Life after Death according to the Orthodox Tradition presents the teachings from Orthodox Church tradition. Some divergences between eastern and western traditions have existed since the fifth century, but have been considerably accentuated since the twelfth century, when the West, to borrow an expression from the historian Jacques Le Goff, 'invented Purgatory.' The Latin tradition is, however, in its roots, in perfect agreement with the eastern tradition. Also, although in our references we give the greatest space to the Greek Fathers, we will surely cite convergent or complementary teachings and testimonies of the Latin Fathers and hagiographers of antiquity. We hope in this way to make better known to Orthodox the teachings of their own often scattered about and poorly known tradition, and also to acquaint Catholic or Protestant readers with teachings unknown to them or which long ago ceased being within the compass of their faith, but which nevertheless belong to the rich patrimony of an ancient Christian tradition which, in its origins, is or should be common to all.

A comprehensive look at Orthodox Tradition on life after death

Life is full of uncertainty. And yet in all this uncertainty, there is one thing that does remain certain - that the grave swallows up all. What lies beyond however, has always been an enigma for mankind. The Orthodox Patristic Tradition has a very clear teaching on life after death, and how we ought to order our lives so as to prepare for eternity.
God created man for life, not for death and in light of this fact, the book opens with a discussion on the nature of death, beginning with an explanation of the causes of death (i.e. sin). Though death has come into the world through sin, man has the opportunity to redeem himself through Christ, whilst working out his salvation in obedience to the Lord's commandments.
As Christ Himself says "How I find you is how I will judge you." It is on this basis that the Fathers of the Church emphasise the need to cleanse the heart of all passions. It is the burden of these passions that weigh upon a sinful person when they are about to leave the body - all resulting from a failure to repent. That is why the Church prays for a good end to our lives and a good answer before the Judgement seat of Christ.
The author discusses the separation of soul from body, where it meets its Guardian Angel as well as the demons (this is known as the Particular Judgement and portrayed by the Church Fathers in the imagery of the Toll Houses). The demons are the `harsh accusers' who try to hold the soul back, searching out as it were their `goods' i.e. the sins that a person committed at their instigation, and for which the person did not repent. As the Church Fathers say, this is a revelation of the true inclination of the heart to either good or evil.
The Particular Judgement determines a person's state until the Final (Universal) Judgement - there are only two states - paradise or hades as evidenced by the Lord's parable on the rich man and Lazarus. In light of this, the author compares and contrasts Church Tradition with the bizarre Latin invention of purgatory - the Latins believe that if a man dies with some pardonable sins, then God gains some form of `divine satisfaction' by sending the soul to the `third place' (i.e. purgatory) where the soul will burn in fire to cleanse it. This fallacy is completely rejected by the Church, and St. Mark of Ephesus' three memoranda to the Latins at the Council of Florence are presented, which expounds why the Church rejects such dishonest beliefs.
The book details how death does not break off relations between the departed and those still on earth. This is again evidenced by Christ in the parable of the rich man and Lazarus - `Father Abraham, send Lazarus to my brothers to warn them that they may not come to this place of torment'. In other words, the rich man knew the state of his brothers and still cared for them, though he was as it were 'dead'. From this we can deduce that it is necessary to care for the departed as you would for those still in the body - through prayer, and particularly commemoration of the departed at Holy Communion and through almsgiving in the name of the departed. This is said to be very beneficial to the soul, and God accepts this gift as though it were made by the deceased person themself.
In the final part of the book, the Universal Judgement and the nature of heaven and hell following the general resurrection of all is discussed in light of Church Tradition.
Simply put, this book is excellent and essential for all those seeking to understand the Church's Tradition on the nature of death, and what lies beyond so as to set their lives aright while there is still light. The author's style of writing and tone are extremely clear and succinct, and the book itself is extremely well presented. It is obvious that the author has gone to painstaking lengths (the bibliography is around 30 pages!) to ensure that the Church's teachings are readily available for all - a real labour of love if you will. Highly recommended.

The Synthesis of Orthodox faith and piety with rigorous scholarship

At the behest of a friend I purchased this volume on the afterlife, owning many others in English already: The Soul After Death by Fr. Seraphim (Rose), How Our Departed Ones Live by Monk Mitrophan, Eternal Mysteries Beyond the Grave by Fr. Michael Pomazansky, to name most of them. What I found unique to this book is that Dr. Larchet unites everything into a cohesive whole. He doesn't simply give important texts-- some of which may not have been available to Anglophone readers before-- but additionally he interprets them within the broader patristic Tradition, and summarizes the profound truths of the judgment of man, the necessity of repentance and Orthodox faith in Jesus Christ, the power of God's grace and the grace He has bestowed to the Church to even rescue souls from Hades. Few footnoted academic treatises are so moving as this one.
Despite being a scholarly patristic work by a real Orthodox believer, some readers may be disappointed. There is nothing "original" here: one simply finds the harmony of the patristic teaching down through all ages. I was pleased to see that this renowned scholar uses and vindicates Fr. Seraphim (Rose) of Platina, as the mainstream Orthodox figure and teacher that he really is. This will come as a shock to many Americans who have met too many people who perhaps, in the words of Fr. George Metallinos' wonderful introduction to the Exomologetarion. A Manual of Confession of St. Nikodemos, "move on the fringes of the Church's life and experience."

This book is a necessity if one desires to know the Orthodox view of the afterlife. Larchet explores the origin of death, dying, the Particular Judgment, the intermediate state and the Last Judgment. The author utilizes Eastern and Western Fathers of the Church as his sources. Very well sourced, footnoted and thorough. A must have.
