Best book I've read on abusive, controlling men.

I've been out of a psychologically abusive relationship with a narcissist for just over a year and have read literally dozens of books describing how to come to grips and recover from the damage of abuse, but this is by far the most complete description of the behavior I experienced. Bottom line (and this is life changing): He is 100% responsible for his behavior and I am 100% responsible for my behavior. His anger and blaming and excuses all stem from his feeling entitled to control my life, my sexuality, my career goals, my self esteem. His contempt for women is the problem, and all my attempts to compromise and give more only enforced his delusion. No other book made it so clear. I'm far better off--and so are my kids--living a life free of abuse.

This Book Will Haunt You. Please Please Read It.

This is a book about abusive relationships. You will notice that `abuse' is nowhere in the title. I suspect this is because everyone has their own definition of what constitutes abuse, and it almost never covers what they themselves are doing - or being subjected to - are seeing and are concerned about. So, with a title like "angry and controlling men," they are more likely to pick up the book, thinking, "Hey, this might apply to the confusing situation I am facing."

Can a man abuse a woman without physically harming her? Yes. He can scream at her. He can throw things around the house. He can vandalize her property. He can routinely blame her for everything that goes wrong in his life, or he can constantly critique her and tear her down, or he can call her names that when I tried to put them in this review, got it banned from Amazon.

This does not mean that just any unpleasant behavior earns the title abuse. Bancroft uses the word "abuse," but he does not use it irresponsibly. For example, he says that if someone is angry all the time, "I would not like it," but it is not necessarily abuse.
Abuse is not a binary kind of behavior that is only invoked when the fists fly, but a deeply ingrained, unrepentant attitude of ownership, entitlement, contempt and resentment that a man displays, not toward most people in his life, but toward "his" woman (including past women). Does it always escalate into physical abuse? Not always. It can still be extremely destructive, even if it never does.

Does this sound hard to read? It is. Despite being written in a very readable style, this book is in some ways torture to read. The only thing worse would be to live it. I recommend that everyone who can stand to, should read this book, because it clears up so much of the confusion that prevails in abusive situations ... confusion in the mind of the victims, the observers, and even (especially?) the professionals.

Even if you only read the first three or four chapters, you will be far ahead. The very first chapter, titled "The Mystery," begins with the confusion felt by victims (who might not see themselves as victims) and their friends, as they try to understand the situation and the abuser. "He says I'm too sensitive. Maybe I am." "Have I changed or has he changed?" "Why does he DO that?"

This confusion is created by the abuser himself, in his highly successful attempts to justify himself to himself, to his victim, and to the people around him. Bancroft did not did start out with this assumption, by the way, but came to it after years of working with abusers in mandatory counseling groups. When he started out, he believed what the abusers told him about how their behavior was caused by their wives' failings, their traumatic childhoods, their unemployment, or the hurts done them by past girlfriends; that they didn't know what they were doing; that they "lost control." Only after several years did the author start to cotton on to the lies.

Also confusing is the fact that many abusers can actually be kind (yes, kind) in between abusive incidents.

Add to this the fact that the victim may indeed have some mental problems of her own (alcoholism, depression, etc.), either predating the abuse or brought on by it. If she has lived with abuse long enough, she may be barely functional. The abuser, meanwhile, is functional in his life at large (except when it comes to treating his wife well), and appears to be a sane, trustworthy person. To top it all off, he has told her many times that his behavior is her fault. (In fact, he may accuse her of abusing him ... referring to her attempts to defend herself.)

Small wonder, then, that the abused woman, her friends, and society at large cannot figure out what her problem is. If they start from the assumption that the abuser is a decent guy who means well, they will never figure out the situation. There are decent guys who mean well. This book is not about them.

This book is admirably free of psychobabble. For example, in one chapter Bancroft examines in some detail a frustrating conversation between a whiny, controlling man and his wife, which ends with him insisting on walking home in the cold, even though she would be willing to drive him. The author then analyzes why the man chose to walk home and resent it. Of course, his main motive is to maintain the role of victim, to keep himself in the right and his wife in the wrong, so that he can tell himself (and tell everyone else later) how she "left him" to walk home in the cold. Bancroft then adds, "Also, deep down inside [the man] there is a human being who knows that what he is doing is wrong."

