ultimate guide

The Definitive Guide - I agree absolutely!!! Useful and practical book - over 400 pages and about 300 bands covered. The essential bands are there due to their talent and influence, and not sales. There are definitions and introductions of genres and sub-genres (from HMR and NWOBHM to goth, power, doom etc) discographies, geography - from UK and Finland to Central America. This book is an honest, knowledgeable and decent job of true professional and real connoisseur. Not only I finally found what I've been looking for (and couldn't find in "Great Metal Discography" - avoid it), I used it as a guide to buy many decent albums, and to read "Nuclear Blast". Few suggestions only - to find some place in the next edition for "Grand Funk", "Blue Cheer" and "Iron Butterfly". As for doom - honestly, "Swans" and - especially - "Laibach" should be there. And a real must is "Mezarkabul" ("Pentagram") from Turkey. But just buy this book, it's a give away price.

The Best "Metal Only" book out there.

I recently bought this book back in August and am stillreading it, its thatgood. First of all, this book only deals with "True Metal" bands only. There are no NuMetal, Grunge, hair,etc.What you get is different genres of Metal. American Thrash, British Thrash, Death, Black, Doom/Gothic, Power, American Heavy Metal, Swedish Heavy Metal, Japanese Metal, NWOBHM, NWOAHM, Brazilian Metal, etc. Band histories and discography are very well done. No longer will you have to buy individual Metal books. Its allhere. In fact, flipping through theAmerican Thrash section, I discovered several Canadian Thrash bands that totally shred. Ended up buying several of their cd's. Garry Sharpe Young has put together the best book on Metal out there for the True Metal fan. If you're a Metal Maniac, buy this now, trust me.

Metal History at it's finest!

I loved the attention to detail involved in this book. All the nitty gritty details about all of the metal bands in a variety of genres. This is a great book for anyone interested in getting a comprehensive guide to many of the founding fathers of various metal styles. After reading through some of the different sections I was inspired to explore some different styles of metal that I had not been too interested in before reading the book. I would highly recommend this book to any metalhead or person interested in knowing more about heavy metal and its different styles.

Thorough and well paced

I am an avid royal reader, and have become jaded by too many royal books that rehash the same old tired tales from one generation to the next. This book announces in the beginning that it is a re-release of one written 30 years before. No problem. It was good then, and it is still good now.
It captures the boy, the man, the father, husband, and King. There were no revelations, just simple history.

If you have read The Kings Speech (NOT the movie screenplay...totally different) this is an excellent read and fills in the history of the life of the man. I highly recommend both this book and the authored version of The Kings Speech for anyone interested in this type of history.

George VI accidentally became the King after his brother abdicated because he wanted to marry a divorced American. I knew very little about George VI except that he is the father of current British monarch Queen Elizabeth and younger brother of famous king who gave up his thrown for love.
Albert, nicknamed Bertie, who became King George VI, had to overcome many obstacles in his life, including speech impediment. Most of his life, he was under the shadow of his more famous and popular brother Edward VIII. Nonetheless, he was a good husband, great father, and did what he was suppose to do diligently.
This book is a good read on his life.

There is something familiar about Nordby's words - not because I have heard them before but because they feel so authentic and honest - it's as if a part of me is being awakened and I feel this is as much my story as it is Jacob's. If you are reading these words, I suspect this book is for you too. Although it may not resonate with everyone if you are or long to pursue a creative, soul-filled and soulful life, this book will touch you in a thousand beautiful and heart opening ways. I can imagine sitting around the campfire listening to Jacob Nordby tell of his journey and our collective journey. This is not a book you'll read once, enjoy and then forget. Rather it will be a book you will want to keep in your briefcase or backpack to read and share. There are laugh out loud moments and other times when you find yourself with watery eyes. Most of all you will deeply feel that you are on the right path, that you belong �and that many of those you'll meet along the way are from your tribe. Now back to the book!

A grand and inspiring call to embrace your unique creative purpose and join the tribe of the Blessed Weird!

Some books show up, just at the time you need them most, and this is such a book.

Blessed Are The Weird begins with a chapter-by-chapter exploration of the meaning behind Jacob Nordby's wildly popular poem from which his book draws its title.

"Blessed are the weird people:
poets, misfits, writers
mystics, painters, troubadours
for they teach us to see the world through different eyes."

He offers an expanded version of the poem called Beatitudes for the Weird, which opens even more windows through which we can catch the grand vision he has for the vital role that 'weird' creatives of all stripes play in nourishing the deep longings of the human heart.

