-manipulation with Python who wants to get more work done in less time with greater ease.

While Pandas is the main focus of the book, sections dedicated to IPython (a shell for interactive execution) and NumPy (Matlab-like vectorized arrays) means there is something for everyone. For example, you might already use IPython, but not to its fullest potential. Wes shows how to be more efficient using the interactive debugger.

Amazon limits their ratings to 5-stars, but if I gave a star for every time I learned something new that made my analysis easier this book would be off the charts!

dive into pandas and NumPy
By R. Friesel Jr.
Wes McKinney's "Python for Data Analysis" (O'Reilly, 2012) is a tour pandas and NumPy (mostly pandas) for folks looking to crunch "big-ish" data with Python. The target audience is not Pythonistas, but rather scientists, educators, statisticians, financial analysts, and the rest of the "non-programmer" cohort that is finding more and more these days that it needs to do a little bit-sifting to get the rest of their jobs done.

First, two warnings:

1. **This book is not an introduction to Python.** While McKinney does not assume that you know *any* Python, he isn't exactly going to hold your hand on the language here. There is an appendix ("Python Language Essentials") that beginners will want to read before getting too far, but otherwise you're on your own. ("Lucky for you Python is executable pseudocode"?)

2. **This book is not about theories of data analysis.** What I mean by that is: if you're looking for a book that is going to tell you the *types* of analyses to do, this is not that book. McKinney assumes that you already know, through your "actual" training, what kinds of analyses you need to perform on your data, and how to go about the computations necessary for those analyses.

That being said: McKinney is the principal author on pandas, a Python package for doing data transformation and statistical analysis. The book is largely about pandas (and NumPy), offering overviews of the utilities in these packages, and concrete examples on how to employ them to great effect. In examining these libraries, McKinney also delves into general methodologies for munging data and performing analytical operations on them (e.g., normalizing messy data and turning it into graphs and tables). McKinney also delves into some (semi) esoteric information about how Python works at very low levels and ways to optimize data structures so that you can get maximum performance from your programs. McKinney is clearly knowledgeable about these libraries, about Python, and about using those tools effectively in analytical software.

So where do I land on "Python for Data Analysis"? If you're looking for a book that discusses data analysis in a broad sense, or one that pays special attention to the theory, this isn't that book. If you're looking for a generalist's book on Python--also not this book. However, if you've already selected Python as your analytical tool (and it sounds like it's more/less the de facto analytical tool in many circles) then this just might be the perfect book for you.

A tutorial in need of editorial work; not comprehensive; not a useful reference
By Richard C. Yeh
I think this book is genuinely trying to be helpful, by giving an extended tutorial on the pandas library; but the tutorial covers only selected topics, and needs to be supplemented with a comprehensive function reference. The narrative also needs to be cut with the help of a strict editor.

If you are trying to decide whether to learn to use the pandas library, this book is for you. It starts with an example of how python and the pandas library can make it easy to do some basic analyses of data, and then develops more specialized chapters: summary statistics, data storage, data transformation (merging and joining), plotting, aggregation, time-series, special considerations for financial or economic data, advanced special topics.

Once I decided to use the pandas library, the book suddenly became less useful. The author has a verbose pedagogical style, and the book never departs from its tutorial perspective. Functions are introduced with examples but no definitions, and it's hard to find the rare summaries of functions, function arguments, or discussion suggesting when to use one method instead of another.

If you want to do something very close to what's done in an example, it's easy to follow along. Once you want to do something not emphasized or covered by an example, there is no guidance, no reference or dictionary section to give any hint about where I might search next --- google will probably direct you to stackoverflow.com, or the official pandas documentation site.

For example, suppose you have loaded your data into a DataFrame, and you want to use another column as the index. The book has several pages on the useful reindex() method, but that method is for resampling the data. Instead, you want set_index() --- but the book only mentions set_index() in passing, without saying what it does, far from the section where the DataFrame index is covered.