In another place, he says, "Most people, when you confront them about something they are doing wrong, get defensive and deny it at first. But later, when they have had some time to cool down, they will come back and admit you were right. Abusers do not do this. They use the passage of time to find additional arguments about why they are right."

One last note. There is a fascinating, counterintuitive warning (late in the book), that women in abusive situations should not seek couples' counseling. "Couples' counseling is designed for problems that are mutual." Abuse is not mutual. It is unilateral. It is not the result of a communication problem. Furthermore, couples' counseling can be dangerous (!) for the wife. The reassuring presence of the counselor might get the wife to open up and say things to, or about, her husband that she would never otherwise dream of uttering. Then, when they get home (or even, in one chilling case, in the car on the way home), she can face violent retaliation.

This book will haunt you, but definitely read it. It might help you someday to help someone else, even if it is only by being the only person who believes her.

Confusing behavior makes a lot more sense now

This was a really painful book for me to read and this is going to be a really painful review to write.

I once had an employer who fit the emotionally abusive criteria in this book. When he first hired me, he treated me very well. He praised my abilities often. He gave me credit for increased business. He sent me to training and paid for it. He gave me the second best office in the building after his. I thought I had the best boss ever – so much better than all the ones I’d had before. I worked really hard for this boss, and it was my pleasure. It’s nice to have my hard work acknowledged and appreciated!

After a few very happy years, I started noticing that he seemed to be undermining my projects and encouraging other employees to keep information from me that would help me do my job. It didn’t seem to matter if clients were being harmed in the process. No boss would do that, would he? I was just being paranoid, wasn’t I? He started discouraging me from learning new things. He started telling me I didn’t have the ability to learn what I wanted to learn. Then one day he insulted me in front of other employees, then tried to talk me into quitting. When I wouldn’t agree to quit without finding a new job first, he fired me. Then he asked if we could still be friends!

This behavior was unlike any I’d ever experienced before, and I found it baffling. I didn’t enjoy the process, but I got over it pretty quickly because I found a better paying job with an even better boss within 18 hours. I’d noticed this boss lying to other people in the past – I just need to be more skeptical about people who lie, right? If I ever meet someone like this again I’ll be able to recognize it, won’t I?

During the summer before last, I started dating a guy. I was really impressed by how he treated me. He opened doors for me. He made baked goods for me. He showed me lots of affection. He seemed interested in what I said and when I did nice things for him he expressed appreciation. It was wonderful to finally be in a relationship where I was treated well – so much better than all the others. I met his friends and family. Nobody warned me to watch out. For months he talked often of our future life together. We discussed where we’d like to have a wedding, what kind of reception, where we’d live, whether to get a trailer so we could haul two kayaks. I’d never caught him in a lie about his background or work or anything like that. I’d never seen him lie to anyone else – I thought he was an honest guy. When he said he loved me I believed him.

For several months he had also been suggesting there might be something wrong with me, like ADD. I thought he was trying to help me. Several times he expressed doubt about my ability to manage money even though I have no debt and he has quite a bit. He seemed less interested in my activities and interests but he still feigned enough to satisfy me. One night this past summer he talked about where to go on a honeymoon and the very next day, he told me he’d been thinking about breaking up with me for months. Why? Because he was angry that I had a garden and rented an art studio, plus I didn’t make enough money to suit him. He tried to talk me into breaking up with him but when I wouldn’t he did it a few days later. He said he still wanted to be friends later!

Well, here I was taken in by the same kind of emotionally abusive person again, going through the exact same stages again, only this time it was much more hurtful because I had really loved him and was changing my plans for my life to include him in it. I thought I was safe with him but he wanted to hurt me for having interests and accomplishments. What is wrong with me that I am vulnerable to this kind of abuse? How can I avoid getting sucked in again?

