Julia Lerman is the leading independent authority on the Entity Framework and has been using and teaching the technology since its inception in 2006. She is well known in the .NET community as a Microsoft MVP, ASPInsider, and INETA Speaker. Quick and easy read, full of education

While I had heard of Julie Lerman and her book Programming Entity Framework, after the release of code first I was on the fence on just how much I would get out of the existing book. With the release of Programming Entity Framework: Code First I knew I'd learn something, so I picked up an electronic copy (PDF) and started digging in.

First, I should mention that I initially started working with Entity Framework via existing databases. I tried the pre-4 version, but ultimately tried to stay away until EF4 was released. I liked the Visual Studio interface to work with a database via EF, and created one site, still in production, that uses it, but I like being closer to the metal.

With the release of EF Code First I started digging in immediately, using it to create functionality on one site already in production, and most recently started working on another site, for eventual release into production. However, on this latter site I was working with more advanced models and kept running into weird EF issues.

After a few chapters in Programming Entity Framework: Code First I had determined what my issue was, and how to fix it, which alone is worth the price. In addition, while I understood data annotations, I now have a pretty firm grasp on what I can do via the Fluent API, and how I can better control what EF does when it creates the database to store my model.

The size of the book may initially throw you off, but I honestly believe that this book contains as much material as a book almost twice the size. In addition, while I came into the book having already worked with Entity Framework, and code first, I believe this book can easily be picked up by someone new to both technologies. Also, while the 'first' book is referred to within this book, having read it is not necessary.

Julia Lerman will be releasing another book, Programming Entity Framework: DbContext, and I will honestly be picking that book up as well. At this point, however, I'm still on the fence on whether I'll be picking up the 'primary' book, Programming Entity Framework, but I'm sure at some point I will, as I believe it will still be beneficial.

This book will definitely have select chapters read again, and will serve as a good reference, so I give this book 5 of 5 stars.

Excellent tutorial/reference on modern EF development using Code First

I was initially quite skeptical about the content quality of this book, due to poor experience with programming EF 2ed;
However, this one is surprisingly well organized & well written, with extremely lucid explannations of key concepts using good examples. Well done!

5 star read - but no index
By Matt Caton
Just a quick note to point out this book has no index. It is however comparatively short and very well structured and hence its within reason to read it end-to-end. Until you have made it to the end however, the lack of an index makes it hard to just get on and code.
5 Stars none-the-less - its by Julia Lerman so would expect no less.

Simple but Thorough - A Great Introduction

I purchased this book a year or two ago and have come back to it many times as a reference. This is a visually-based book, which uses many illustrations to explain the functioning of the internet to the reader. Yes, there are a lot of areas where it glosses over things and it is very repetitive, but there are many parts where the large, clearly illustrated examples are without question the best explanation of some very complex systems. The book does spend a lot of time on simpler, less awe-inspiring technology like email and explaining how HTML works, but this is well balanced out by the visually-based explanations of how routers and other more dynamic aspects of the internet work together.
The book also clearly spells out the differences between various access systems (DSL vs. Cable modems, vs. dial-in modems, vs. Satellite access) and also spends enough time outlining wireless internet access and other systems to allow the reader to see how the same 'system' used for the internet applies to these newer, more cutting edge applications. I think the book does a great job of showing and explaining all of the complexities behind the internet, without bogging the reader down with too much jargon and detail.

Not technical, but clear and concise.
Every edition has seen some refinement, and older editions actually age fairly well.

For deeper comprehension, muddle through some RFCs.
For more concise visuals, try visibone.
For everything else, look no further.

Random collection of information

You'd think that a book with this title would give a methodical approach to business planning, budgeting and the technicalities of growing. However, it's mostly just a random assortment of information that the author has tacked together. No section is really long enough to give more than the most cursory glance at important topics needed in starting any business, particularly a low margin commodity one. Note that the first review was added by the author himself.

I'll provide an example since the author is so adamantly defending (See comments) an expensive book that is printed on newsprint with bad editing and a lack of focus:

"The Telephone - An Important Tool

A wholesaler's primary sales tool is usually the telephone. An 800 number will increase out-of-state business and is suggested. [...] When selling, use a casual language that sounds the same way you talk. Though not always grammatically correct, this will make prospects feel that you are sincere and spontaneous. For instance, "How ya doin'?" instead of the more formal "How are you?", can sound more genuine."