There have been some attempts to remedy this, with "quick reference cards" for pandas --- but they are in general also not comprehensive.

Finally, there is little guidance on the kinds of problems where you would be better served using numpy or some other tool instead of pandas. (There are a few paragraphs on areas where you might not want to use python.)

[Update: by mid 2013, the API reference at the official pandas documentation has the comprehensive listings that I was looking for --- see http pandas.pydata.org pandas-docs stable api.html . By version 0.12.0, all of the various function arguments seem to have been described with examples of acceptable settings. Also, the data analytical work (as opposed to cleaning and organization) has moved to the related statsmodels project, which requires pandas. So, to use that, it's important to be familiar with pandas.]

To the editor:

On many pages, there is some comment, phrasing, or trivial fact that I would have eliminated. Example:

"In some cases, a table might not have a fixed delimiter, using whitespace or some other pattern to separate fields. In these cases, ..."

"In part for legacy reasons (much earlier versions of pandas), DataFrame's join method ..."

"In my experience, having to align data by hand (and worse, having to verify that data is aligned) is a far too rigid and tedious way to work. It is also rife with potential for bugs due to combining misaligned data."

This is a technical publication, not a narrative!

Many of the code examples break across physical and PDF pages, which create small interruptions when reading. This may be hard to avoid when about half the text space is occupied by worked examples.

Hit Makers: The Science of Popularity in an Age of Distraction, by Derek Thompson

“This bookpicks up where The Tipping Point left off."--Adam Grant, Wharton professor and New York Times bestselling author of ORIGINALS and GIVE AND TAKE

Nothing “goes viral.”If you think a popular movie, song, or app came out of nowhere to become a word-of-mouth success in today’s crowded media environment, you’re missing the real story. Each blockbuster has a secret history—of power, influence, dark broadcasters, and passionate cults that turn some new products into cultural phenomena. Even the most brilliant ideas wither in obscurity if theyfail to connect with the right network, andthe consumers that matter most aren't the early adopters, but rather their friends, followers, and imitators -- the audience of your audience.

In his groundbreaking investigation,Atlanticsenior editor Derek Thompson uncovers the hidden psychology of why we like what we like and reveals the economics of cultural markets that invisibly shape our lives. Shattering the sentimental myths of hit-making that dominate pop culture and business, Thompson shows quality is insufficient for success, nobody has "good taste,"and some of the most popular products in history were one bad break away from utter failure. It may be a new world, but there are some enduring truths to what audiences and consumers want. People love a familiar surprise: a product that is bold, yet sneakily recognizable.

Every business, every artist, every person looking to promote themselves andtheir workwants to know what makessome works so successful while others disappear.Hit Makersis a magical mystery tour through the last century of pop culture blockbusters and the most valuable currency of the twenty-first century—people’s attention.

From the dawn of impressionist art to the future of Facebook, from small Etsy designers to the origin of Star Wars, Derek Thompson leaves no pet rock unturned to tell the fascinating story of how culture happens and why things become popular.

In Hit Makers, Derek Thompson investigates:
The secret link between ESPN's sticky programming and the The Weeknd's catchy choruses
WhyFacebookis the world’s most important modern newspaper
 How advertising critics predictedDonald Trump
The 5th grader who accidentally launched"Rock Around the Clock,"the biggest hit in rock and roll history
How Barack Obama and his speechwriters think of themselves as songwriters
How Disney conquered the world—but the future of hits belongs to savvy amateurs and individuals
The French collector who accidentally created the Impressionist canon
Quantitative evidence that thebiggest music hits aren’t always the best
Why almost all Hollywood blockbusters are sequels, reboots, and adaptations
Why one year--1991--is responsible for the way pop music sounds today
Why another year --1932--created the business model of film
How data scientists proved that “going viral” is a myth
How 19th century immigration patterns explain the most heard song in the Western Hemisphere

The Power of Exposure

Fame and Familiarity—in Art, Music, Politics

On a rainy morning one fall, I was walking alone through the impressionist exhibit of the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. Standing before a wall of renowned paintings, I was struck by a question that I imagine many people wonder quietly in a museum, even if it’s rude to say out loud in a company of strangers: Why is this thing so famous?