I read this book hoping to get answers, and I learned a lot. There are certain subtle warning signs that I will pay more attention to next time, although I’m not sure how early one can detect abuse if the person is really good at hiding it. My ex-boyfriend is a very good actor and he had apparently read up on what signs to try to hide – he seemed to cover his tracks ahead of time on so many of the characteristics I should have been looking for. According to the author they do try to hide these things until they are sure you really love them and won’t let go so easily. There are guidelines to tell whether an abuser is a good candidate for change and how to tell if they are changing. I realize I’m lucky I got dumped because the vast majority do not change. Some of them dump you as a punishment for not agreeing with them on everything. How do you know if you’ve been abused? This book will help you figure that out. Lying to someone for months is abuse, for example. There are chapters in the book that address when the relationship goes further than ours did – what to do when you’re financially dependent, if there are kids, if you fear it’s not safe to get out, if it escalates to physical violence. It was helpful to read about some of the things I’ve been spared. My emotionally abusive boss had been taken into custody for physically assaulting his wife, I found out later from public records, so the pattern described in the book sure does fit. It’s reassuring to read that my abusers wanted me to think there is something wrong with me so I’d be easier to control but they may have attacked me precisely because there is a lot RIGHT with me and it feeds their ego to hurt me because I am so accomplished. Their incomprehensible behavior now makes sense – making you feel great in the beginning is a tactic called “Love Bombing”. Trying to confuse you or make you doubt yourself is called “Gaslighting”. This book was hard for me to read and digest, but there are things in here that everyone needs to know. I felt better just reading the reviews so I knew this would be a good book for me to read. Abuse isn’t just a problem that makes women suffer – my male co-worker was a victim of a brutal crime last week. What is the difference between violent crime and abuse? Both involve someone thinking that they are entitled to cause others’ suffering to meet their own selfish needs. Read this to arm yourself against abuse.

Detail and Scale is back and better than ever!

Detail and Scale is back and high-tech as well. Those of us who've been modeling for a few years (decades) will have one or more of these essential titles in our libraries to help understand the differences between aircraft variants of a given subject and how to make our own models more accurate. The problem with the 'analog' references were many: the author invariably left tons of material out of the book due to limitations of page count; great reference photos were mere postage stamps in final copy; and, once a title was released, it was finished.

Here is the first title in this new electronic series, the F3H Demon. The title is published in iBook (iPad/iPhone) and Kindle formats using the latest in ebook authoring tools. What does that mean to you?

In this title, the author starts off with the history of radar and its employment with night fighters and interceptors from World War II into the 1950s. This is an essential strand of history as the F3H Demon was developed as one of the first radar-equipped fighters that could employ the first radar-guided missile - the Sparrow. Given the success of the Sparrow (eventually) and radar, the Demon's story should be rather uneventful, but such was not the case.

Coverage of the subject starts with the F3H-1N - while the aircraft and avionics were promising, the Westinghouse J40 engine was very unreliable leading to all F3H-1s to be grounded wherever in the world they were and never to be flown again. The Navy recognized the potential of the Demon and the story gets more interesting as a replacement engine is sought, so for all of you who wondered why the Demon didn't receive the J57 like most other aircraft of the day, the author provides some interesting insight.

Because this title is in electronic form, you receive all of that good information that might have been lost in hardcopy format. This title is 297 pages with over 340 photos and over 50 illustrations. Coverage includes:

With all of the great information packed into this new interactive title, you're still able to purchase this at a very low price!

F2H Demon in Detail & Scale

I gave this book five stars because it continues the tradition of the Detail & Scale series print books for giving modelers and aviation fans the information they're looking for regarding specific aircraft. Specifically, for modelers, as the title indicates, "detail" - close-up photos of almost every area is shown in clear photos, with drawings and text explaining differences between variants, cockpits, external stores carried, etc. A nice historical section is also included with narratives by former pilots of what the Demon was like to fly.
With the changeover to the digital format, much more info and photos could be included. With an Ipad or Kindle Reader, it is portable and can be used on the workbench with normal care. Apps are available so it can be downloaded to your PC, as well.
Recommended to modelers and others with an interest in the U.S. Navy's F3H Demon series of carrier-based fighters of the 1950 -60 era.