For Nordby, creative 'misfits' play the alchemist's role, offering a transformative vision through which the world can see the magic at work in the seemingly mundane details of life.

"We wait, starving for moments of high magic to inspire us,
but life is a banquet of common enchantment
waiting for our alchemists' eyes to notice."

Weird People venture into unmapped places, beyond the boundaries of what is safe. In so doing, throughout the ages, these brave adventurers have changed the world, each in their own unique way.

Nordby helpfully shares from his own life, how self-discovery, and pushing past discomfort and the fear of uncertainty is vital to taking hold of the kind of life which is fulfilling and in harmony with our inner purpose.

Next, what we truly desire,
Then giving ourselves permission
To go for it with a whole heart."

I hope you can see from the quotes I've shared, that while Blessed Are The Weird is squarely aimed at creative types of all sorts, it is ultimately concerned with the deepest questions of the human heart. As such, it is an inspiring read for even those who don't consider themselves to be creatives.

As a bonus, the book is loaded with life examples, and choice quotes from luminous misfits throughout history who have been courageous enough to rebel against the straightjacket of ordinary existence, in order to live by their own lights.

A thoroughly enjoyable read, Blessed Are The Weird felt fresh and vital throughout, not some stale regurgitation of cobbled-together ideas. There is even a chapter on the connection between sex and creativity! I had my highlighter out frequently, to mark passages which I wanted to revisit in the future.

It's clear that Nordby knows of what he speaks, and that vitality comes through in his writing. Blessed Are the Weird has given me a greater vision and renewed passion for pursuing my creative calling, and for that I am very grateful. I can't recommend this book highly enough!

Why I Wrote This Book
I wrote Healing with the Seven Principles of Mindfulness in order to inspire you to be the boss of your medical treatment and to share with you how and why you should do it.

The Seven Principles of Mindfulness in Healing have been formulated over the past 39 years - ever since Micah had cancer. Up until now, they have been implicit in everything I did for my son and for myself. When I first was diagnosed with muscle invasive bladder cancer in 1997 and then again at the end 2013, I immediately applied these principles and now I am cancer free with all my body parts!

At the beginning of 2012, I began making these principles explicit so that I could share them with you in the form of a book.

Becoming and advocate for your own healthcare is your first stop on your path to well-being. Once you adopt this principle, a daily meditation practice provides you with the foundation to recognize and know what is going on in your body, your feelings, your thoughts and your mind. With just nine minutes a day, you can learn to calm your mind and make appropriate choices for your medical care.

About the Author
Terry Doyle is the Chief Instructor for Faculty Development and Coordinator of the New Faculty Transition Program for the Faculty Center for Teaching & Learning at Ferris State University. He has worked with faculty on 30 campuses across the country on how to develop a learner centered teaching practice and has spoken at over fifty national, international, and regional conferences on topics of teaching and learning over the past eight years. He is a regular featured presenter at Lilly conferences. He is a Professor of Reading and Learning Disabilities at Ferris State where he has taught for the past 30 years.

Todd Zakrajsek is an Associate Professor in the Department of Family Medicine at UNC-Chapel Hill, and Executive Director of the Academy of Educators in the School of Medicine. Prior to his work in the School of Medicine, Dr. Zakrajsek was the Executive Director of the Center for Faculty Excellence at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Before arriving at UNC, Dr. Zakrajsek was the Inaugural Director of the Faculty Center for Innovative Teaching at Central Michigan University and the founding Director of the Center for Teaching and Learning at Southern Oregon University, where he also taught in the psychology department as a tenured associate professor.

Dr. Zakrajsek currently directs three Lilly Conferences on College and University Teaching and Learning and sits on two educationally related boards: ERI for Lenovo Computer and TEI for Microsoft. Dr. Zakrajsek received his Ph.D. in Industrial/Organizational Psychology from Ohio University. He holds positions on editorial boards for several journals and has both published and presented widely on the topic of student learning, including workshops and conference keynote addresses in 42 states and 6 countries. Learning by helping your brain... makes sense

The New Science of Learning: How to Learn in Harmony With Your Brain The New Science of Learning is the right book at the right time. I wish I had this information when I was an undergraduate in the mid-1970's. Terry Doyle and Todd Zakrajsek explain complex brain facts in a simple and easy to understand manner that enable learners to make better choices. Albert Einstein once said, "If you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough." Einstein would love this book.

What can a learner expect from reading this book? One can expect to understand the value of sleep (and naps) for effective learning. One can expect to understand how hydration, exercise, and nutrition play a critical role in memory and learning. One can expect to understand the value of using all of the senses to support the learning process. One can expect to understand how the mindset of a learner can have a powerful impact on academic success.