It was The Japanese Footbridge by Claude Monet, with the blue bridge arching over an emerald green pond that is gilded with patches of yellow, pink, and green—the iconic water lilies. It was impossible not to recognize. One of my favorite picture books as a kid included several of Monet’s water lily paintings. It was also impossible to ignore, on account of several kids scrambling through the geriatric crowd to get a closer look. “Yes!” a teenage girl said, holding up her phone in front of her face to take a picture. “Oh!” exclaimed the taller, curly-haired boy behind her. “It’s that famous one!” Several more high school students heard their shouts, and within seconds a group had clustered around the Monet.

Several rooms away, the gallery held a special exhibit for another impressionist painter, Gustave Caillebotte. This was a quieter, slower affair. There were no students and no ecstatic exclamations of recognition, just a lot of mmm-hmms and solemn nods. Caillebotte is not world famous like Monet, Manet, or Czanne. The sign outside his exhibitionat the National Gallery called him “perhaps the least known of the French impressionists.”

But Caillebotte’s paintings are exquisite. His style is impressionist yet exacting, as if captured with a slightly more focused camera lens. Often from a window’s view, he rendered the colorful urban geometry of nineteenth-century Paris—the yellow rhomboid blocks, the pale white sidewalks, and the iridescent grays of rain-slicked boulevards. His contemporaries considered him a phenomenon on par with Monet and Renoir. mile Zola, the great French writer who drew attention to impressionism’s “delicate patches of color,” pronounced Caillebotte “one of the boldest of the group.” Still, 140 years later, Monet is one of the most famous painters in history, while Caillebotte is relatively anonymous.

A mystery: Two rebellious painters hang their art in the same impressionist exhibit in 1876. They are considered of similar talent and promise. But one painter’s water lilies become a global cultural hit—enshrined in picture books, studied by art historians, gawked at by high school students, and highlighted in every tour of the National Gallery of Art—and the other painter is little known among casual art fans. Why?

For many centuries, philosophers, artists, and psychologists have studied modern art to learn the truth about beauty and popularity. For understandable reasons, many focused on the paintings themselves. But studying the patches of Monet and the brushstrokes of Caillebotte won’t tell you why one is famous and the other is not. You have to see the deeper story. Famous paintings, hit songs, and blockbusters that seem to float effortlessly on the cultural consciousness have a hidden genesis; even water lilies have roots.

When a team of researchers at Cornell University studied the story of the impressionist canon, they found that something surprising set the most famous painters apart. It wasn’t their social connections or their nineteenth-century renown. It was a subtler story. And it all started with Caillebotte.

Gustave Caillebotte was born to a wealthy Parisian family in 1848. As a young man, he veered from law to engineering to the French army in the Franco-Prussian War. But in his twenties, he discovered a passion and immense talent for painting.

In 1875, he submitted The Floor Scrapers to the Academy of Fine Arts in Paris. In the painting, white light coming through a window illuminates the bare white backs of several men working on their knees, scraping the dark brown floor of an empty room, as the skinned wood curls into spirals beside their legs. But the painting was rejected. One critic later summed up the scornful response when he said, “Do nudes, but do beautiful nudes or don’t do them at all.”

The impressionists—or, as Caillebotte also called them, les Intransigents—disagreed. Several of them, including Auguste Renoir, liked his quotidian take on the floor scrapers and asked Caillebotte to exhibit with their fellow rebels. He became friends with some of the era’s most controversial young artists, like Monet and Degas, buying dozens of their works at a time when few rich European men cared for them.