Excellent reference

As a long time fan of the Detail and Scale series, I was delighted to see not only its return, but in digital format. This allows much more extensive coverage than the printed versions, though for a modeler that does present some challenges. It's no longer possible to keep the book open to a specific page for reference while building a model. However, with the digital version, desired pages can be printed and used in this manner.

The format is clear, with excellent historical summaries and superb photos. There are further releases planned, and anyone who is either interested in building a model of these subjects, or is just interested in the plane itself, should be very pleased with these books.

Brilliant

Whatay brilliant comedic feast. If you are in consulting world, even better as you will fall off laughing at the tragic reality of the book. It's satire and comedy lie in the reality of it and the ridiculous nature of our corporate world and its denizens!

Would have been better if there was more context

I am usually generous when I evaluate humour books as I think its hard to write comedy. This book is mostly slapstick humour which is not my top choice but I still appreciate. Overall the book is an easy read. The second half is better than the first half as it is a little repetitive at the beginning - the author was probably trying to provide a full characterization of the protagonist. The main downside of the book is it assumes the reader is familiar with the Indian business school environment and the Consulting industry. While I am a little familiar with both, there were a times when I didn't understand the context. I still enjoyed the book, but would be cautious if I had to recommend to those who are not familiar with the above.

I also think it is a little over priced for this genre. Considering buying the second in the series.

Very good read.

I got this at Bangalore airport as I was about to take a long flight. I wanted something light. This was a very good read recommended by the bookstore employee, he said take this you will not regret it, what a true statement. Some parts of the book, I just had to stop and laugh hysterically, much to the amusement of fellow passengers. I have never read any other book which made me laugh so much. I was surprised to see an okay review.... well, you will get it if you have done engineering from India. About the abrupt ending comment, it is a good fun read. Who needs proper ending. Best 5 bucks I spent. Good job Sidin! You made my journey enjoyable. I have brought the sequel for my next long flight.

They could have done a better job.........

I love the late, great Jim Aparo. If not for Neal Adams, his interpretation would have been represented as the Batman of the Bronze Age. I like this collected volume and would recommend it to any Batman fan, but I wish they could have done a better job in some areas. I have two minor gripes and one major one.

First, the minor ones: This was a straight, no-frills reprint of the Brave and the Bold run and "feels" like a quick cash-in on Batman's current popularity by DC. Being a straight reprint of only the BB run is not necessarily bad, it's just that the title of the book was not very clear about this. I was looking forward to some of the stories from his run in Detective Comics as well. Obviously, they are saving this for Vol 2 if this book is successful.

On that note, since this was a straight reprint, it would have been nice to have seen all the covers for these books whether they were drawn by Aparo or not. As it stands, some chapters have covers reprinted and some don't. I understand having covers drawn by Neal Adams or Nick Cardy may have taken a little bit of the spotlight from Aparo's work, but it would have been nice to have them included in some way for completeness, even if it's just a small section in the back.

Second, and by far, the biggest issue I have with this book is that there is no foreword or write-up of any kind. This is one of things I look forward to when I buy these collected editions. I think Aparo deserved a little more respect than that. Someone over at DC should have step up to the plate to write a few words about what made the run significant and/or Aparo's contributions to the evolution of the Batman character. Moreover, with exception of a short paragraph on the inside back of the dust cover, there is absolutely no credit or mention of Bob Haney anywhere. Love or hate this run of the BB, he was as much credit to it as Jim Aparo.

When I started reading comics as a kid in the early 1970s, I was mostly all about Marvel, and the handful of DCs that I picked up felt pretty exotic to me, an unknown quantity compared to the complete runs I began building up of Marvel mags. Among the DCs I read at the time, the Batman team-ups in "Brave And The Bold" (reprinted here) were some of the most alluring. There was a sophistication to Jim Aparo's artwork that stood in contrast to many artists of the era, a Madison Avenue/magazine ad sleekness shared by Gray Morrow and a few others that hinted at a "high art" possibility for the comicbook medium.