The author then goes on for another poorly written page and a half about telephone sales. Really? Should you sound spontaneous or professional? Regardless of the importance of telephone sales, the book is just painful to read. As you can see, this may be the only book of it's kind, but Eliot Coleman's books and Richard Wiswalls "The Organic Farmer's Business Handbook are cheaper and far better. As well, there are many handbooks on specific methods that you can select based on how comfortable you are with the technical jargon. For Hydroponics, Resh's "Hydroponic Food Production" is still the one go-to book.

Full of usfull money making info

I must say that I have a long history in the commercial greenhouse landscape and irrigation industries. I picked up this book several years ago for the first time while visiting the home of a freind that is already in the greenhouse business. I am certainly going to purchase the 2010 edition as I was so impressed by the first. For starters the author gives instructions that come as close to "pleasing everyone" as one could possibly get. He gives instructions on building a greenhouse that even a non-carpenter could follow with no problem even though a well seasoned carpenter may find corner cutting techniques or may be able to add/change the design given their unique talent none is needed. As for the Horticultural advice it too is right on target. I was the most impressed by the way the author really stood by his word with the tittle of the book i.e. "succesfull greenhouse BUSINESS " , what I mean is toward the end of this book he has compiled a most valuble list of customers and info on how to get your foot in the door with them and it WORKS !! This book takes away the barriers that we all have. I have a lot of carpentry and horicultural experience, but I have always wondered about how well I could move what I grew once I grew it. I found that The truth is it was even easier to sell than to grow and that has always been the fun part for me as I love to work in the greenhouse and outdoors. The author gives great advice on how to start making money in the first few weeks that you get going and then gives you some great advice on what to grow and why. The section on saling to buyers is most correct, have been a buyer for A&P grocery stores I know a slick professional salesperson will say anything to get a sale and to sounld like a true entrepreneur is more believable. Like the old saying goes "Build it and they will come", as long as you have this little gem under your arm you should do well! by the way the freind I spoke of is doing over $700,000.00 a year with his 14 greenhouses. He started with this little book and a dream ! I found no errors in the whole book and wonder about the intensions of the negitive review was, yes a couple of pictures are dotted from the printer, so what!

Great Book on Greenhouse Start up information.

I found this book at the University of Calif. in Davis and was highly recommended by them. But it wasn't till I saw their review in [a] magazine that I bought it. My greenhouse business took a complete turn around. My profits went up last year by 5oo%. There are hundreds of money making ideas. The best and cheapest ways to do just about everything. I like the way it tells you every thing you need to know to get a buyer to buy them and I could not believe it till I tried it. The author covers so many ways to promote including the internet, making videos, and how to grow what is needed. The chapters on building a greenhouse showed me the difference between steel and wood, and gothic and hoop. When you need a cooling system and when you can just use curtains to let cross ventilation in. The greenhouse that the author designed is the newest one I have built. The directory in the back has pages of buyers and the best supply companies all over the USA is worth more than the book price. Being a true enviormentalist I was delighted when I found that all use of poisons have been omitted and only natural ways of insect distruction are given. Since a clean greenhouse has very little insect problems I have found that he is right, poisons not needed! Even some real good ideas concerning what to grow first to make some fast money are included. If you are considering going into a business requiring a greenhouse...READ THIS BOOK FIRST. There is just SO much valuable info here. Well worth the price if your not lazy!

I received a copy of this book directly from the author/publisher in exchange for an honest review.

This was an amazingly fun, light-hearted read filled with snarky imaginary friends, a pirate princess, lost treasure, and loads of sexual tension. When I picked up Desert Sheikh vs American Princess, I wasn’t sure what I was getting into. I expected your usual formulaic girl meets foreign prince sort of story that has been done a thousand times, and in some ways, that’s what it was--and that’s fine. I like formulaic romance. It’s cosy and familiar, and when all you want is to sit down and read a book that’s going to make you feel good, it’s a great way to fill that need.—but that isn’t all that this story was. There was humor, sexual tension, romance, friendship, and daring escapades.