Caillebotte’s self-portraits show him in middle age with short hair and a face like an arrowhead, angular and sharpened to a point, with an austere gray beard. A grave countenance colored his inner life as well. Convinced that he would die young, Caillebotte wrote a will instructing the French state to accept his art collection and hang nearly seventy of his impressionist paintings in a national museum.

His fears were prescient. Caillebotte died of a stroke in 1894 at the age of forty-five. His bequest included at least sixteen canvases by Monet, eight by Renoir, eight by Degas, five by Czanne, and four by Manet, along with eighteen by Pissarro and nine by Sisley. It is not inconceivable that his walls would be valued at several billion dollars in a twenty-first-century Christie’s sale.

But at the time, his collection was far less coveted. In the will, Caillebotte had stipulated that all paintings hang at the Muse du Luxembourg in Paris. But even with Renoir serving as executor, the French government initially refused to accept the artworks.

The French elite, including conservative critics and even prominent politicians, considered the bequest presumptuous, if not downright ludicrous. Who was this scoundrel to think he could posthumously force the French government to hang dozens of blotchy atrocities on its own walls? Several art professors threatened to resign from the cole des Beaux-Arts if the state accepted the impressionist paintings. Jean-Lon Grme, one of the most famous academic artists of his time, blasted the donation, saying, “For the government to accept such filth, there would have to be a great moral slackening.”

But what is the history of art if not one great slackening after another? After years of fighting both the French state and Caillebotte’s own family to honor the bequest, Renoir persuaded the government to accept about half the collection. By one count, the accepted paintings included eight works by Monet, seven by Degas, seven by Pissarro, six by Renoir, six by Sisley, two by Manet, and two by Cezanne.

When the artworks were finally hung in 1897, at a new wing in the Muse du Luxembourg, it represented the first ever national exhibition of impressionist art in France, or any European country. The public flooded the museum to see art they’d previously savaged or simply ignored. The long battle over Caillebotte’s estate (the press called it l’affaire Caillebotte) had the very effect he must have hoped: It brought unprecedented attention, and even a bit of respect, to his intransigents friends.

One century after the exhibition of the caillebotte collection, James Cutting, a psychologist at Cornell University, counted more than fifteen thousand instances of impressionist paintings to appear in hundreds of books in the university library. He concluded “unequivocally” that there were seven (“and only seven”) core impressionist painters, whose names and works appeared far more often than their peers. This core consisted of Monet, Renoir, Degas, Cezanne, Manet, Pissarro, and Sisley. Without a doubt, this was the impressionist canon.

What set these seven painters apart? They didn’t share a common style. They did not receive unique praise from contemporary critics, nor did they suffer equal censure. There is no record that this group socialized exclusively, collected each other’s works exclusively, or exhibited exclusively. In fact, there would seem to be only one exclusive quality the most famous impressionists shared.

The core seven impressionist painters were the only seven impressionists in Gustave Caillebotte’s bequest.

Exactly one hundred years after Caillebotte’s death, in 1994, James Cutting stood before one of the most famous paintings at the Muse d’Orsay in Paris and had a familiar thought: Why is this thing so famous?

The painting in question was Renoir’s Bal du Moulin de la Galette. Standing about four feet high and six feet wide, the artwork shows scores of well-dressed Parisians clustered in an outdoor dance hall, waltzing, drinking, and huddling around tables in the dappled light of a Sunday afternoon in the Montmartre district of Paris.

Cutting instantly recognized the work. But he wondered what was so inherently special about the painting, apart from the fact that he recognized it. Yes, the Bal du Moulin is absorbing, he granted, but the artwork was not obviously better than its less celebrated peers in adjacent rooms.

“I really had an aha moment,” Cutting told me. “I realized that Caillebotte had owned not only the Bal du Moulin, but also many other paintings at the museum that had become extremely famous.”