Looking back at these stories through the lens of nostalgia (and finding good stuff to share with my kid) I gotta say, these Brave And The Bold issues (#98-122) are better than most of the stuff I was reading back then, and they hold up really well. This was indisputably one of the best eras for Batman, when DC moved to reintroduce a more serious feel to the character after decades of kid-friendly, humor-oriented goofiness in the sci-fi '50s and tv-show '60s. Bob Haney and Jim Aparo's Batman was more of a procedural-cop detective in a gritty urban environs, but with a hip '70s edge. Some of the hippie-era slang seems out of character coming from Batman and Commissioner Gordon, but it's in keeping with the socially-conscious storylines, full of peace signs, sideburns, bell-bottom pants and protest signs. Admittedly, many of the minor characters are ridiculous stereotypes -- hot-tempered "Latins", volatile teen protestors, etc. -- but the politics of the time were also theatrical and self-stereotyping, so the reflections that kids saw in comics weren't that far off the mark. Indeed, Haney's stories tackled some issues that had surprising heft, such as the "Aquarians" story which focussed on how urban renewal impacted old neighborhoods -- a more mundane and in many ways more meaningful topic than the kids-doing-drugs stories that made big waves at the time.

In short, this is an excellent collection that not only brings back the feel of the early '70s, but is solid superhero stuff as well - great artwork matched to scripts that had high aspirations. The print quality and glossy, bright reproductions are very high-quality; this is a beautifully produced book, generously packed with nearly 500 pages of some of the best artwork of the era. The few flaws of the project are primarily editorial: because this was billed as a Jim Aparo retrospective, there are reproductions of some, but not all, the original comicbook covers (only the ones that Aparo did the art for) and it would have been less disorienting to see all the covers, regardless of the illustrators, as is done in most of DC's high-end archive books. Indeed, although Aparo is rightly celebrated here, I think it would have made much more sense to include this in the DC Archives series, which already has one volume of Brave And The Bold team-ups on the market. Also, the lack of an introductory essay sells Aparo short, but it's certainly not a deal breaker. Overall, there's no reason not to run out and pick this book up as quickly as possible. Almost perfect -- and maybe the Best Aparo Collection Ever

First, it should be noted that having Jim Aparo's "Brave & Bold" artwork collected, in color, for the first (LONG overdue!) time is reason enough for a five star review. That said, despite the egregious errors in layout by DC Comics, this is still a five star rave BECAUSE OF THE OUTSTANDING QUALITY OF JIM APARO'S ARTWORK, especially during the early to mid-seventies, which is when the "Brave & Bold" issues collected herein were published (it's a shame that whomever DC hired to put it all together didn't made the missteps mentioned below). Jim Aparo's intial run on "The Brave & the Bold" took place during the height of his artistic powers. Unfortunately, when the guy who did the layout for this collection dropped the ball for issues 112-117 (which were published as big, thick, extra-packed comic issues, featuring a brand new story and then B&B reprints). DC and their graphics coordinator chose to display the covers of these issues at the same size as the original comics. And the covers for these issues featured Jim Aparo's original artwork, plus bits of artwork from the reprints, so the original artwork was shrunk down and sectioned off. Seeing the covers reprinted is a terrific thing if you don't own the comics, because you'll be seeing Aparo's covers for the first time. But an absolutely dumb idea if one is putting together a book to celebrate the genius of Aparo: DC should have ENLARGED the covers, focusing specifically on the section that contains Aparo's artwork, especially since these issues were produced during the height of his artistic ability.

Aparo REALLY got good around issue 104 or 105; and he became great by issue 111, the one with the famous Batman/Joker cover that Amazon has displayed. That artistic ability remained strong right up until around issue number 147 or 148 of B&B -- after that, too many projects resulted in artwork that was rushed in quality and the layout of Aparo's design for each page -- when he was at the top of his game, few comic artists could come up with spectacular splash pages or layouts in the manner of Aparo).

And when it comes to issues 112 through 117 -- some of the finest covers Aparo every cobbled up -- DC SHOULD have enlarged the Aparo art section of those six covers, reprinting the entire cover on a separate page (or reprint all six covers in smaller versions on one or two pages). To see what I'm griping about, go look up these issues -- there's a DC database that has the covers on display, along with a synopsis of the stories in each one. You can check out each cover by changing the number, from 112 all the way to 117.

