A fun and enlightening introdution to computational logic.

The Little Prover is a great introduction to computation logic. I really enjoy it because of its format, its pacing, and its ability to explain core concepts in mathematics and computer programming.

I like The Little Prover's question-and-answer format. It encourages me to write and understand proofs for myself, because the format explains the steps when I get stuck, and it helps me understand the significance of the steps when I succeed.

The Little Prover was very well paced. More complicated proofs are introduced at a rate that keeps them challenging and interesting but never impossible.

The way The Little Prover covers computational logic means I am able to relate it to my A-Level standard knowledge of proof in mathematics (A-Levels are the English equivalent of American high school). The book doesn't just show you how to use a computer program to do certain things, but relates what you're doing to concepts like inductive proof and recursion.

The format of The Little Prover is very similar to the other books in the Little series such as The Little Schemer. I highly recommend those too. The Little Prover also contains many ideas found in How to Design Programs (HtDP). For example the programs in The Little Prover clearly all use design recipes from HtDP and concepts such as natural recursion are mentioned in both HtDP and The Little Prover.

The Little Prover was published just a few months ago and when I learned it's getting published I pre-ordered a bunch of copies not just for myself but for all my friends. I was that excited!

The Little Prover teaches the readers how to determine facts about recursive functions using induction. The book starts with programming concepts such as recursive functions and lists, and leads the reader along the shortest path to inductive proofs. It assumes knowledge of neither logic nor mathematics beyond arithmetic. Just like all other books in the series, it's written as a dialog between the authors and you in a super fun style with a lot of jokes and insider references. This book will make you think from page one and it will stretch your mind quite a bit.

You'll learn about axioms, theorems, what it means for something to be true in computing, conjectures, claims, counterexamples, total functions, partial functions, conjunctions, induction, natural recursion, and more.

Michael Mott, who ably demonstrates that the pits and crevasses hidden deep below the surface of planet Earth might just hold the answer to many of these puzzles. In this informative and entertaining work, Michael Mott, whom I have had the pleasure of both knowing and collaborating with for many years, presents a beguiling and seductive range of anecdotes, accounts and traditions culled from the folktales and traditions of various countries and uses these to present persuasive evidence to support his hypothesis. When one thinks about it, it is perhaps the subterranean regions of the earth that are the only logical place these beings might actually inhabit, for almost all encounters with these entities feature their sudden disappearance into a cave or crevasses or even the ground itself. Interesting read

On the physical book : this is the 2nd, expanded version of the original book (MINUS the not-so apt David Ickes intro that IMHO clashed with the content), of better quality overall, with better paper and formating.
My only complaint would be that the final color inserts are not printed that finely, which is a shame, but overall, I feel there's a real improvement. Nice addition of some rare material (made available in a later related book) from Richard Shaver, too.

As for the content : well, I'm not a very savvy reviewer, but this proved to be a great take on the hollow earth/inner world(s), well-sourced, from fiction, non-fiction, and various ancient mythologies & folklores (a running trend, which I'd venture likely inspired the late Mc Tonnies' 'Crypto-terrestrials' idea), with an interesting tie-in to Biblical eschatology.
I've read and heard various people 'into' the paranormal, including a couple from an Evangelical perspective!, praise that book as the best synthesis on the topic, and... I believe they were right.
It's basically looking at the subject using different fields of human traditions, from pulps and Lovecraft to the Bible and greek mythology, and trying to piece a larger view from those tidbits.

It's accessible to the layman, clearly written, it neither dumbs the subject down nor makes it some kind of arcane knowledge, and is 'factual', with no straight agenda pushed down the reader's throat along the "grand theory" developed - though the author clearly doesn't hide where he stands, beliefs-wise (in the expanded sections I believe, written post-9/11, where there is some open pugnacity).

All in all... Good, solid book.

I have had lifelong interest in the world that is normally hidden from sight, a world of myth, mystery and magick that has been around for millennia, but still eludes us. I have always wondered why and in this fascinating book Mike Mott sets out some extremely plausible answers. According to the well researchd conclusions in this book, that hidden world and the creatures that reside there have always been much closer that might at first appear. They are not in some far away universe light years distant from us, but rather, they are right here, right now and literally underfoot.

Mike Mott presents striking evidence to support his hypothesis that the demons, djinn and monsters of yore may still be among us. From the earliest times they have become programmed into our race memory and still occasionally and inadvertently reveal themselves to us as they emerge from their undergound sanctuaries for their own unknown purposes. This book is a valuable addition to the library of anyone who is interested in the myths, legends and lore that have grown up around humanity and I can thoroughly recommend it.

For centuries, writers have given us fantastic stories of hidden worlds and lost civilizations found deep under the surface of the Earth. The narratives of past cultures are filled with stories of wild beasts, and strange beings living in the underworld. Even in the bible we find mention of people and creatures living under the Earth. Are all these stories simply someone's vivid imagination? Or maybe there is some truth to them?

About the Author

Michelle Collay is a professor in the Department of Educational Leadership at California State University—East Bay, located in Hayward, California. best book on the topic

I am currently writing a dissertation on teacher leadership and I have read extensively "trade" books on the topic. This is by far the best. It is well-balanced and accessible without being patronizing and relies on real scholarship, not just speculation. This is an empowering book for any educator especially in today's policy climate where teachers are often considered the enemy.

The chapter contents elicit deep discussion and the inquiry activities at the end of the chapters are stimulating and do not require the book study facilitator to plan additional discussion activities- everything is there for a great book study.