The characters were fantastic—I loved each and every one of them, especially Bonnie Read, the 11-year-old imaginary friend of the lead character. It was fun to get to see Noelle’s inner child reach out and try her hardest to remind her of who she was (and also get her into a ton of trouble). The sheikh held dominance without being domineering, and though a little slow to warm up, was an all around great guy, and the perfect male lead for Noelle. Noelle herself was equal parts Bonnie—adventurous and rebellious—and her father’s daughter… clever and business savvy. I loved all of them, even the minor characters, and those that were meant to be enemies.

The writing was fluid, clean, and easy to read with the exception of a few minor typos I found here and there, but nothing too jarring as to distract from the story overall. The narrative was fast paced and gripped my attention, and before I knew it, the book was over in a matter of a few hours.

I have to say, overall, I loved the book, and I didn’t expect to. I thought it was going to be yet another formulaic read—nothing special. Instead, I found a hilariously funny read filled with steamy sex, endearing characters, and a fun pirate adventure waiting for me. I couldn’t be more pleased. If you’re looking for a fun, fast-paced romance I would highly recommend that you pick this book up and give it a try.

Teresa Morgan – Jewels of the Desert Series - #2; Desert Sheikh vs. American Princess

Sheikh Walid al Kalam is a strong closed off leader and he will not open up to no one. His father taught him to focus on his job and nothing else, even though his father was not an honest or honorable man Walid was just the opposite. Now Walid is the leader and he owes his country and their people but now he has a problem, Walid gave Noelle Oldrich hotel magnate father, Winston Oldrich, $50M to build a high end hotel in Askar to bring in more tourism. Noelle’s father did not build the hotel and isn’t giving back the money. Walid decided to kidnap Noelle until her father pays. Otherwise he will not have the money for the next payment on the pipeline being built.

During the weeks of Noelle’s sequester, in a beautiful palace with servants at her disposable, her only goal is to escape and get back to America. She knows that her father isn’t going to pay the ransom so she had to get out of there. Noelle is not a passive person and becomes very disruptive destroying Walid’s peace and focus on the pipeline. Noelle is told a story about the legendary a jewel, the Palm of Askar. Noelle believes that she and her child hood pirate princess will help her find the “X”. Together Noelle and the pirate princess, in her head, believe they can find the jewel and gain her freedom.

Walid and Noelle are drawn to each other like magnets, but both know that it would not lead to anything long-term. What happens if Noelle finds the jewel, what happens if she doesn’t? Find out!!

What didn’t work?
• The entire imaginary pirate princess theme and dialog. It became very annoying to me after 2 paragraphs of dialog. It would have been better (at least for me) that Noelle had a back ground in puzzles, maps, finding things, something other than dialogs of pirate speak.

• In chapter 1, the book states that is was Walid’s father who gave Winston Oldrich the $50M, but later the references is Walid gave it to him. If Walids father left the country in dept and Walid is trying to fix this problem, why does the book change to Walid giving the money for the luxury hotel?

DESERT SHEIKH VS. AMERICAN PRINCESS
This is a YA romance, although it may have some explicit sex that a younger teenager might not be ready for. Walid, the Sheikh of three small Arab countries, is in financial difficulty. His father had been a spendthrift, leaving Walid in a financial bind. This was increased because of a loan to an American for $50,000 to build a hotel, which was not built nor was the loan repaid. Attempting to put some pressure on this man, Walid kidnapped his daughter, Noelle, feeling this would guarantee payment of the loan. Noelle had free run of Walid’s royal abode, but there was always someone watching her. Noelle knew that her father would never pay the loan back as he never was interested in the welfare of his daughter. Noelle had a wild streak in her, and she would try anything, even if it might be a little dangerous. As the days passed, romance blossomed between Walid and Noelle, and they grew to adore each other. However, Walid still has to find the funds for his country, and he is considering marrying an Arab girl whose dowry will more than cover his financial problem. Noelle is very much against this and continually nags Walid about this, even though she understands why he is doing this.
This a light read, with a little romance, sex, escapades, and humor. It also had Noelle being mentally guided by an imaginary eleven old child, which added nothing to the story, and it is puzzling why the author felt this was needed. This is a fast and enjoyable read and might be a little immature for older romance readers.