They also should have produced, even in a smaller version, as mentioned above, the covers for issues in which Aparo did all of the interior artwork, but someone else did the cover, like issue 110 (featuring a team-up with "Wildcat"), so that it isn't confusing to the casual reader when two issues (sans covers) are presented back to back, as they are in this first volume of Aparo artwork devoted to "Batman"-oriented comics. And several pages in the beginning -- one in-between a couple of issues -- are wasted with a bad attempt at an "artsy" layout (one page is completely black, except for part of a piece of Aparo artwork peeking through at the top of the page!). What a waste of valuable space!

ON THE PLUS SIDE, there's the Aparo artwork: in COLOR! To borrow from another comic book creator, excelsior!

This volume stops with issue #122 (the Batman & "Swamp Thing" team-up). There are plenty more great "Brave & Bold" comics featuring Aparo, artwork, including a few issues here and there near the end of the run, including 178, with "The Creeper" -- a costar that often brought out the best in Aparo (heck, just for good old-fashioned strangeness, and because vampires are popular, DC should make sure to include issu 195, with "I Vampire" as a costar). The second volume alone could include issues between 123 and 144 or 146 which include Aparo's artwork (he missed a couple of issues), and DC could still do one more focusing solely on the "B&B" title. So let's hope that DC does at least two more volumes featuring Aparo's "Brave and Bold" artwork (correcting bad design and layout decisions) and BEFORE they move onto his equally stellar work on Detective comics (oft-times, jus the COVERS for that title were spectactular). In fact, Aparo did a cover for one of those giant Batman specials DC used to publish back in the '70s that is nothing short of spectuacular (it features Batman on a rooftop, surrounded by "spotlight" pictures of the joker, catwoman, etc.) -- I have a copy -- here's hoping they use that in one of the Aparo volumes.

And one hopes that DC might even spare a few pages for some words about Aparo and his artwork by one of his fellow artists (absolutely nothing was included this time out).

Finally, DC picked two fantastic covers for the dustjacket of this first volume of Batman-related, Jim Aparo artwork: for the front, they used issue 107 (Batman and Wonder Woman); for the back, they used what I consider to be the BEST "B&B" cover Aparo ever did, for issue 119 (Batman & Manbat). It's a knockout, and if they couldn't use it as the cover, glad they used it on the back, blowing it up even larger than the original comic.

In any case, that the brilliant artwork of Jim Aparo has FINALLY been collected by DC Comics is cause for celebration. Anyone wanting a collection of one the finest comic book artists to put pencil and pen to paper need only buy a copy of this book. I can't find anything to grumble about when it comes to Aparo's artwork during this period of time. He was -- to use the cliche -- at the top of his game (great layouts, great artwork, and he's obviously enjoying himself -- there are even a few "easter eggs to be found, such as Peter Falk, as Columbo, showing up in one panel of an issue). Legends of the Dark Knight: Jim Aparo, Volume One, may turn out to be the ultimate collection of Aparo's artwork.

DC was never ruled by such queens before Ms. Wayne

Being born in DC and raised in MD reading this book was beyond a treat. I knew the streets by name as they were mentioned in the book and I was able to visualize the very scene being read. Miss Wayne and The Queens of DC is not be underestimated.

While this book appears to be solely about the flamboyant, loving, witty, snappy and compassionate drag queen all "Black & Ugly" fans have come to love it was SO much deeper than that.
It takes you into the worlds of many homosexual men who live "the life daily" it so much deeper than designer bags, beat faces, stuffed bras and padded panties. This is about who these people are and just that, that they are indeed PEOPLE. They have feelings, lives, families and just like everyone else they endure pain, heartbreak, betrayal and secrets. With every page there is a twist and turn beyond the readers expectations.
Along with Miss Wayne fan favorites are revisited in roles of: Parade, Jay, Daffany and Officer D. Hurts. There are even a few scenes where the often hated yet loved Skyy is mentioned through form of flashbacks. These very flashbacks take you deeper into the life and past of Wayne you see the very experiences in life that shaped and molded him into the fabulous queen he is today. You learn why he is so compassionate yet so cutting when need be.