It is also notable that Doyle and Zakrajsek cite exhaustive amounts of research pertaining to the neuroscience of memory and learning. Overall, The New Science of Learning is a fresh and understandable look how college (and high school) students can utilize strategies based on neuroscience research to meet various academic challenges. Congratulations to Doyle and Zakrajsek for a job well done.

A Good Starter Book - A Prep for the Next Step

A worthwhile book to start with. Eat well, exercise, get enough rest [sleep], a few worthwhile study techniques. A good starter book. Move immediately to "make it stick - The Science of Successful Learning" by Peter C Brown, Henry L Roediger, Mark A McDaniel. A far, far more in depth and impactful book of study techniques that are real world proven to work for every human being.

Neither a difficult nor easy read. Keep a dictionary on hand for those occasional words they forget not all of us are familiar with. You really don't want to misunderstand any of this and have it distort your understanding of the better book above [which you will also need a dictionary for, for the same reason].

Are you a college student or professor? Read this book. Seriously.

I'm an economics professor at a small liberal arts college. I've spent as much time studying the literature on teaching and learning (in hopes of becoming a better teacher and learner) as I have on my discipline.

I purchased this book and devoured it in one sitting. It should be required reading for every college student and every college professor.

**************** For students *****************

You're in college to LEARN, and you're going to be in college for several years. Yet you come to college with little to no knowledge about HOW to learn or HOW to study. And sadly, nobody in college will teach you these essential skills. You'll read your textbook (maybe), take notes in class, review your notes before the test. Maybe this will be sufficient to get a decent grade. But it won't result in much learning. So you'll end up with a piece of paper that says you have an education, but not with much actual education.

And you NEED that education if you want to thrive in this increasingly competitive knowledge-based and information-based economy.

This short book can help you really learn and retain information. The book says it's not hard, you just have to know what to do. I disagree: it's hard to change habits, and the bad news is that you'll need to change some habits if you really want to learn. Habits like time management, to insure you have enough time for sleep, for exercise, and for studying outside of class; this is hard, because it means making tough choices about how you use your time. Another habit that needs to go: "multitasking." Your generation is better than any previous generation at task-switching, which you think of as multitasking. But true learning requires FOCUS. That means shutting out distractions (like the 'ding' your phone makes when people text you). It is hard to put away the phone for a whole hour if you've never done it. But you must, if you really want to learn.

This book explains these points, and many others, in much detail. The book is easy to read, with short chapters (and the book overall is short). Everything in the book is supported by research (with lots of citations).

Think about the incredible investment you're making in college: years of your life that could otherwise be spent in a paid job, not to mention thousands of dollars on tuition and other costs. If you want to get an excellent return on this investment, you really need to learn how to study, and learn how to learn. Sadly, your college will provide you very minimal training in these critical skills. You must pick them up on your own. If you do, YOU'LL BE ABLE TO DO REALLY AMAZING THINGS (the least of which includes earning a high G.P.A.). It's true. Even if you THINK of yourself as a C student, you CAN be an A student. You just need to learn how to learn. (And, importantly, to follow through and implement what you learn.)

You really can do this. Reading this excellent, short, information-packed, affordable book is a great way to start.

Most of us have received excellent training in our respective disciplines, but little to no training in the principles of effective teaching. We don't really know HOW students learn. We assume they learn the way WE learned when we were in college; therefore, we teach the way that, when we were students, worked best for us.

This is a bad assumption. As future college professors, our learning styles as college students were atypical, and teaching to these learning styles will not work for most students.

If we really want to be good teachers, we need to understand how students learn - and not just students that will eventually become professors.

That's where this book can help. Reading it won't take much of your time. It's rich with information that can help us do our jobs more effectively, can help us understand the way students learn so we can better design our classes and assignments for better outcomes. This information is based on research, which the authors document thoroughly.

I can't recommend the book highly enough. Again, every college student and every professor should read it.

Great for Review!

I chose to order this textbook after one of my nursing professors recommended it to me. It is a GREAT resource! I use it when writing my patho papers for clinical and for studying for exams. It gives just the need to knows and no fluff which helps cut down on study time. It helps when making note cards and instead of rereading my actual textbook, I read this to just give me a summary. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to succeed or bring their grades up in any nursing course.

Straight A's books are amazing for nursing. They break down all the long drawn out paragraphs in nursing books and get straight to the point. This is what the disease is, this is what it looks like, and this is what you should do for it. It is a great study guide through out your nursing school years.