He returned to Ithaca to flesh out his eureka. Cutting and a research assistant went through about one thousand books of impressionist art in the Cornell University library to make a list of the most commonly reproduced artists. He concluded that the impressionist canon focuses on a tight cluster of seven core painters: Manet, Monet, Czanne, Degas, Renoir, Pissarro, and Sisley—the Caillebotte Seven.

Cutting had a theory: Gustave Caillebotte’s death helped to create the impressionist canon. His bequest to the French state created the frame through which contemporary and future art fans viewed impressionism. Art historians focused on the Caillebotte Seven, which bestowed prestige on their works, to the exclusion of others. The paintings of the Caillebotte Seven hung more prominently in galleries, sold for greater sums of money to private collectors, were valued more by art connoisseurs, were printed in more art anthologies, and were dissected by more art history students, who grew into the next generation’s art mavens, eager to pass on the Caillebotte Seven’s inherited fame.

Cutting had another theory: The fact that Caillebotte’s bequest shaped the impressionist canon spoke to something deep and universal about media, entertainment, and popularity. People prefer paintings that they’ve seen before. Audiences like art that gives them the jolt of meaning that often comes from an inkling of recognition.

Back at Cornell, Cutting tested this theory. He gathered 166 people from his psychology class and presented them with paired works of impressionist art. In each pair, one of the paintings was significantly more “famous”—that is, more likely to appear in one of Cornell University’s textbooks. Six times out of ten, students said they preferred the more famous picture.

This could have meant that famous paintings are better. Or it might have meant that Cornell students preferred canonical artworks because they were familiar with those paintings. To prove the latter, Cutting had to engineer an environment where students were unwittingly but repeatedly exposed to less famous paintings the same way that art audiences are unwittingly but repeatedly exposed to the impressionist canon from a young age.

What came next was quite clever: In a separate psychology class, Cutting bombarded students with obscure artworks from the late nineteenth century. The students in this second class saw a nonfamous impressionist painting four times for every one time they glimpsed a famous artwork. This was Cutting’s attempt to reconstruct a parallel universe of art history, where Caillebotte never died prematurely, where his legendary bequest never created an impressionist wing, and where the Caillebotte Seven never benefited from a random historical accident that elevated their exposure and popularity.

At the end of the second course, Cutting asked the 151 students to choose their favorite paintings among fifty-one pairs. The results of the popularity contest turned the canon upside down. In forty-one of fifty-one pairs, the students’ preference for the most famous impressionist works disappeared. The emerald magnetism of Monet’s gardens, the electric polychrome of Renoir, and the genius of Manet were nearly nullified by something else—the power of repeated exposure.

It’s extraordinary that Caillebotte’s bequest helped to shape thecanon of impressionism because he purposefully bought his friends’ least popular paintings. Caillebotte made it a principle to buy “especially those works of his friends which seemed particularly unsaleable,” the art historian John Rewald wrote. For example, Caillebotte served as a buyer of last resort when he purchased Renoir’sBal du Moulin de la Galette. Today, the painting that Caillebotte rescued from obscurity and that inspired Cutting’s famous study of art psychology is considered a masterpiece. When it sold at auction for$78 million in 1990, it was the second most expensive artwork ever purchased. You may find Renoir’s painting to be inherently beautiful—I do—but its canonical fame is inseparable from its absurd good fortune to be among the Caillebotte collection.

Mary Morton, the curator of French paintings at the National Gallery of Art, organized the museum’s 2015 Caillebotte exhibit. She told me that a lack of exposure might account for Caillebotte’s anonymity for another reason: Impressionism’s most important collector didn’t try to sell his art.