While reading this book respect for the gay and transgendered community multiplied I was taken into their world given a glimpse of what life is like for those so different from us yet so similar. I gave this book 5 stars because it was more than a fictionalized depiction of a gay mans life. It was about mans life PLAIN and SIMPLE. While he is gay and dresses as a woman he is still a man and still HUMAN above all else. It appears often in today's society we look at men and women of a different lifestyle and we form this misguided and misunderstood opinions of them. Granted this is a fiction novel I am well aware of that but I read T. Styles blog and it was mentioned she consulted men of this lifestyle for research for this book. That research is so evident especially in the Metropolitan area. I give much love and respect to the author that is killing the urban literature scene right now. T. Styles. She has written another realistic urban tale that so many people can relate to: Straight, gay, lesbian, transgendered, bi-sexual, CONFUSED whatever you may be, unless you are just closed minded and overly critical (in which case you clearly should not have picked up a book with a drag queen on the cover) this book has something for everyone and is enjoyable for any lifestyle you are living if you are a lover of urban fiction.

Kudos to T. Style on a job AMAZINGLY done.

OMG!! I LOVE MS. WAYNE, SHE IS FAB!

First off I have waited for this book for a long time and I was sooo happy when I finally got it. Miss Wayne from Black and Ugly As Ever is back and he is fierce. Not only did T. Styles dive into Ms. Wayne's life, but she let us know what was up with Parade and Daffany! I LOVED it! From front to back this book was like that. T. Styles gotta do Ms Wayne & the Queens of LA, I need MORE!! EXCELLENT!

amazing read

I could not put the book down, I am amazed at Rachelle's strength and wisdom. I am a 62 years old woman with children and grandchildren, and yet I could learn a few things from this young girl about being positive and knowing what is really important in life. Rachelle understands what true love is, she lives it, and so deservedly she is so loved by her husband, in spite of the tremendous hurdles. I recommend the book to anybody who takes life for granted or thinks his life is not good enough..

I didn't want to put this book down. There were times when I cried, times when I laughed, but most of all there were times when I was amazed by Rachelle's strength, her loyalty, and her understanding of the importance of friendship and love! I can't wait to see her interviews and to hear "the rest of the story".

Compelling and educational

I enjoy reading Rachelle's blogs and other posts on social media, so I've been anxiously anticipating this book. I'm also a wheelchair user, and although my situation is very different from hers (I'm a para rather than quad, from birth rather than injury), it's amazing how many of us wheeled people do share a lot of the same thoughts, experiences, and frustrations. I appreciate that Rachelle is using her experience to educate others, and thank her on behalf of those of us who may not have a backstory that is as compelling and book-worthy as hers but still face some of the same things.

Aside from the obvious lesson about living life to the fullest, I hope that after reading this book people will also begin to reevaluate any negative assumptions and behaviors they may have towards people who are physically different. I loved her thoughts about those common cliches that we all hear over and over (& never want to hear again), and I actually may have yelled an "Amen!" when she explained why "handicap" is one of those words that needs to find itself out of 21st century vocabulary. Fortunately, we live in a very different time where some challenges are being alleviated with advances in medicine, technology, and laws that make things more accessible and available to us. But as Rachelle's story shows, the greatest barriers are often attitudes, and those are quite stubborn; continued education is our greatest defense when it comes to that problem. For example, as someone not married yet, it was shocking for me to read about how many people think (and are bold enough to actually TELL them) that it's surprising that her husband stayed with her after the accident. Misconceptions about relationships and intimacy run rampant, so I'm grateful Rachelle is setting the record straight on that issue especially.

I think the only thing I wasn't crazy about in the book was that it seemed to be a bit repetitive in some places. I felt like I was reading some of the same things about her friend's journey and the progression of their friendship after the accident in a few different places throughout the book. Obviously it's a very important aspect of this book and her story; I guess I just wanted to know more about other things, too. But that's what future books are for,right? I'd love to read another book from Rachelle, especially as she and her husband experience parenthood (hopefully!) in the very near future.