For those who love to read something that is filled with suspense, though we already, sadly, know the outcome.

This book is one of great depth; it not only approaches the disaster of Kursk from a fictional stand point, but also attempts to capture the atmosphere of Russia – something that is prodigiously hard to do in western literature.

The plot develops well, providing a lot of background to the disaster that most people will be unaware of and presenting it in an enjoyable fashion. To say this book is easy to read is not an eloquent enough description of the prose, there is an intelligence that is displayed in the writing style of Clinchandhill that is often missing from modern novels, and was truly refreshing to read.

The characters in this book provide a relatable platform for the story of the tragedy of Kursk to be told without imposing judgement on the facts of what occurred. The opening is particularly engaging as the atmosphere for the majority of the rest of the book is quickly well established and, at least from my point of view, the speech of the characters clearly denoted the accents that each character had.

It’s much easier to visualise and understand not only Kursk but the mentality of those that were involved and affected by the disaster having read this book. Though I do remember it happening, there were lots of details that this book brings to light that I was unaware of.

There are a lot of missing punctuation points and times when the wrong punctuation is used – something that will infuriate grammar Nazis when they are reading, which will distract and detract from the overall quality of the writing. This is a shame as there is so much about this book that is good.

On the whole this is a thoroughly enjoyable book, not only for those who are interested in the Kursk disaster, for those who love to read something that is filled with suspense, though we already, sadly, know the outcome.

The Story Of Kursk Tugs At Your Heart

Kursk is the true account of a Russian military mission gone horribly wrong. The book chronicles the efforts by the military to run simulation tests on their submarines.

The tragic story of the sinking of the Kursk unfolds throughout the book. Both Russian and American officials play an important part in the story; as do innocent military men and their loved ones.

Once a reader has begun the story putting the book down is next to impossible. Though it is a little slow to get started the book captures the desperation of both the crew aboard the Kursk and those tasked with rescuing them. In addition to being a factual recount it is also an emotionally driven story that sucks in any reader with a heart and a soul. The difficulty in making it through the book lies in the fact that the reader is rooting for those in danger to be rescued as hard as their loved ones were rooting for it.

This recount of a tragic incident that affected hundreds of lives is a powerful piece of writing.

This book is totally incredible. Totally in love with it. Keeping history alive is no easy task. One way to try and do this, it by writing a book that reconstructs the actual events of history. In his book ‘Kursk’, Burt takes you on a journey back to a tragic occurrence that claimed and affected hundreds of people. Burt recounts the event so well such that after reading this book, it feels like you are reliving that experience.
So the story goes that; a submarine carrying a torpedo meant for testing got into an accidental collision with boats sent to spy on the testing of the torpedo. This tragic collision opens the door to a series of terrifying experiences. The collision leads to an explosion taking things to a whole different and dangerous level. Alone in the Barents Sea without the government’s or international help, the Kursk’s men have to do all that it takes to survive. This means battling with fire, despair and rising waters, if they even have a chance to make it to land.
The characters are perfectly developed and they make the story incredible. A combination of politics, drama, tension and adventure as captured in the book will keep you captivated and hooked from cover to cover. Every word, every chapter of the book is exactly where it needs to be. It is a must read for all political drama lovers and all those who cannot have enough of history.

printing issues, great content

This is a good book for the topic. Newman has a tendency to get a bit too detailed in places for fundamentals and talks ahead of himself in some chapters (although with processes as interconnected as ecotoxicology it would be hard not too. But it presents the major ideas of ecotoxicology in decent detail and decent length; any other ecotoxicology book out there is 5x thicker. It is a manageable read and explains the major toxins well for people not majoring in chemistry or physiology, and illustrates ideas with case studies and vignettes that are very interesting. The way the book is printed is a bit odd, it is on the lower quality paper produced in textbooks nowdays and the pictures are in grayscale; but the case study boxes are printed in blue, which makes them kind of hard to read. I would rather have grayscale boxes and color photos. The book printers also take the opportunity to use lesser quality paper and printing methods without lowering the price of the book. But the book itself is a good addition to the library of a natural sciences student, and increasingly important with today's use of chemicals we don't really understand. The third edition has several additions and improvements over the second edition.