One of the most important behind-the-scenes figures in impressionist history is Paul Durand-Ruel, a French collector and dealer who served as a one-man clearinghouse for impressionist paintings before they became world famous. His exhaustive efforts to sell work by Monet and others created and sustained the movement while the French salons and European aristocracy considered their patched style a heinous affront to French romanticism. Durand-Ruel found more success among American collectors. “As the industrial revolution and income growth cranked up, newly wealthy people inhabited big new apartments in Paris and New York City,” Morton told me. “They needed decoration that was affordable, beautiful, and widely available, and impressionist paintings were all three.” New wealth created the space for new tastes. Impressionism filled the void.

But Caillebotte does not fit into this story of impressionism’s popularity among the nouveau riche. He was a millionaire, as the heir to a large fortune in textiles, and he had no need to make money from a painting hobby. There are more than 2,500 paintings, drawings, and pastels attributed to Monet. Despite his severe arthritis, Renoir produced an astonishing 4,000 works. Caillebotte produced about 400 paintings and made little effort to distribute them to collectors or museums. He faded into obscurity in the early twentieth century while his peers hung in crowded galleries and private collections, as the echoing power of Caillebotte’s gift rolled through history.

When today’s high school students recognize Monet’s water lilies, they’re seeing more than a century’s worth of exposure and fame.Caillebotte is the least known of the French impressionists. But it’s not because he’s the worst. It’s because he offered his friends a gift that he was willing to withhold from himself: the gift of exposure.

An Extraordinary and Interesting Analysis of Popularity
By Lance B Hackett
I read for enjoyment and to learn. Hit Makers satisfied both of these. It is a fascinating examination and analysis of why some works of art, songs, movies or other elements of culture catch on and others do not. Is the Mona Lisa the most famous painting in the world because it is the best? How does one even determine “the best” when subjective judgment is the root of determination?

Mr. Thompson’s book is well-written and engaging from beginning to end. His versatility with his subject in both breadth and depth is astonishing, as he discusses topics from lullabies of Brahms to the songs of Adele and Taylor Swift and from the art of Monet to the movies of George Lucas. There is even a section on the rise and fall of the “laugh track” in television comedy. He also considers the economics of art and how it is undergoing massive disintermediation and restructuring. Former gatekeepers such as TV networks, newspapers, bookstores, museums, and record publishers have been circumvented as new means of reaching audiences evolve. He examines how Fifty Shades of Grey and Pokmon became cultural phenomenon. It is clear that luck plays a role, but there is also far more to finding an audience than to getting a lucky break. There are patterns to some forms of art that attract an audience. One is abbreviated MAYA – Most Advanced Yet Acceptable. He also dispels the myth of “going viral”, as few successes can attribute their popularity strictly to word of mouth contagion.

The book has scores of interesting stories about popular culture. I particularly enjoyed the story of how Rock Around the Clock became a hit song after failing in its initial release, and the rhetorical flourishes that speechwriters use to capture an audience's interest.

This is truly an important book for our times. Each day we attempt to sip from a firehose of information and entertainment arriving on our TVs, computers and smart phones. Trying to discern what is worth our time and what to ignore is a challenge we all face. I felt more enlightened after reading Hit Makers. I do suggest you read the book on a Kindle, as I was frequently checking the definition of words.

My one minor quibble is I would have liked a final chapter to summarize the various ideas covered in the earlier chapters. The book is so rich in content, it would have benefited from an encapsulation of the different reasons for popularity.

Good info, though a somewhat disjointed presentation
By mrthinkndrink
Interesting read and it certainly had some insights. Worth the effort for anyone marketing/selling products that need to stand out in a world of competitive and similar items, i.e., books, music, movies, etc. Could have benefited from tighter editing; the book tends to ramble a bit, never seems to present a definitive approach to maximizing one's chances of having a hit. Granted, it's a soft and squishy target but the author would have done well to bring his discoveries together into a "best practices approach" to maximizing the chances of success.

Well-written book full of stories and insights into how hits are made
By Lori Durbin
I loved Hit Makers -- the book is packed with fascinating stories and great takes on why things become popular. The insights into the importance of distribution are often overlooked and particularly applicable to the making of any pop culture success.
